Nice article in todays Chronicle about Juinor QB Kolby Gray and the Powerful Cy Falls Offense. You have to tip your hat to Cy Falls this year. Any time you lose 95% of your team and reload and have the season like they are, well, WOW! And they are the reigning Division 2 Region III Champs I might add.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/hso/5296240.html
How would a defense stop this high scoring offense? Blitz the linebackers? Blitz corners? Zone D? Pray for monsoon rainfall? Create a Gray or Turner voodoo doll?
Some people say the best way to stop a speedy, high scoring offense is to keep them off the field. Make sure your team, keeps the ball on offense and milks the clock, but also scoring 7, not a Field Goal.
Any thoughts? ..... or just hand Cy Falls the Trophy and head on into Basketball season...

When I first read your post, I thought you were actually being nice about - then I got to the meanness:rolleyes:. Kolby didn't write the article nor did a Cy Falls player/fan/coach/parent post this article. Someone saw a human interest story and wrote it. He is the leading QB in the area so it makes sense...they write articles on LOTS of athletes in this area. Not sure why you are so angry at this article...it isn't meant to intimidate or hurt anyone's feelings - just a piece on a talented athlete. It's shameful that something like this can't be done without all this vitriol.
And, yes, until we are knocked off, we are the reigning Region III, D II champs. And, yes, I do think we have a pretty good offense.....and team.
And one more thing - why is it every team around here can have a great season and it's okay - but it's not okay for Cy Falls - like they are some kind of fluke or something. It's getting old. They aren't a fluke and there is a nice program going on over on Huffmeister.

It's a legitimate question, no meaness at all. Those are some big time stats AND with only 2 interceptions! :notworthy

I didn't read it that way - the sarcasm was fairly dripping off of the part about handing the trophy to Cy Falls and praying for a monsoon rainfall. Maybe I just read it wrong. I am the sarcasm queen though so I know it when I see it:)

I didn't read the post as being mean at all. That statement about bb season is really over used.
How do you stop an offense like Cy Falls:
Definately keep the ball away from their offense. Long drives with scores. No turnovers. Limit the possessions to 4 per half.
On defense the dl must play very disciplined team defense. When spread out the lb's and secondary must aggressively attack the ball and TACKLE. Poor tackling when one on one will give the big yards after the catch. See Katy v Falls in both meetings.
In the running game I would attack Gray on every play. The player responsible for the qb on the speed option needs to RING his bell every chance he gets. Not saying to intentionally hurt anyone but you must attack the Falls qb with malice in your heart. Beat him until he cracks.

I'm quite sure the initial post was a compliment.
Anyway, Cy Falls' offense scores, on average, 22 points per game more than their opponents allow...that is outstanding.
I think the key to Cy Falls' offense is Shane Turner. If you sell out to put pressure on Kolby, before you know it, Turner will be coasting into the endzone. The same goes for Carroll and Tre Newton. Both offenses are as deadly as they are because of their respective running games.

That is why I voted for Shane Turner as 175A MVP or at least MVP for Cy Falls team. You have to always know where Shane is on the football field. Always.

I support all 17-5a teams so it is nothing against Katy. Falls will play whomever is their opponent and I don't care who it is. Again, nothing to do with Katy or KISD - just supporting our district:)
I only diss if dissing is against us. I haven't said anything towards your team in a while that was bad. I did get ANOTHER PM from a supposed Katy fan telling ME off but I guess as long as they do it on PM, I can smile and wave boys!! I have my doubts to the level of his Katyness to begin with...

Are you two ladies done kissing and making up?
I forgot to add to my post that you need to make Cy Falls use the clock themselves. They will inch down the field and eat the clock if you play sound position defense. This plays into the hands of the opponent because it shortens the game to only a handful of possessions.
Make your tackles......#1 thing to do is limit the big yards after the back and or receivers get their hands on the ball.
The whole point of the spread offense is to get the defense into one on one situations with great athletes and let them break tackles.

I read the article this morning. It's really nice to see a good kid get a good write up. A whole lot of people thought Falls would be in a rebuilding year and didn't expect much from the Eagles. I guess the rebuilding got finished earlier than was expected. Kolby is a fine QB. His stats speak for themselves. He isn't a ball hog. If Turner is being stopped, which isn't very often, they turn to the receivers. Shaw, Bolden and Wells can pull the ball in and then tuck it and run. It's a beautiful thing to watch.
Thanks for the kudo's for the team from around the board. CFMom will be fine;)

Ridge was the only team to hang that many on us during the season! And, you are correct, it wasn't all that wet field. Ridge needs to be given credit where credit is due...they just played a great game that night! We still got 35 in there even with the loss against a very good Ridge defense.

I noticed many saying that keeping the ball away from Falls by controlling the clock. That is the conventional wisdom on the subject. However, I don't believe that Falls has won the TOP part of the game in any game this year. In fact, I believe the opposition has had the ball as much as 3 times the minutes as Falls in some of the contests. Just think about it......your team gets to run plays for 3 qtrs, Falls runs their plays for 1 qtr.....but your team still loses by 22! So I am not sold on the TOP argument against this team. I don't think Ridge's game plan was to go out and control the clock. I think they just came out and did what they always do. They have a duo of very quick guys in the backfield, a fair passing game and a solid OL. Their bonus this year which I believe enabled them limit Falls' offensive production (along with the dropped passes) was their across the board quickness and speed in their LB's and DB's. They are just a very, very good team this year. That is all that needs to be said. Sure, my homerism is going to say if most of those dropped passes had been caught, the outcome may have been slightly different. The W-L outcome may not have changed, but the score would have.
Others have mentioned disciplined play by the DL and LB's. For what? Stopping Shane? For one thing, that kid only needs a small crease for a brief moment and he is through it and looking at the secondary. (Side note, the OL has been giving him some BIG holes lately.) But, if the LB's are staying home for Shane, more than likely Kolby is hitting the receivers all night long. You cover them short, they will burn you long. You cover them up long, Kolby will pick you apart underneath and the receivers will then take it along ways.
Drop you LB's into the passing lanes to cover the short stuff, there goes The Missle again.
Some say the key is Shane, some say its Kolby. The key is the TEAM. It takes every one of them to make the others successful. A quick running game (Shane is in the top 5 in the area I think?), a proficient and ADJUSTABLE passing attack (Kolby is #1 in the area, the THREE starting receivers for Falls are in the top 20 in the area), the OL to open the holes for Shane and keep the bogeys off Kolby (very few sacks on Kolby this year, and it rarely ever looks like he is hurried). Add to that a defense, while not stifuling like a Katy, but one that can manage a game well enough to drag out the opponents' scoring oppurtunities. Summation is, this is one heck of a TEAM this year. And they are pissed because they were dissed all off season and the defense has been ridiculed all year.
So how do you stop them? Hell if I know.
Oh, and on the TEAM's behalf (since they don't post) I will say thank you for the kind and respectful remarks on this thread and the ones that are building on the other threads.

Anybody have exact height/weight on the WR for Cy Falls? All i know is they are big, athletic, and run good routes. They do a pretty good job blocking downfield and on the outside as well when they give the ball to Shane. When you have that much talent in the backfield as well as at receiver it is pretty obvious that its going to be tough to stop this team. Their coaches do a good job on offensive play calling as well. My question about turner is, How good is Turner running up the middle and not out in space? Most of his runs that i saw were set up so that when he got the ball he was already in the open field. Also, Falls from what i have seen, isn't usually faced with a goal line situation due to their big play ability, but How good are they on the goal line, and do they still use their spread formation or do they have a goal line formation?

Yay!! Well, if you want to start early, we will be at Los Cucos (the one in town) at probably around 5:00 or so and then over to the stadium. We usually sit around the 50 and halfway up. PM me if you want to meet up - I'll give you my cell # and all! We would be glad to have ya!
Los Cucos is good. How long do yall stay there for dinner???? I will come by and say hello. Just want to put a face with some of these names. I went to the Clements game Saturday night out in Fort Bend. Carr's brother was good and the offense was clean and executed well. That team will be a contender in the future..

Cy Falls might be the best blocking team ive seen all year
Interesting statement and thank you for the TEAM's sake. What is it or where did you see them to make you recognize or say that? Personally, I think the OL has come a VERY long way this season. They were VERY inexperienced at the beginning of the year, but have really developed during the season. This was the aspect of the TEAM I was most concerned with to start the year. It usually takes about 2 years for an OL to develope in HS. They have managed to do a good job in just 1.

I guess the only way to beat falls is score faster than they can!
All it takes is 1 more point than they have.;)

Somebody that has actually seen Clements play. You might be the first person that has said something good about Clements football team. The game was 34-0, at some point during the 3rd qrt. the Coach starting making subs. Austin got 14 points in the 4th. Clements played sloppy. 10 penalties will hurt in playoffs. Thanks for the compliment. :)

Receivers
#84 Darius Bolden 6', 167lbs.
#12 Blake Shaw 6'3", 185lbs.
#21 Denzel Wells 5'10", 165lbs.
All three are in the area's top 20. All effective and utilized equally.
Shane Up The Middle
Up the middle is where he makes alot of his yards. Shane is a FAST runner who goes north and south in a hurry. He is not a large power runner like an Andre Dean from Katy. His tools are speed, fearlessness and field vision. Up the middle, the OL gives him a small crease and he is through it in a heartbeat and "out in space" quickly where his speed and field vision come into play. He will not typically be one to run over people in the interior of the line. However, if you saw the Fair game, he has the potential for that too. I just do not want to see him attempt that very much. I think it would wear on him too much and take away from his attributes.
Goal Line
They pretty much stay in the spread. Run, pass, sneak. Not a problem and do all equally. No tendancies.

Ok, CFmom and CFbooster, i want yal to tell me how to beat Cy Falls. Just curious. How would you beat them?
Well, since there is only one of me and I'm an old fart, I would see if my Aggie ring could get A&M down here. Best idea I can come up with.:D

It is the YEAR OF THE TIGER! Your offense is only one third of the game, you have to play a complete game, and Katy has the COMPLETE GAME!! I don't see Cy Falls getting in the way this year!!

Thanks for the answers. I thought those receivers were bigger than that (except for shaw he seemed about that size) they are all very good though no question.
I should've phrased my question about Shane better. I was more referring to those situations where he would have to run through instead of around people and you answered that for me. He definitely has the tools to be a good back in the spread and he finds holes and space to run in very well. I'm curious to see how he would do in a more pro style offense, or in more of a power running formation.

I'm confused too - it is the Rams for us this week:confused:. Also, we play more than a third of a game - and they play well into the 3rd quarter or even 4th before 2's come in.

The receivers seem larger to me, also. I am just quoting the stats as reported by the Comical which are probably just reiterating what the school puts out. At this point in his career, I would not classify Shane as a "power" runner. That is not what he is about. As he matures and grows over the next few may enable him for that, but for now, I want to see him run fast and go down before contact when there is no other option.:D

We stay long enough to eat and then off to the stadium...I like to get to the game at least an hour early and it starts at 7:00.

We all try to be very supportive of each other, especially during po's. In fact, I have Ridge picked in my playoff pick-em for D1 Champion. I know we don't give Ridge much press, but that is YOUR job as a Ridge fan. Our job is to stir up interest in OUR teams. Us Falls fans are on the Strake and Fair threads supporting those teams and vice-versa. If there were a Ridge thread, we would all be there to support it, also.:D
Keep spreading the word about the message board and building 175A's poster base. Everyone else needs to know the prowess and virtures of this district and the teams in it.;)

I was telling my husband about the blocking comment here and he said "see, I'm not the only one who notices that"! I'll be watching Shane run like the wind and he'll be yelling "DID YOU SEE THAT BLOCK!!". He'll almost miss the TD because he is so impressed with the O-line:D. They have really stepped up and done an excellent job.

The question was how to beat them. Well, maybe after Fran leaves. :D
