Get the new SI this week if you want to check out their version of the Top 25 HS's nationwide in sports. The criteria was number of titles or domination over the past decade in a variety of sports; scholar/athletes; and, athletes that have gone on to bigger things.

Two made it from Texas - Highland Park comes in at 16 and Duncanville comes in at (I think) 24. Kind of surprised, almost shocked, we didn't see SLC - they stacked up superior to many of the schools - even Highland Park really.

No. 1 in the Nation? No contest really - Long Beach Cal Poly. That school has been unbelievable for 40 years in sports.

I would have liked to have seen them venture outside of Metro. areas - but, hey, at least there was no East Coast bias. I don't think one school from New York or Massachusetts made it.

Although not a dominant public school and perhaps not in the same league as the schools mentioned above, Dallas Jesuit does very well in all sports every year. Look at this year:

Football...won UIL 10-5A and went 2 rounds in playoffs (also won 20 TCIL titles in the past)
Soccer...made it to the final 8 in UIL 5A playoffs (always a dominant program)
Baseball...in the second round of the playoffs again (UIL playoffs in '04, too)
Basketball...made it to the playoffs again (playoffs in '04)
Cross Country...10-5A District Champs
Always competitive in Tennis, Golf, Swimming, and Wrestling (had a UIL State Champion wrestler in '04)
Lacrosse...playoff team in '05
Rugby...Top 10 in Region
Track...4th in District, sent five to regionals

I am sure I'm missing some, but this schools does well in all sports. As a grad, I'm also very biased. They aren't a dominant football program, which is what most care about, but they have a very fine history. And, even though some think otherwise, they don't recruit athletes and they force every kid to do "above and beyond" in the classroom. I heard a college coach say that of the seven boys trying to play college football off this year's team, the lowest SAT score was an 1140. Not bad. Personally, I think HP does the best in all sports of all the high schools in Texas.

who cares jc... carroll does that every year and no one says anything because it is expected... and no one gets on a forum and and writes down everything there school ever did right...no one said that SI was going after private schools did they? or schools that recruit ..did they? so stop with the unneeded comments and spare us the time and attitude. Jesuit is gay anyways...

And i am not just saying it is carroll.. it is denton ryan, katy, woodlands, ect....get over your spare school and get a life...

Duncanville being on that list is not all the shocking, they have won state titles in just about every major sport both guys and girls. The basketball and baseball teams are always tough, and football came into its own in 96 after they were able to hire Bob Alpert. As far as 5A programs go, I would say Duncanville has the top athletic program in the metroplex and a argument could be made that they are the best in the state.

Their is no way that there is bias in the article..I didn't even read it yet, but I bet 75% of the schools in the top 25 are private...for obvious reasons.

As for the east coast bias thing, hellloooo, there can't be a bias either way. The poll is really stupid because it means dominance within your state.

I could flip that around as, NY is better than Texas athletically because hey...if we don't have dominant programs, that means EVERYONE here is good not just a few schools...

As for Lacrosse, its the 4th major sport and catching baseball real fast...this coming from a baseball player.

I am a Jesuit grad (happily married by the way, as are all eight of my good friends from high school...and we all had plenty of dates in hs, especially since our sister school had over 800 equally horny girls waiting for school to end to see persons of the opposite sex), and I did not mean to offend. I was praising a sports program that tries to excel in all sports and that offers many different sports so all kids can participate for their school. I didn't even mention hockey, and I think Jesuit finished as one of the top teams in the state in that sport, too. I realize this is a football state full of folks who care only about football. And, I realize there is a bias against private schools. I also realize there are some folks out there who hate Jesuit. I was just praising my alma mater on a good year. I think HP, Duncanville, SL Carroll, etc...all have wonderful sports programs and all are very deserving of any and all recognition they deserve. As for the gay comment, I'll pass on slinging mud. Again, sorry to offend.

I initially had Drgnbkr's reply about D'ville - say what? But SI mentions that in '99 they came very close to winning all three men's state titles - sorry I've forgotten - but I think it was basketball they came up just short in. Yes, they did focus in on girls basketball - Tameka Catchings and crew - but I generally agree they are deserving. Of course, one reason we never think of D'ville much is no one here posts about them. But, they've been less of a force in the 2000's - yes?

Of the two from Texas - I thought SLC was a bit better than Highland Park.

hp has been more successful for more years than anyone. they are good in everything except softball and basketball it seems. they get thrown under the bus on football sites due to their continuous inability to win that big game and get a ring, but who can argue all the trophies. i don't know what si used to rate the schools, but i can't believe duncanville has been more uil successful than several other schools in the last ten years. si may have wanted to spread the wealth a little.

In the 98-99 school year, Duncanville won state in football, advanced to the state tournament in basketball and baseball, they lost to Bellaire in the baseball state tournament, cant remember if it was the semis or the finals. In basketball they made it back to the state tournament in the 99-2000 school year, they were led by Brian Boddicker and a abundance of other great athletes, I cant remember if they won it that year or not, but they were good. Duncanville is always competing for state titles in sports outside of the 3 major ones. I know that soccer has been good to the panthers as well as track and golf and swimming. They are called the city of champions for a reason, I believe they have brought home 17 team UIL championships since 1975. If you count for v-ball, girls basketball, girls soccer and add that to the legacy of the mens basketball and baseball teams, then you have as succesful a program that you will find in Texas. The only sport that does not have the history of the other ones is football, and over the last 10 years they have a pretty impressive resume.

Highland park is winning the state championships in tennis and golf as we speak and have for several years now. Not that tennis and golf are great, but they are UIL sports.

And why should Duncanville's success in '99 have to do with an article in 2005?

Why not Celina? Even though now it looks like ol' G.A. may not have been doing it as legit as everyone thought.

farmerfan
05-12-2005, 01:54 PM
Celina should not be on there because it is more than a football related article, the only other thing Celina was succesful in was baseball in 02 when they won a state title, other than that, football has been the only thing they have dominated in.
Duncanville's success in 99 has to do with the article because it was marking over the last 10 years. I would like to know of any other school that won a title in football, and advanced to the state tournament in basketball and baseball all in the same school year? No duncanville is not a highland park, no one in the state is. However Duncanville has remained a very succesfull athletic program in both mens and womens sports.

I have a lot of respect for the all-around schools and they have a common denominator and that's they are richer schools and you'll see them winning titles in some of the more yuppier sports. You can't deny them the honor of winning state and some good athletes choose to not play the normal big-time sports. All the bogus sports you talk about count in the Olympic medal count. Would you rather the U.S. win or lose in lacrosse?

Ha...a borrowed goat. That's a good one.
Like it was stated in a previous post...I don't
know any rugby players...I would probably have
to look real hard to find one. The ones I see on
TV look pretty scrawny. I'm 6ft. 240lbs. with a fairly good
record in bar room brawls worldwide...I grew up in a
neighborhood that averaged a fight about every 3 minutes...
So against a guy in a pair of booty shorts (circa 1981) and
a tendency to huddle up with other men in booty shorts...I like my chances.
