He plays for South Garland, who are blue. He wears number one, does not like to tuck his shirt in, and has scored at least one TD. That is about it :D :D :D Just kidding, have a good Thursday

He's committed to UT. He's rivals videos look good. He only had about 20 receptions last year though, but he still looks like about the top overall prospect in Texas at reciever.

ALLIN pretty much covered it ;) .

Seriously, Payne was grossly overshadowed by his teammate Raimond Pendleton who hauled in over 80 balls last year. Payne is 6'3 185 and is regarded by some recruiting experts as the top receiving prospect in the state. However, he's not just a guy who looks good in a uniform...he can ball. He only touched the ball 77 times last year and he accounted for 72 points...not a bad ratio, eh? He was used mostly as a RB last season but will likely assume the role as the teams #1 receiver this fall. From watching his video, he is an extremely polished receiver who catches everything in his hands and has excellent ability after the catch. Really, he ain't a bad RB either, but his skill set is perfect to be an awesome receiver at the next level. He's a real threat to score everytime he gets the ball.

It amazes me that a guy that has 20 rec the previous year can be viewed as the states number one?????

Catching a few passes does not a great rec. make. How are his field smarts, attitude, team play etc

Really, you don't have to have good stats to be a top prospect. It's more about your physical atributes and how your skills translate to the next level. Conversely, one could have otherworldly numbers, but hardly get a look during recruiting.

Payne's case is somwhat comparable to that of Greg McElroy (last week's cover boy). Both are fantastic players who just happened to be playing on the same team with equally fantastic players who just happened to be a year older. Both are blessed with all the tools, but they just haven't had a chance to be "the guy" yet. They should put up huge numbers this year, but even if they don't, they'll be prized recruits. Both McElroy and Payne have skyrocketed on recruiting lists because of their great showings at camps this spring and because of their flashes of brilliance last year.

I don't know if you have a Rivals.com membership, but if you could see Payne in action, you would have no question about him being a top prospect.

when i was at south i expected duron montgomery to be a higher prospect than phillip. but there both good and south will be good the talent has just grown at that school.

great point ktchamp. you can have weak stats and be a top prospect because of your physical attributes. kevin bryan hardly had the ball thrown to him for 2 years as a starter and signed with a&m as a junior. that is just one example of a zillion.

Kevin Bryan could not catch and was too slow, that is why he is now 6'5" 300 lbs and moved to the offensive line as a guard at A&M.

Going back to the point made... Kelley on Longview this year didnt have awesome stats, but was regarded as one of the states top prospects.

Big Firm, Do you know who will be playing QB for South this year? I know it will hard to replace Reever. But I also know that Moss has done alot with that program since he has been at South.

Firm,

I have seen one list that has Montgomery among the top 10 receiving prospects himself, but every list I've seen has Payne at the very top.

Unless they've had someone unexpected really step up, I believe South will be starting Lemon Roberts at QB. He'll be a Jr. this fall.

Payne has very good skills but i would not consider him the top reciever prospect in Texas but he will be up there

I'm gonna take that with a grain of salt, being from Garland and knowing about ya'lls huge rivalry. I really wanna make it back to g-town for the Naaman/South game or Garland/South game to see this guy!

Reever graduated after 03 season, Kent QB'd for South last year and I don't remember if he was a Jr. or a Sr.

Kent was a senior.

when are y'all gunna put Moody up there...he has to be one of the most underrated running backs in the state, and he gets a bad rep for playing on a not so good team last year. I mean if your gunna put jamal evans up there why not Moody...

yeah because longview runs the ball 80 percent of the time so no receiver will have great stats in that system. think if kelley played for slc or allen or denton ryan where they pass all the time. his stats would have been unbelievable. you cannot go by stats is my point. the same could be said for a great rb that is with a passing team. they are not going to rack up the stats either.

le'mon roberts should start at qb as far as i know. and kent was the awsome qb south had last year played with him since middle school.

It really is amazing how these incredible athletes do indeed get used so little - or the system a team has makes such poor use of their talent. Think what SLC would do with a kid like Payne? It would not be fair. I dunno - it just seems like offensive systems pale in comparison to the talent.

He also has scholarship offers from Miami, and aTm im pretty sure. Is their a better talent pool than Miami's at any other university. My personal opinion is no, they no how to evaluate talent. Just having an offer from them has to mean something.

Like KT said, " Payne had 77 touches and 72 points". That when he wasn't even the best athlete on the team last year. Doesn't sound like he was under utilized?

Payne will be expected to be THE man at SG this fall. He is one of the few returning starters the Colonels will have on offense. Payne is a great player and athlete, and there is little doubt he will shine; he fits in nicely with the string of amazing recievers SG has had throughout the years...

Question: what does "offer check" mean?

I decided to check out some spring games this week. Went to South's last night and I am planning on going to Garland's tonight. I have to say that South looked fairly athletic at their skill positions and Payne delivered on his hype. I also noticed a lot of recruits on the sideline--any ideas on who else is getting looks?

Does anyone know what kind of format Garland uses during their spring game? South used a controlled format.

If he was part of their track team that I saw at Regionals, then he surely can run. South Garland's Track team was very, very fast.

big, did you mean recruiters? i don't know how recruits are recognized.

Big Slim

I meant recruiters. From what i could tell, Texas was there (for Payne I assumed), Wisconsin, Kansas, Purdue, and a couple others that i couldn't tell.
