I don't think there is any team that's more Jekyll and Hyde than Tech. They're 7-4 and really should be 9-2 at worst. Their problem is they've been real good in some games and had various problems in the losses, but never bad in all areas in the same game.
What we've seen:
They're the best at passing the ball. They're #1 in yards and high in passing efficiency. It really doesn't matter that they don't run the ball much since they put up the yards.
They score a lot. Points count no matter how you get them. I'd rather be able to score fast vs. depending on grinding out drives.
Tech doesn't do a bad job holding onto the ball, they just had major meltdowns in the Mizzou and Colorado games. Harrell cost us the CU game and should've made the Mizzou game closer.
Tech has been sliding down the chart in Red Zone offense, but they're good on 3rd down conversions.
Kicking, punting, and the return games on offense and defense are adequate to good.
The scoring defense is 4th in the Big 12 and the total defense is 5th.
Tech is 1st or 2nd in every pass defense category in the Big 12.
The run defense is terrible and that leads to bad 3rd and 4th down defense.
Tech doesn't create enough turnovers. That's not a good combo when you don't have run defense and can't stop people on 3rd down.
Tech is actually one of the better teams in the Big 12 at sacking the QB.
NEEDS:
We need more consistent QB play. Harrell has been good to great in 9 games this year. He didn't cut it in the Mizzou and Colorado games. Some think he was playing hurt in those games after the cheap shot in the A&M game, some think those teams know how to scheme for him, and we know the OL played bad in those games. The bottom line is we can't have a QB who throws 4 picks in a game and expect to win.
We need more playmakers on defense. We need to create turnovers. The pass defense is fine as far as defending passes, but it would be nice to get a few picks. The run defense gets gouged and we also don't force enough fumbles.
After a bad year in the return game last year, I'm fine with the special teams this year.
I really can't gripe that much about the offense since they still produce. It looks boring at times, but they put up yards on UT each year and they beat most teams.
I could live with Tech not being the most penalized team in the Big 12, but I want them to still have opponents get the most penalty yards.
It's not completely broken, but it's frustrating to be so good in many areas and still have glaring holes. It sure is crazy to have great passing and bad running to go with great pass defense and bad run defense!:D Maybe there is truth to the thought that they have bad run defense because they don't practice against it enough.
