I was just watching Jeopardy and the final question was, according to the US Census Bureau, at 15.2 % and 10.8 % what two countries provide the two highest number of claims to ancestry in the U.S. (or something like that)? Anyone want to guess .... without Googling of course?

I would think Mexico would be 1. I couldn't tell you the other. I have guesses, but I'm not very confident.

I would have never guessed Brazil... by the way, the answer to the first post is: Germany and Ireland. That answer would not have surprised me 30-50 years ago but I, like KT, would have thought Mexico had to be one of the two given the trends the last 30+ years.

Just about all of Brazil's Japanese population is located in Sao Paulo (largest non-capital city in the southern hemisphere).

Nearly every gringo in the states can trace some part of their roots back to one of those two countries, so it's not too surprising to me at all. Mexico will soon catch up, though.

Some of us can trace back to both. I was going to guess Germany and England. Ireland should've been more obvious than England though.

Lotta Irish came over during the potato famines. They were viewed by the current residents much as Mexicans are viewed today.

Only difference is the Irish immigrated within the law. There are also a lot of Irish cops and FBI agents out there. Not so many Mexicans.

Congratulations. You've won the stupidest post of the day award. You'd be surprised how many Mexican cops there are out there.

But they all secretly smuggle cocaine, so it cancels out.

Very few on our local police force.

Quite a few more on the Dallas police force :D I see some written up in the paper quite a bit like the guy that substituted pool chalk for cocaine. Wonder where the real cocaine went?
