I figured Longview would move up to #2 after their televised game. Now all we need is a poor showing by SLC when they play Denton Ryan to close that gap between #1 and #2!....I just see that happening though.
Its funny. After watching Longview play on TV, I was less impressed than I was just reading about them.

it is nice to see sportswriters, who are only slightly more knowledgeable than the general public, admire your teams feats. on the other hand any team that pays more than fleeting interest in these beauty contests won't be playing when it counts, at least not for long.

You might have been less impressed because of the 2nd half. When Longview scores that many points in the first, we come out and put some 2nd stringers in and play very conservative not to embarrass the other team...

LOL at argyle?? Where is Argyle?? How could you not be impressed with Longview after the 1st half of that game?? They coasted in the 2nd half that is normal. Beating the defending div1 champs 35-7 on their home field is no small feat even if they are down from what they were last year.

Now Lobo i agree they coasted in the 2nd half but 95 percent of the Lobo starters were in up until the 7 or 6 minute mark of the 4th quarter. Either way i was very impressed and i know they could easily win state this year. I do not know what this guy was going by?? Maybe Argyle is a powerhouse that we do not know about?? LOL

i don't even know where that town is but longview not going to get any respect from alot of the other teams around the state because they didn't run up the score. you don't run up the score on a district rival when they are down because one day the shoe will be on the other foot and the will remember that you did that and return the favor

I respect great teams more when they do not run up the score. Outlaw refuses to do it!! Lufkin was up 40-0 at half last week to a very very weak team and if he wanted to he could have beat them 90-0 but he completely called of the dogs and put the 2nd stringers in at the beginning of the 1st half. That is respectful and the right thing to do in my opinion. Some coaches want to get that wooow across the state when they beat somebody 75-3 but Outlaw is never going to do that and it looks like King is similar. It is called respect!!

I noticed that Jerry's power ratings moved Longview down to #2 this week after being #1 all year up to this point. That's more a reflection of SLCs strong play than anything Longview has done.

Without a doubt Outlaw is responsible for the success of the program. He put Lufkin on the map and knows how to run a true program!! Look's like Longview has a very good one also.

LOBO's deserve all the respect they've been getting on this board. Everyone knew after last year that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with. If you doubt that they will suit up and punch it out with any team out there, you are kidding yourself. They are for real, and it will take a GREAT team to beat them. I don't see them shooting themselves in the foot and starting slow and sloppy like they did last year. These kids are focused and ready to get it on.

I've seen Longview in person (last year) and after seeing them against REL (even better than before), I think that they are a top 3 team. Not #1, though (til Carroll is unseated, that seat is theirs).
And I really don't think that HS sportswriters are any more knowledgeable than normal people...the only difference is that they get paid for their knowledge.

I agree...you gotta beat Lufkin..then we'll see....
For those who can't use Mapquest or another internet-based map service, Argyle is located 7 miles south of Denton, 15 minutes north of Southlake, in between the 2 I-35s on FM 407 and Hwy 377. The high school here is 2A, soon to be 3A. The team's not great, but played several rounds in the playoffs last season.
As for my opinion of Longview, their game vs. Tyler Lee wasn't impressive even given the way they dominated the 1st half. Tyler Lee's not real good. And many of your scores (and 3rd down conversions) came as a result of poor defensive play rather than great offensive execution.
The night after Longview's big game, I made the trek to Southlake to watch their game vs. Haltom. They scored even more than Longview, but did it in a much more impressive fashion. The Dragons execute their offensive sets and plays with precision. The WRs run good routes, the QBs throw great passes and the defenses usually can't keep up.
In my opinion, Longview plays sloppy. The team is full of great athletes, but I did not see the kind of team that will challenge for a state title. All this said, the season is still young and the Lobos have time to improve. They'll need to if they plan on beating SLC this year.

lview will need a rabbit's foot to beat lp first. getting that monkey off their back will be quite a feat in and of itself. they are as capable of it as they've ever been with their team this season. for slc's part, we'd just love to be there for the chance to play either in the semi's.

We will need a rabbit's foot? I think your going a little too far. I agree we will need to play a great game, but I assure you we wont need luck. Most of the time, the Longview Lufkin game can go either way. Both teams will be able to compete with each other in the near future. I do agree that in order to gain much more respect, we will need to beat them but saying that we need a rabbit's foot is rediculous.
I'm sorry if you think we play sloppy. Your opinion is quite the contrary to about 95% of the states opinion. Longview didn't play sloppy in the 1st half against Lee. That statement is absurd! Haha, I almost laughed!
Then again, your entitled to your opinion, no matter how foolish it may make you look! ;)

Difference being sportswriters are fairly analytical of the broad-range sport, because it's their job.....fans, or "normal people" have personal biases!
Sportwriters are being paid for more than just their knowledge.....they attend the majority of games, around the entire state. And if they do not attend they have local sources that attend and report back. They breakdown film, time and again. They read into stats, injuries, level of competition, weather factors, historical indicators, prediction outcomes and re-ocurring scenerios.
There is serious background work that goes into analyzing the different teams and their opponents, ultimately leading to ranking.
The differences can be small.....but those small differences can mean so much more.

Yes the same defense that kept that same player out of the endzone enough times to WIN THE GAME!!!! Man get over it already. I still can't believe you brag about all the yardage that Vondrell got against our D. My question is did he get into the endzone when he needed to to help your team win the game? Not no but HELL NO! But my goodness it is the past. If we meet again this year it could be a different story and your team could execute with perfection and come out with a win. Show the run if you like. It was impressive no doubt and if you can find the one that shows him getting into the ENDZONE for the game winning TD I would like to see that one too. Then we can just show you a pic of the scoreboard after the game was over. Is that a deal??? Oh and I do have pics of Lane getting into the endzone. Isn't it funny how your impressive D was able to keep him from gaining a lot of yards but failed to keep him out of the endzone when they needed to. Strange huh. Hey bud you lost we won end of story. Hey, Stang , as a loyal Panther fan I implore you to stay out of this deal between Longview and SLC. I am sick of hearing about the streak and nine wins in a row. You can debate that crap until you are blue in the face, What a team has done in the past, doesn't count for anything this year. Lufkin is 2-0 against Katy and they win State(2003), 0-2 against SLC and they win State (2002 & 2004) and we beat Lee last year(2004) and they win State. You see all that doesn't matter in 2005, because no matter how much we talk, there will be only one team standing from each Division when the smoke clears in December. We should be the team that is frustrated because we have either beaten the future State champion or lost to the eventual State champion each of the last 4 years. As a Lufkin fan I am not talking anymore about our last six years against Longview because although we did win 9 in a row, we hung on by the skin of out teeth to win about 6 of those, how quickly we forget as fans.
Lufkin has bigger fish to fry, we need to make the playoffs first before we start talking about the playoffs. We have five games left starting Wednesday night against Klein and Lufkin needs to take care of business or we may not have much to say about the playoff picture.
We Lufkin fans need to stay out of this deal, we have palyed both of these guys and know want we are dealing with in each of them. On the other hand they have never played and they want a piece of each other. Longview fans really want to take what Southlake has and I don't think SLC is ready to relinquish that just yet. It is a long drive yet, before either will get to the cross road that will put them on that desired collison course. The playoffs are uncertain and you really need to have the breaks go your way for six weeks to reach your goal. Weather conditions, turnovers, team travel, unexpected injuries and mental fatigue all play a big part in the playoffs.
Talk all you want, but in the playoffs you must perform at your top level week in and week out and the team that can do that will win the championship. Six weeks against the best of the best.

It never ends eeeeeever!! Just one point arab since your such a stickler for being correct about the past!! Lufkin is the 5th all time winningest 5a team ever!! How could they have been a doormat forever before Outlaw got here knowing that fact?? Does not hold water?? He definitely put Lufkin on the map and made them a title contender every year and it sure was not like that right before he came you are correct. Yes Lufkin has had their share of bad years but so has Longview and so has most teams. Quit acting like Lufkin was 1-9 every year before Outlaw because you are sorely mistaken. The only team that stopped the Lufkin 88 team was the 88 Dallas Carter team but they stopped everyone. Lufkin also had great teams way back going deep several times and playing in the finals.
I refuse to talk about the streak or the LP vs Longview game last year anymore so no comment there. You lost move on!! Just like Lufkin fans have moved on from the SLC defeat!! Would of could of should of never counts for anything.

Hey PackAttack! If you will look at my first post in this thread you will notice I was merely paying a complement to my friends from SLC and inviting them out for refreshments if there is a rematch this year! Somebody from somewhere felt compelled to take a shot at the Lufkin program. I couldn't let that stand, but since you have appointed yourself the Panther Nation police, do I have permission to post comments to my SLC friends whether a certain town that starts with L is involved or not? Furthermore, the same person that paid you the complement from that town is the one who took the shot. Kind of like a kid poking a stick in a beehive and crying when they get stung!

Longview has a very good team this year and many of their fans want more recongnition for it. This is the same thing that happened back in 2002 when SLC was first started to play 5A football. The Dragon Nation knew we had a good team but people were saying "Yea right, you have to prove yourself to be taken seriously". It was hard for Dragon Fans to not be frustrated about the precived lack of respect. I think now the shoe is on the other foot where SLC has been very good for 3 years now and is fielding the best team they have had yet! When you have been successfull then other teams want to take you down, via playing you or calling you out for "not schduling hard teams". When you are playing well, all teams seem to be "down" when you play them.
When your team is playing well then let the team do the talking. There is no need to downplay other successful teams trying to build your team up. If it is a team of destiny then let the team have it's destiny! No amount of posting is going to make 16-18 year old young men catch passes better, run the ball better or hit harder. Good luck to all the teams who are playing well. I hope to see all of you in the playoffs!

All that matters is that the team stays focused and does not listen to any of this stuff. You think they are not used to being ridiculed? That is old hat. They go thru the season with visors on and are deaf to the outside world. They focus every week and play hard. No amount of talk will change that, so continue, SLC will too.

Is anyone else sick of almost every thread that mentions Longview or Lufkin, turning into some kind of argument between the teams? I will say that Lufkin was never a doormat in the distirict. Yes, they may have had some bad seasons in the past but they were never a doormat. Also, finally a Lufkin fan that realizes the streak DOESN'T MATTER! 'bout time!

Panther Nation Police?????? Well, I have been know for taking control a few times before in my time. I had rather not think about that, but some one had to step in stop the nonsense about the past. The past only has old trophies that gather dust. Today is all that matters. Winning traditions are something to be proud of, but they won't win games for you.

Just saying. VMac didn't even use any moves. He took the toss and ran straight for the endzone. A hole a Mack truck could drive through.
Longview finally moved the ball well vs Lufkin unlike both the games in 03 and most of the games in 02 and we have to hear about it. Egads for VM for having 180 yards or whatever it was so what?? Lufkin has racked up plenty of yards vs Longview in the series lately also. Again, let it go!!

Yes i am beyond sick of it!! I disagree with the streak not counting for anything though?? Anytime you beat a very good program that many times in a row it is significant. I promise you if it was the other way around that we Lufkin fans would hear about it just as bad!! It is something to be proud of as a program. You do not see Lufkin fans talking about a big long streak vs Nac. That is no big deal but beating Longview that many times is in my opiniion. Great accomplishment.

I do not know!! You are correct for the most part but I have seen teams that have that winning mindset and are used to being on a winning program beat teams that are not used to winning but had more talent on several occasions. They lost before they even stepped on the field because they were intimidated and did not expect to win while they other team did expect to win.

I agree with you on that point.

Westlake lost their vote! Darn!
I read all the post. The streak was not brought up by a Lufkin fan but rather a SLC fan. Then Lufkin and Longview start going at it, SLC fades out of the conversation and it becomes Lufkin vs Longview all over again. That seems to become the pattern. I don't post much but I do read a lot of the post. All 3 programs are top notch. Like a lot of poster's have stated, lets just let it all be played out on the field.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS!!!

geezzzzzzzzz---here we go again!! now, it's a Lufkin/Longview thread??? when will it ever end??????????????........Nate----i respect your opinon, brother, but are you comparing SLC running the score up on Haltom to Longview beating Lee??? certainly, you are not going to sit here and compare Haltom to the defending 5A state champs????? no, Lee isn't as strong as alot of people put them up to be this season, but DAMN----Haltom???? hell, our JV could beat those guys 60-0!! give me a break, PLEASE!!!! that's no real accomplishment or anything to be comparing.................

in general, we are getting along famously. i remember much harsher and acrimonious posts(some by and about me) in the recent past. lots of tension as the po match-ups are in flux. this is why we are all so interested and so spirited.
