This has been a tough season for the Red Storm. They've been more like the Red Calm, going 5-5 and not just losing but getting smashed by the likes of Mesquite(just lost to Plano in the 2nd round), Plano (advancing to 3rd round), Longview (advancing to 3rd Round), and Skyline (advancing to 3rd round). Their closest lost which is probably their most embarrasing now that the regular season is over is losing to John Tyler in OT, though competitive, finished the season with Carter being their only win!
(Note: Carter lost their QB in this John Tyler game and he didn't play until the week before Skyline game.)
It seems however that getting shut out by district rival, Skyline, caused the storm to start brewing again. It seemed to have awakened something in the players and coaching staff that have caused them to start playing with a true Carter pride that fueled generations of Cowboys in the past.
After the Skyline game, they had one game left against a Sunset team, their JV would probably beat and a game most people thought would be their last win for the 2007 season.
However, Carter, a team that have struggled to defend the pass all season was matched up with a North Mesquite team with two Division. 1 wideout recruits and a signal caller who was more than able to get the ball to them. Naturally, Carter was not favored to win, even with a better record than the Stallions. Carter shocked the metroplex with a 34-24 win.
Next up the Naaman Forest Rangers of Garland, a team who had a good season with decent competition and a stud running back in Jonathon Miller, who was nearing 2000 yds for the season and planning to reach that mark against Carter. Once again Carter beat the odds, holding Miller to less than 50yards and the goal of 2000 plus beating the Rangers 28-20. Many Ranger fans believe, and rightfully so, that things would've been different had the officiating been different towards the end of the game. However, many didn't even believe this would be a close game and that Miller would have surpassed 2000 yards. The verdict: The Red Storm moves in a southward direction to face the Pflugerville Panthers.
The common thought on this game is that Pflugerville is the better team, and they are in a stronger district so they will win. This is true, but the game has to be played on the field. The Cowboys are up for the challenge of being the underdogs again.
Neverthess, even if Carter loses this game, for a 5-5 season team, getting to the 3rd round of the playoffs gives the Carter family the right to say that they are leaving 5A with a bang!!!
Class 4A get ready!!! There's a STORM coming!!!
