View Full Version : Bitter Rivals

A post on another thread made me think of this. Thought it would be neat to hear of some other bitter rival stories. Marshall is by far Longview's longest and most hated rival. It is tradition for Longview students to steal Marshall city limit signs every year the week before the game and display them all over campus. On the other hand, Marshall reverts to much more vandalistic type activites. One year they came and spray painted LoHos and other obsentities on the bridge running over a main street connecting two campus buildings. Even better, if you have ever been to Lobo stadium you know we have LOBOS spelled in bushes in the bowl of the south end zone. One year they pushed down the top and bottom bar in the B and the bushes then spelled LOHOS.

Does anyone else have similar stories?

Like I said earlier Nacogdoches pouring Diesel on the football field at Lufkin spelling N & D . And we were told the next year if there was any retaliation we would be kicked out of school!

Yea, that was the year that I graduated from Nac. A bunch of my boy's were the one's that did that. They were supposed to take the panther statue from the Burger King, guess they never got around to it.

Robert E. Lee high school, known as Tyler Lee now, used to be the REBELS( back in the 70's) and not the RED RAIDERS. There was alot of hatred between Robert E. Lee and John Tyler and since, it seems as if the rivary isn't even there. This was more than just a football game, it was North Tyler aginst South Tyler, and I hate to say it but black against white. Lee had a Rebel flag that was 50 yards long and a cannon that blasted when the Rebels scored irritating the hell out of John Tyler fans, football team, band, you name it!

The student body from Lee would drive around all over Tyler hanging Rebel flags out the window and even some would dare to drive through the J.T. campus. J.T. would get even by driving through the horseshoe on the Lee campus only to find out that the Lee kids could lock them in once they'd entered. If you think Longview and Marshall have a thing, try looking at how violent these two schools got just between the students and the fans. Fights happened on and off the campuses all week long, before and after the game, and later on that night. These two schools hated each other with a pasion. I can recall hearing about a Lee student that broke into Rose Stadium climbed the flag pole and hung a Rebel Flag by a rope that was tied around the tip of the pole. He greased the pole on his way down making it almost impossible to get it down with the technology that they had back then..

It's not like that anymore for the better I suppose, the rivary has since left the city with the departure of Allen Wilson years ago. Lee vs JT week is definatley a top ten in TEXAS!

In the Garland / South Garland wars there have been many capers, like South stealing our canon, etc. My favorite was during a winter back in the 1970's, a few FFA boys from Garland took a bunch of rye grass and spread it on the South from lawn one night. A couple of weeks later, in the midst of all that straw colored, dormant Bermuda grass, spelled out in beautiful green rye grass was SOUTH
SUCKS.
Took 'em a while to get rid of it too.

Man, it's a good thing that Lee and JT don't have that type of rivalry anymore. Someone would be killed these days.

That happened way before that statue was even there. The first time I can remember was about '74 at Panther Stadium on S.Raguet. I know they did it again about '83. And about '99 or so they spray painted obscenities at Morris Frank Park and on the high school and burned a N in the field. Im sure Lufkin kids have done things but its usually in retaliation-and the Nac police are usually watching after they got us. Lufkin and Nac have been playing since 1911 so im sure these things have been going on since 1912.

I think Tobias is graduating. My nephew started at LB for the 2000 team. No.2 ranking and 10-0 regular season. First round of the playoffs Mexia beat them something like 40-0!

My ex-father-in-law was one of the coaches in Diboll in the 80's. If I remember right it was when coach Baker was head coach. He told me they had a running back that was very good. He just could not tell his left from his right. So they just told him which lineman to run behind each play. I think he got about 280 yards against Huntington in the first half.

That was kinda like Victoria and Stroman before consolidation....North vs South...aka...white vs black/hispanics.

I don't think it was as bad as REL and TJ...that sounds MUCH crazier!

You forgot to mention the 70-21 whipping this past season. 10 possesisions, 10 touchdowns. Itll be interesting to see what happens next year when Coppell is at home.

Oh yeah, our pep squad got benched the first half for running through your spirit line, two seasons ago, I think.

Eh that really didnt bother us to much at least we scored more the Field Goal i think 56-3 was alot worse then that lose...Plus that game was for the district 5-5A District Title...Coppell is a much better team then they have been over the past few years (coughs 70-21 slc, 45-19 Euless Trinity, 45-0 I.Mac)

I agree with that. I know 2 games is only 2 games, but your right, both towns bring everyone to those games. The teams and fans do respect each other 100% and the game is so hyped up in the semi's. I hope we get to do it again this year.

I remember that. That was 2002 Carroll's first year in 5A and Carroll came into the game still without any respect even though they were 9-0 and 4-0 in district. Coppell came into the game 7-2 and 4-0 in district. It was the last game of the regular season and it was in Coppell. For some reason people thought that Coppell should either be favored or a small underdog. For some reason the genious that Coppell had as a defensive coordinator decided that he would blitz 7 and cover with 4. It looked like a punt block on every play. Carroll burned them all day and ended up with a score of 55-3 which brought Carroll's total points for the regular season up to 500 and the total points given up for the regular season to 100.

Lufkin and Nacogdoches USE to be bitter rivals. My parent told me stories about things that would happen between the two schools in the 40's and 50's.
The one story that I have always remembered was the one about how the Lufkin and Nacogdoches game would always be played on Saturday @ 2:00 P.M. Whether the game was in Lufkin or Nacogdoches fans would gather at the two lane Angelina River bridge that separates both counties, They would bring a picnic lunch and wait for the opposing fans to show up and try and cross the bidge to the game. I am told that there were some big brawls in those days before the game and it never failed that a few players and fans from both sides ended up being thrown out or arrested for fighting during game that afternoon.

That WAS a real rivalry then, those days are long gone now and the rivalry is dead as well. Since 1980 Lufkin is 23 - 2 against Nacgdoches, just history now.

It's not in 5A, but you have a military rivalry in SA. Cole on Ft. Sam Houston is in the same district as Randolph on Randolph AFB. The kids really hate to lose to each other. One of my friends son had 29 tackles against Cole in 2003.

A bitter rivalry must include fans that hate the other team for some reason like actions of the students, coaches you hate, dirty players, etc. Lufkin-SLC is not a bitter rivalry.

You also need each team to win some of the games. I guess that takes out Lufkin-Longview! :p
