I am in London and listened to the radio broadcast of the Westlake game last night. Wow, what a game. They were two totally different teams from the first half to the second half. I was going crazy not being there at the game. There must have been some real “motivation” in the Westlake locker room at half time. They need to get this sorted out and play four solid quarters of Westlake football.

In the broadcast it was mentioned that John Anderson was out for most of the game with a concussion. Also in the post game report they said Max Minor was on the sidelines at the end of the game on crutches. Then I saw in the Statesman where they said Minor had an ankle injury and should return next week. If I was coach Long I would rest him next week, I don’t see they need him to win against Adkins. Breinhan (Jr) and Mansfield (Sr) seemed to pick up the slack after Minor left. I don’t recall hearing about Breinhan before, is he up from the JV? There was no mention of John’s condition. I would appreciate any update on these two individuals and on Jay Austin, he has been out for a few weeks now.

Thanks
Go Chaps!

I was at the game and am a season ticket holder. Unfortunately, I can't update you on John Anderson's situation.

We play Akins next week and Crockett for homecoming before the Hays game at Buda (where they ended our district winning streak two years ago with very poor sportsmanship after the game). I was very impressed with our backup (can you say "third string", but not JV, running backs last night. Travis Breihan is a junior, and I initially thought (a middle-aged moment there--of course the number wasn't right) he was Max from the way he was running.

Jay is reported to have a concussion. Matt Dornak, interestingly, had his cast off last night. When he was injured in the Leander game, they said he MIGHT be able to return during the playoffs. At this point, absent a total disintegration, we should be in as the Division I rep (large schools), because Bowie is 1-3 and extremely unlikely to make the playoffs. It looks now like the third rep will be Bastrop or Austin High--they play next week and that might determine that final spot.

Based on what I saw last night, I can't imagine any reason not to rest Max and Jay for as long as they need to heal for the next two weeks at least. The defense, which couldn't force a punt by Bastrop in the first half came alive in the second. If you listened to it on the internet I know you heard the announcers' comments (which I agree with) that our normally staid crowd came to life at the constant urging of the players and did an aluminum stomp on virtually every offensive Bastrop down in the second half. My daughter, who was a cheerleader there and is now in college, would have been so impressed!

By the way, Foles just continues to improve--he's now thrown over 90 passes without an interception (a merciful relief from the past couple of years); and God bless Staton Jobe's speed (and all his 100 yard dash track championships!). Bastrop was FAST and on more than one play, he was the only one who saved a touchdown.

They're looking good--stay tuned in!

You might have noticed that Georgetown smoked McNeil over the weekend 17-0. Having already played Pflugerville and Leander, that makes them the third playoff representative from disctict 15. It seems to me, that sets the stage for Westlake to face Georgetown in the first round of the Div I playoffs.
It really was the most electric WL crowd in years for the second half against Bastrop friday night. Btw, where can you hear the Westlake games on the net?

or I should say, "in my opinion", it makes them the "likely" third playoff team from district 15. :o

We left with only a few minutes left in the game, and I was pretty disgusted that the radio station that carries the games couldn't even be pulled in from right outside the stadium. I went home and went the Westlake High School Athletics site and clicked an icon there to listen live and pulled in some post game comments. I assume that's how our friend in London found it also.

If you want my random honest opinion, i think Gtown has better athletes than Westlake. Runey Davis will remind alot of you Westlake fans of a poor mans version of Max Minor (as far as his size and speed, the guy is a player). The main reason i dont think his stats are up to par right now is because Gtowns pass 70% of the time offense. When you have a guy like that in your backfield you have to use him more. Also They have a reciever (his name is slipping my mind) that will end up being 1st team all district. Something Rice and he is number 2. I know he is in the top 3 in our district in recieving yards and against us he had 142 yards recieving and a td. Their defense also held us better than any team has all year in my opinion (not taking anything away from the 16-6 score, that yall put up against us but our 28-14 win over gtown is a very misleading score to how the game was actually played). The entire 3rd quarter was the best defensive stand i've seen any team put up on the Lions in the last 4 or 5 years. I'm not saying yall wont win, because i expect yall to, but lets just say do not start trying to ink up a Westlake vs The Woodlands round two before you handle Gtown. They have a solid team if they can stay consistant.

John Anderson has a broken bone in his ear. Rare injury so no one knows when he will return.
Minor has a chance to win the Centex 5A rushing title. It will be hard for him to sit in the Akins and Crockett games. Minor is a competitor, he will do what is best for the team.....which is to play in every game possible! The training staff will not let play unless they feel he is ready. A few years ago, Scott Ballew looked like he had been beaten with a baseball bat after every game. He never missed a game that I know of while at Westlake. That is the kind of back that can take his team to two state championship games!
Bastrop has a good team. Westlake had to play a great second half to beat them. Great football atmosphere, isn't TEXAS high school football great?....even in London!

I haven't seen anyone from Westlake talking about a Woodlands match. We'll be happy to take the playoffs one game at a time.

While it is hard to hold a good man down, Max may only know two speeds, stop and full It may be best for all if he were recouperated to the Max for the Hays and playoff game(s). Speed was a dominate factor in the Leander game but a healthy Max with the 3 other active backs will be tough to stuff a second time. Two weeks of therapy would be great. If John Anderson can play in the playoffs, that would be a big plus. I am note sure what therapy is prescribed for his broken ear, but listening to Austin songwriter/singer Alice Spencer is therapy to my ears!
don't get me going on about Scott Ballew... but my opinion is that Scott was the best back in the school history, bar none and Max and Matt Dornak are up there in the elite club....

John's ear injury is unique. I'm not sure if it happened on the football field or if he was listening to his iPod too loud!!! He is a very good player and also one of the emotional leaders of the team!
