Madison 29-Lee 13. Okay, a win is a win. But,….
Jerry’s had the spread on this game at 28 and Massey’s had it at 30. Coming into this game Lee was outscored in district play 127-7.
Game summary from www.mysa.com...
Lee running back Travis Lewis played in his first game this season after recovering from an ankle injury. He rushed for a team-high 81 yards, including 36 on Lee's opening drive.
The nine-play, 61-yard drive took up the first six minutes of the game, but ended on a failed fourth-down conversion. But it proved Lee was a different team with Lewis in the backfield.
Green rushed for 144 yards and two TDs to lead the Mavericks (6-1, 4-0 District 26-5A). He also kicked three field goals, including a 39-yarder as the first half expired.
"We played well in spurts and sputtered in spurts," Madison coach Jim Streety said. "Lee had something to do with that."
Lee (1-6, 0-4) held its own, gaining 277 total yards and stopping Madison with a first-quarter goal-line stand.
The Mavericks opened the scoring with a Green field goal after they failed to punch it when they had first-and-goal at the Lee 1-yard line. The Lee defense stopped the Mavericks for a loss on three straight plays, including two carries by Green.
Leading 3-0 in the second quarter, Madison wide receiver T.J. Terrell caught a 36-yard pass from Chris Caflisch for a TD.
Two minutes later, Green scored his first TD on a 64-yard run down the right sideline.
Green only gained 37 yards until the TD run.
"They stopped us on the run early and had a great defensive scheme," Green said. "But I knew I had it in me and I had to make it all the way."
Green has rushed for 851 yards and 12 TDs this season, and said the Lee defense was as tough as any he's faced this season.
Green added another TD in the third quarter on a 29-yard run.
"We settled down, came back and played how we should play," Green said.
"We played better tonight than any other time in district," Lee coach Jimmy Ramos said. "The kids believe in Travis and he makes all the difference."
Lee scored in the third quarter on a 48-yard pass from Jerome Tiller to Joseph Gonzales. Tiller was under pressure, but scrambled and found Gonzales open in the end zone.
Tiller added a 10-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Listening to the game (via tsrnsports.com) it sounded like Madison's D was lost on Lee's opening drive...clearly this Travis kid made a difference. Lee's MO during district games has been 3 and out. Lee Qb Jerome Tiller had his best passing performance in district play (11-20-1-148) as a result of having Travis on the field. None of this surprises me with a key RB back in the game.
My question relates to the Lee D. They played, well, outstanding (relatively speaking, this is not a Clemens thread :) ). Question: Can one guy make that much difference on BOTH sides of the ball? (I dont mean Travis played O and D, but how much did his presence in the O backfield influence the play of Lee's D). Or is it more likely that they played better because Madison is the team to beat. Thoughts?
