Well the game is tomorrow. I've got mixed emotions about this game. Part of me says the Eagles by at least two TD's. But part of me says the way Hebron throws the football around, it's going to be a long day for the Eagles. One thing is for certain. You don't get to the fourth round by being a bad football team. All the pretenders have been eliminated. You've had to have beaten at least one good team to get here. That is the case with these two teams. Hebron in thriller over DeSoto and Abilene in an opportunistic win over Carroll. Congrats to both teams for making it this far and if your season ends here you've had a good year.
Now on to the game. By everything I've seen this is an even matchup depending on which board you're on you might give Abilene the edge. After tomorrow none if matters anyway. Hebron's QB has thrown for over 3600 yards this season. He has a lot of weapons to throw to and by all accounts distributes the ball fairly evenly. He's been compared to Riley Dodge only not quiet as athletic. That alone should scare you. While they don't run the ball as much as the pass they have a couple of RB's that can keep you honest. On the defensive side the ball, they do tend to give up a lot of yards. Somehow they do seem to get the stop when they need it. That's the mark of good team. They've had problems holding on to the ball but I don't think they had a turnover last week. The biggest problem for this defense is stopping the run. I'll be darn, these guys are starting to sound like Texas Tech. This will be my first live view of this team ever. I've heard a lot about the program and I'm really looking forward to seeing them first hand.
I won't spend much time talking about the Eagles. Everyone knows they have very good balanced attack and can beat you with either the pass or the run. They have sure handed recievers and a very good running back.. I think the Bass kid that spells Flye is a quality back himself. He's more of a physical type of back from what I've seen of him. In the playoffs, I've been impressed at how well the Eagles move the ball. They will need to do this and control the clock to beat Hebron. On defense, it's no secret the Eagle secondary has been suspect, giving up yet another big passing play last week to Carroll. However, the Eagles are very good against the run. So my feeling is that for Hebron to be able to beat Abilene they will have to get that done in the air.
In closing, expect to a lot yards thru the air for Hebron and a lot of yards on the ground for AHS. Both teams need to still keep the other defense honest. If Hebron doesn't run the ball at times, I can see a couple of picks for the AHS defense. Something I don't think people think of when they see AHS' secondary is the fact that those guys are all very athletic and can make plays. Hebron cannot make the mistakes they've made in the past vs AHS or they will lose the game (i.e. don't give them a short field or more opportunity to control that clock). By the same token, if Abilene doesn't take full advantage of every stop they get on defense they could find themselves on the losing end of a very lop sided victory for Hebron.
My prediction:
AHS 35
Hebron 31
I can't help it. I'm a homer.
