Westfield comes up with a big defensive performance and outlasts Stony Point 33-21. Plano takes care of business and defeat the Skeeters 28-7. I see this as a battle, a very big battle. Offense vs Defense. Cats vs Stangs.
Westfield by 14. Any thoughts?

Don't know much about Westfield. Last meeting was 1993 quarterfinals. Plano won 20-0.

What's Plano's SOS rating this year? Westfield ranked #12 in SOS last year. Plano was at #122. I think Westfield still has a top 20 SOS ranking from 16-5A.
Is Bo Walker not playing?

Nope, he's out with a leg injury. FB Darryl Ford is doing pretty good, he's averaging over 9ypc.

For how long? will he be back? They breed rb's at Westfield so I'm not suprised about Ford stepping right in.

It's day-to-day. He dosen't look 100% when he's on the field so I'm guessing he's done for the remainder of the playoffs. I was at the Stony Point game yesterday and he was on the bench pretty much the whole game.

Of course I take Plano. Their are two huge reasons why.
1st Defense has given up more than 14 points only twice in a game that was to two very high profile passing teams in Allen and Rockwall. They have 2 division 1 QB prospects and was the only teams that gave Plano trouble the whole season. Westfield is not a big spread them 4 wide offense. Plano plays great defense against the run. They shut down Barren Batch (texas tech) of Midland 2 years ago and will limit any power running team.
2nd, Offensively Plano has the most balanced offense it ever has had. They can go 4 wide and spread them. Plano's QB has over 2600 yards passing and is completing 66% of his passes. Or they can go Power I and power sweep with Burkhead who has over 1500 yards and 30 TD's.
3rd. Plano knows how to prepare for playoff games. They have an very experience coaching staff and they will bring a huge fan base to Round Rock unlike Plano East Fans. They will out number Westfield 5-1 in support.
Prediction: Plano 21- West 14

I see WHS moving on. I think they are peaking at the right time. Extremely fast defense and excellent special teams, especially run backs. It is very difficult to stop their o-line and running attack. You look up and the quarter is all but done and you haven't touched the ball.

Westfield runs Power I extremely well. It opens up the play-action, which has made Westfield an even bigger threat this year. No one has stopped their offense. Not bad for a team that's 80% run 20% pass.
Their defense limited Desean Hales and Terrance Robinson to 86yds rushing and no scores. Both of them are Div.1 commits. the run defense has it's ups and downs, but is solid overall. The pass rush is obviously one of the best I've seen. If Plano is gonna pass alot, they'll lose.
Westfield's secondary features two Div.1 prospects in the safety and cb positions. They defend the spread very well, allowing only 136ypg passing against spread-teams this season.
I think it's payback time for Westfield!!!

Heard all that stuff before about d1 prospects and speed and defending this and that.
Plano will come ready to play they will be prepared and they will play hard. As in all playoff games against 2 good teams it comes down to which team limits the their mistakes, turnovers and doesn't give up the big play.
That's how Plano wins games.

Plano will not have a 5 to 1 ratio in fan's at Waco either...and I don't remember the last time a fan got on the field to play in the game anyway! Thank God for Burkhead and the rest that your dumb self will stay in the stands with your stupid neon Plano sign! Not out just not at full strength. He has had a nagging ankle injury......... He is able to play however with Ford running the ball so well, the coaching staff has been able to rest that ankle as much as possible. Bo will be ready Saturday and if he's not then we a few guys more than capable of stepping in and being extremely productive......... Credit that to our offensive line:eek:

Plano has a very solid team, and will go as far as Burkhead can take them.
He is a real thrill to watch. The kid can flat out play! He blocks, runs, catches the ball, and I'm sure whatever else they need him to do. He's not "the team", but is certainly key to their success. It will take a BIG effort for someone to hold him down for four quarters.

Plano should fare well against Westfield as its run oreinted O.
Of course you can't overlook anyone and I assume this will be a very tough battle.
Plano can run but can also pass the ball and the Defense is playing stellar especially on goal line stands had a big one against Rockwall and anohter big one Sat against Mesquite.
Of course Westfield has a good D and if they are able to shut the Plano O down and control the clock then you never know.

Well lets get off to basics.
Plano 3rd largest High School in texas by enrollment. Mascot Wildcat, home stadium Clark!
7 State championships dates and scores below. First to win state in 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A. Currently tied with Celina, Brownwood and Southlake Carol.
Coach Gerald Brence three state rings one as head coach 1994 and two as assistant to Tom Kimbrough. This is Coach Brence's last year as head coach moving on to be AD for Plano ISD.
Latest Playoff run 2005 Regional Finals to Southlake Caroll.
District 9-5A, rivals Plano East, Plano West, Allen, Richardson High, Richardson Berkner, Lake Highlands, Wylie.
Following is somewhat opinion as I am a homer but will try to be as biased as I can.
Offense traditionally run oriented with power sweep and option grind it out run it down your throat style no passing very little. This year more balanced with QB 28 Carson Meager can run shotgun spread and I formation. Not to be a homer but this year the team has proven it can strike quick like SLC, Allen and Plano East, but can also change up the formations for clock control.
Defense known far and wide as "Bend Don't Break Style" traditionally excellent aginst the run as a run oriented team but has improved in recent years to defend against the spread.
This years team are moslty Jr's and most inside thought this team was a year off. Many Freshmen suited up in 2005 and was on the sideline for the last Playoff game Rex Burkhead played in that game. Although mostly Jr's this squad comes from the underclass 9 & 10 city championship teams and is very experienced in starting 3 in 2005 and 14+ in 2006.
Not the biggest on defense but poseeses speed at LB core and DB postions.
Cons can come out flat and as a result have played many big games from behind. Plano does best when it can build a good lead and grind it out. Has been lucky more recently in the 1st round Bi-District game against Rockwall and won the big district game with Plano East on a last minute long pass.
Notable Players
QB Carsen Meager
RB Rex Burkhead #20
WR Chris Lott
WR kenny Watkins #7
WR Nate Christiansen

More Plano History
Football
The 1900 Plano football team was the school's first athletic team.
Plano's girls' basketball team, 1914.A small group of Plano boys formed an unofficial football team in 1898. In 1900, the first official high school team was formed. In 1909, Superintendent C.F. Walker complained to the local paper, "Do you sleep well at night when you know your boy is on the streets kicking a football?" Despite his concerns, by 1914, Plano fielded a football team and a men's and women's basketball team. However, the first World War cancelled all athletics, as there were not enough men to field any teams.[1]
By 1925, athletics programs had been re-established, and a mascot had been chosen, the Wildcat. The 1925 football team completed an undefeated season, and the resulting fervor led to the increased funding of athletics in Plano. The district allocated funds to purchase a cow pasture for the purpose of playing football and other sports. The pasture was renamed Guy M. Rice Field, after the team's first football coach. By 1939, a "modern" stadium had been built at this site. With the construction of Plano High School in 1957, an accompanying stadium was built, and Rice Field was abandoned. In 1977, Plano completed construction on John Clark Field at a cost of $2.75 million ($8.92 million 2005 dollars).[8] Clark Field, with a capacity of 14,224, is the facility used for most varsity football games today. Kimbrough Stadium, a new stadium in 2004, is also occasionally the site for home games.[1][18]
Following the integration of Plano High School with Plano Colored School, the football team made its first run at the Texas state championship in 1965. Most of the town shut down to make the drive to Austin, Texas, and see the Wildcats win their first state championship. After the Wildcats won the championship again in 1967, the team was voted Texas Outstanding Football Team.[1]
The Plano Varsity football team has gone to nine Texas state championships, as detailed below, and won seven. Plano's seven championships tie the school with Brownwood, Celina, and Southlake Carroll for the most in Texas.[19][20] The 1987 Plano football team won the mythical national championship.
Following the creation of Plano West Senior High School in 1999, Plano lost much of its player base to the new school, and the 2003 Plano Varsity football team suffered a winless season for the first time in the history of the school. The tenth graders who were recruited to play at the varsity level during the dismal 2003 season became twelfth graders in the 2005 season. Partly due to this extra experience, the 2005 team completed a perfect 10-0 regular season and went 3-1 in the playoffs, finally being defeated by the eventual state champions, the nationally ranked number one Southlake Carroll Dragons.[21]

He has nothing better to do since Garland is sitting at home at 2-8 and rumors abound of a coaching shake-up.
I am really enjoying ignoring is desparte attempts for attention and trying to get a rise out of Plano Fans. The farther Plano goes in the playoffs the worse he becomes. There was a troll thread on this board about Garland coaching. Thats what he heard.
With a 5 game run in the POs last year, and still having most of the staff from a RECENT championship, playoffs 13 of the last 15 years and I dont know how many PO wins... na, Jeff can stay as long as he will. But it would not surprise me if those parasites are not after a 10-5A coach. It would take a bunch of $$ for any coach to go there.

I'm going with Plano. They play solid football all around and make few mistakes. Westfield can intimidate some opponents but I think Plano's huge fan base will give the players the extra intangibles to be confident and fired up to play.
Plus, you need to beat them for last year's PESH team that should have won state. Good Luck PLANO.

This will be a great game. They usually are in the 3rd round. I think Westfield wins this one. It will be a close game though and Plano will have chances to win the game as well. I just think Westfield is all around very good and will take those chances away from Plano. IMO WHS 28- Plano 21

The game can be heard online at http://k-12.pisd.edu/sports
Pregame will start at 1:30, with a 2:00 kickoff from Round Rock ISD stadium.
Should be a very good game. Westfield is a bit of a one trick pony, but that one trick is really, really good. They can pound the ball like nobody's business. Bo Walker may not be at 100%, but their back-up, Ford went off for 194 yards last week. They're easily three-deep at RB. Once they've established the run, they can suckerpunch you with a good passing game. In one of their earlier games, they had 4 touchdowns through the air, with only one from inside 20 yards. They lull you to sleep with the run; and when your DBs cheat forward, they kill you.
Plano is as balanced as they have ever been. If you haven't seen Plano in a while - and let's face it, if you didn't see the 2005 campaign, you haven't had a reason to see Plano for a while - this is not your father's Plano Wildcat team. Their QB is the first in school history to pass for over 2000 yards. For those who remember the old option attack that Plano used to run, this will be very different. They run a lot of four WR sets this year; and I remember years when they didn't have four WRs on the roster, let alone on the field at one time.
This game will come down to who can make stops. Given that, I like Plano is a very close game. If all goes according to Hoyle, this game should be over by about 4:30. Both teams will try to establish the run and keep the clock moving.

I agree as well; seems like people tend to forget that this is the same Westfield team that was ranked #6 in the state in the preseason poll.
All westfield has heard after their slow start to their tragic and emotional season was.......This is not the same Westfield of the past and so on........That has provided the fuel and determination that has allowed them to refocus and finish the season at such a high level.
I believe that many of the Westfield players truly understand how special life is and how quickly it can be taken from you! Stay focused, play every down as if its your last, and leave everything out there on the field and good things will happen!!!

Allen was #3 and they are playing basketball. Rankings ended after the 10th game. Rankings, stats, SOS, they mean nothing. It's a W or an L. Not trying to be a S.A.

The special teams are good. I think they have something like 4 kickoff returns for TDs - 5 punt returns for TDS and 4 INT returns for TDs
The kicker struggled early, but he has gotten the kinks out now. He's not a long range guy but is good from 35 yds in.

That should fall on the Coaches...Smith should have called TO if he needed to collect his thoughts and made a better decision at the end of the game.
I would have liked to have seen him (Smith) do like Meekins (Westfield) did against Oak and call the whole team together on the sideline and tell them this is what we have worked hard for...etc..etc.
Of course it probaly never should have come to that.

See Westlake folks, this is the Plano "Mystique". Most of what you see from me is response to personal attacts, and arrogance. But yes, there is a longtime dislike for for them. You know I always appreciate the way those folks are so helpful in telling you what's wrong with your team, facilities, coaching, etc...
I can't say that I have been on the bad side of the folks from Godland.
I also can say that the we went toe to toe on here last year with the Westfield fans and it did not get too out of hand.
I just wish I could attend the game!! Have fun folks! :)

Westfield folk, What is the story with Stony Point, Dont know much about them. How did yall beat them? How did they stack up with other teams yall have played? They beat Leander and Pflugerville so must have had something going on.
RRSP had a very good team. My sense was that they were young at skill positions. I would expect them in the playoffs next year, same game. The weather was terrible (41 degrees) and hard rain in Huntsville for all of the first half and most of the third qtr. They ran a spread which WHS seemed to enjoy. Their zone read took too long to work and WHS was able to stop it especially in the second half. I don't think they were use to playing a speed team that hit as hard as WHS but, to their credit, they play very hard as well. In sum, I would say that weather influenced each team's abilities negatively. This Saturday should be very nice and a little warm. Plano looks good on paper and WHS is ready to rock. See ya at the game!!!

Does Westfield like running pro formation lots of power sweeps, pulling lineman or do they run between the tackles? I heard their line averages 300+. Are they big slow types that take up space and put body on body or are they athletic.

Are our linemen athletic? You have NO idea. I'm sure the Plano coaches and players have discovered in their film studies that our line move extremely well and play with superior technique. They are very well coached and as tough as they come.

Their defense is very physical and fast. I mean super-fast. Lots of playmakers on the line and in the backfield. The lines are at 290lbs avg. on offense, 280lbs on defense with the biggest at 320lbs(DT). They hit very hard and they get the job done quickly. Stony Point only had 1 first down the entire 4th Qtr.

Don't go there... so close and yet so far...:(

The O-line is fun to watch if you like the detail of football. They trap, counter, reach and pancake - quickly. The tackles are big and fast; guards not so big but faster. Very well coached and great at making adjustments during the half and half time. What I have seen this year is that as the game progresses they get more and more movement off the line. Gimm at tight end is a beast and no one beats him.
This will be a great game between two great team. :) Look back over the last few months and you see both of these teams mentioned or highlighted in many threads. Injury free is a good way to end the discussion. See you Saturday!!! Go Stangs!!!

See Westlake folks, this is the Plano "Mystique". Most of what you see from me is response to personal attacts, and arrogance. But yes, there is a longtime dislike for for them. Usually just saying Southlake and 0-10, and they shut up. Many people I know in the DFW area envy The honest elite programs in the area and there are some. Whats to envy with Plano*?
Westlake, looking at your record and from what I know about your team, you should take care of business. Lots of folks in the Dfw area are pulling for you.
BTW, the last time the team I follow played them the score was My team 23, them 7.;)
Gray, I stay out of your business with PWF. But that statement is a stretch. I would imagine that most don't care one way or the other outside of the respective cities. But people tend to root for teams in their own area more than not.

From what remember from last year's game (I know - this year, EVERTHING is different) w/ East, Westfield played mostly between the tackles, but would run the corners to keep the defense honest. Keenan spied the running back and was free to roam the field. This was effective in the 1st half. East also got out to a strong offensive start, w/ Rico hitting deep and scrambling effectively. Westfield had some very strong LBs and run several blitz schemes that Rico wormed out of early. The game changed when Rico sustained a hit on a scramble that resulted in his rebreaking his collarbone. Jeff Emens came in and was not as effective eluding the blitze. Ringo adjusted by running Keenan as a TE and assisting w/ blocking and Slater (a Burkhead-like player), who was hurt by an ankle sprain, was also reduced to blitz protection. By the end of the game, Jeff had settled in and had 1 or 2 defensive stops been made, well........
The double duty hurt Keenan in Q4, and Westfield wore down the East defense with their power running game. They could not make the stops when they needed to. East had several 3 and outs deep in their own territory, and it seems to me like the second half was played almost entirely in the East defensive side of the field.
Westfield has about the same size as Rockwall and Allen on the Oline, and I don't think anyone will be more athletic (and aggresive) than Allen, Rockwall and Buckner in high school football, I've seen Northshore, they are very much like Allen, and were better than Westfield in early October.
I'm sure Brence and Ringo have been talking about Westfield's schemes and tendencies, and Holland(?, Planos FB) will be well briefed on blitz coverage and escape routes to keep the pressure off Megers. I hope Brence has Burkhead getting some QB snaps this week. And I hope he works on punt coverage, as Westfield's returns were probably as important as Rico going down in the final outcome of the game. And stay away from the 3 and outs. I think Westfield will have problems w/ Christian and Lott, especially downfield.

Burkhead at QB... you obviously didn't see any games last year, Quarterback is not his position unless its a direct snap from the 5 yard line. He is an outstanding HS running back, and he needs to stay at that position if Plano wants to win.
I see this as being a very run oriented game for Plano, giving Burkhead as many touches as possible, and opening up quick passing strikes from Meger and utilize Lott, Davis and Christian.
Sounds like it will be a VERY good game if both sides bring it all to the field. Wish I could be there, but Finals and term papers are calling my name...hopefully Plano makes it to semis so i can watch the Wildcats when i come home for the break.

My point is exactly what you stated, the direct snap to a very good RB that wants to score a TD everytime he touches the ball will be vital. AND if Megers is forced out, I would prefer to have Burkhead getting a direct snap rather than forcing a little used QB into a very high pressure situation. Westfield will tee off on him, just like they did to Jeff Emens last year. AND Emens is a good passing QB who started 5 or 6 games last year. If I remember right, Allen beat Westfield because Dick put his team on his shoulders and carried them to the final game winning TD late in the game, and won w/ his legs, not his arm. I suspect the same thing could happen this year for Plano, either w/ Megers or Burkhead.

I think stamina is going to determine this outcome. I don't think they can keep up the pace for 4 quarters. Running the ball is not going to fly all game with Plano and bend don't break is going to lull them into mistakes. I see the Westfield D on the field all day and by the late 3rd and 4th they will sucking for air which is when we will break the back.
I think they are also going to have a hard time reading us people are not giving us credit and that's fine but this squad is changing it up, Power I, Shot gun spread, mid lines, TE loads, quick draws the days of One Dimension Wildcat Ball is over.
I predict an exciting game through half but in the third its over.

It seems as though Plano isn't too confident running a single offense, instead multiple formations and stuff like that. Spread, Option, Power I, Westfield has beat them all. Good luck running them all against a championship-caliber defense like Westfield's, you'll need every one of them.:D

It's not that Westfield can't pass....... We just don't have to very much with the running game we have!!!!

No one has. Ever. But the answer is simple. We pass. Just ask the Woodlands. WHS has 4 tailbacks that can and have scored from anywhere. I agree, it is good to have options.
I still think it will be a good game and no amount of cynicism can take the away from the fact that both teams are good and will be playing at their best. WHS players, coaches and fans understand that and welcome the challenge. Our kids will play snap to whistle because that's all they know. We expect Plano will too.

That maby be so. however, in the program from 7th grade on the history of the wildcats and what they have accomplished and what it takes to reach that level of success is in grained with everyone that has gone through the program so by the time they get to the varsity level their is a sense of keeping the program at a high standard and striving to be compared to the great teams in the past.

Being proud of ones history and success over the last 70 years is not thinking our stuff don't stink. Plano had been down for quite a few years until 2005 and Plano fans on here are excited to be in the hunt for the first to 8 title chase and being recongized on a state wide level. So if they get a little over zealous then I think you could understand. Have you seen all the MOJO fans flood this site this year? Same thing.
Trust me at the game the players, coaches and fans exhibit nothing but class. No trash talking no grand standing after a big play. It will be intense.

Thay dont like that kind of question;)
I have been told that I should not post to Plano* threads, but can I post to A Westfield thread? I was looking at yalls website and some pictures, of the Stony Point game. Hot Dang I saw what looked like a tight, straight T formation. Looked like a goal line Offense. When a team lines up like that they are saying "We are about to run right at you and stuff it, well you know"
Try to stop us!!! I love it. The team you are playing have likely not seen anything like that since little Carter kicked thier...ah rear ends in 06. I am starting to like the STANGS more and more.
I just made a quick look at some records, and here is what I came up with
I could be off on some years. Plano* SENIOR Highs PO record, last 10 years;
96...lost in round 1
97...no PO
98...lost in the 3rd round
99...lost in round 1
00...lost in 2nd round
01...lost in 2nd round
02... no PO
03...Lost in round 2
04...NO Po
05... Lost in 4th round (after sqeeking by DeSoto in round 1)
06...No POs
Just for info. What is Westfield record in those years?

I have been told that I should not post to Plano* threads, but can I post to A Westfield thread? I was looking at yalls website and some pictures, of the Stony Point game. Hot Dang I saw what looked like a tight, straight T formation. Looked like a goal line Offense. When a team lines up like that they are saying "We are about to run right at you and stuff it, well you know"
Try to stop us!!! I love it. The team you are playing have likely not seen anything like that since little Carter kicked thier...ah rear ends in 06. I am starting to like the STANGS more and more.
I just made a quick look at some records, and here is what I came up with
I could be off on some years. Plano* SENIOR Highs PO record, last 10 years;
96...lost in round 1
97...no PO
98...lost in the 3rd round
99...lost in round 1
00...lost in 2nd round
01...lost in 2nd round
02... no PO
03...Lost in round 2
04...NO Po
05... Lost in 4th round (after sqeeking by DeSoto in round 1)
06...No POs
Just for info. What is Westfield record in those years?
WF recent playoffs -
04...lost to Tyler Lee in the State Champ Game
05...lost to Judson in the State Semi's
06...lost to Allen in the Regional Champ game
I'll try and dig up the ancient stuff...

In small way it does help the players in the present.
I guess that's why they persevered to the district title last year......oops

Two things:
(1) Sorry, I've lived in the Houston area all my life and that's the first time I've heard it called the Moronicle.
But, at the same time, the Chronicle guys are at least enough of journalists where they didn't say "I don't know much about ______, but.....," which is what the DMN guys said. Check the tape.
The Chronicle guys may be making a "homer" pick, but at least they don't prove themselves to be ignorant.
"It's better to say nothing and be thought an idiot, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
(2) Regarding carrying on a tradition from that 1994 team (let alone back in the 50's and 60's when there were less than half as many schools), if they have players suiting up left over from that team, we need to call the UIL.

As a reminder to anyone who cares, Westfield did manage to beat Plano East last year AND took Allen to OT. So their recent history against District 9-5A teams with great offenses is pretty solid, defensively speaking.
At this point in the playoffs, it starts to be more about which team wants it more. And, I think with all that Westfield faced in the early season, they have a lot more to play for than Plano does. That might backfire on them if they can't keep their emotions in check. However, I'm thinking they're used to these feelings by now, and will not let it get the better of them.
Westfield - 28
Plano - 21

It was some Houston guys on here that introduced me to the term Moronicle. I think we were doing QB stats.

I know it's not much fun for the fans & band, but I think your team should relish bad weather - you're battle tested in it and can approach bad conditions with a "bring it" attitude. I think Westfield's offense & defense is ready made for the nastiest conditions. Not that we (Stony Point) did that bad last week, but Westfield seemed to have that little extra edge in the worst of conditions, and the tight score reflected it in the end.
Good luck, and travel safe. The field at the Palace drains well and won't be much different to play on than Bowers was last week. Is Westfield home side or visitors?

EastSIDE
11-30-2007, 02:02 PM
Gazelle-I would agree with getting Burkhead involved in the QB area some, Plano will only get one chance this year to win state, they might as well pull out all the stops. Plano's current QB has done a quality job getting the ball to the wealth of talent around him, so I don't think you are taking anything away from him by putting Burkhead in some at QB on passing and running plays, it would really mix up a S.W., and allow Plano to get #5 in the game at the slot, plus Burkhead has a cannon and is a very accurate passer, so you would be gaining options with #5 and confusing the defense. Plano is stupid for not running that spread offense last year. Burkhead's running ability would allow him to take off and get big chunks of yardage from the QB position which could mix up S.W. and would definitely put a strain on a big, quick and fast defense.

Maybe Plano will install the Arkansas "Wild Hog" formation, instead of Mcfadden running or thowing you have Burkhead. They had Burkhead in the QB position against Rockwall to get his 5th touchdown down on the goalline. Maybe they'll expand the play options with a possible pass.

Very true, penalties absolutely killed us yesterday!!!! No way you can beat a great team like Plano by committing that many COSTLY penalties....... Turnaround point in that game was us not scoring when we had the ball on the 1 yd. line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Totally took the focus away from those kids.
I don't feel that the refs let this game be decided on the field!!!! They had way too much influence on the outcome of the game and after Plano was up 31-6 then they quit throwing flags on every :Censor: play!
With that said, Plano was the better team yesterday!!! Good luck the rest of the way!

I don't agree with upsetting the apple cart at this point, you would have to have a certain mentality to handle that situation. They should spread Burkhead out in the slot more, especially yesterday when they stacked 9 in the box, with no safeties.
