Big Showdown this Friday at Burger Stadium in Austin. Austin High is in the driver's seat for the District 25-5A title after beating Westlake and Anderson. Bowie has also set itself up for a playoff spot after winning in San Marcos last week 14-7 in a defensive battle. Both teams are 2-0 in District. Austin High comes in the favorite.
Who wins this game?

This will be a very interesting game. While our game with them was a see-saw, very even match, they beat us fair and square--quite a change from the AHS we used to annihilate every year. In most years, I think Bowie has the best talent in the district. AHS is awfully big compared to us this year, but we regularly beat larger teams so that's really no excuse. I suspect you probably can match them physically, so it will come down to coaching and motivation. As I said to begin with, it will be very interesting! I guess I'll root for you (although because of family ties I'd normally root for AHS when they're not playing WHS) in hopes that if you beat them and we beat you, maybe we could all share the district crown! I think you'll be one of the four going into the playoffs--in the large school division with, hopefully, us.
Go, Bulldogs!

from what I've seen of Bowie, they have the speed to keep up with Austin, but lack a lot of big game experience that may cost them in a close game. Bowie has a lot of Jrs. making big-time contributions and have played some close games this year, but not vs. a veteran team like Austin. Austin played sloppy in their win over Anderson, and I expect they will bring the same intensity they had vs. Westlake to the game this Friday vs. Bowie.
I say Austin High by 14.

I really wish these juniors had played since Day 1. Bowie could easily be 5-0 if they had.

Should be a great game. I think the Maroons are finally getting healthy. I don't know if Davis Collins is back or not. He only played a few plays last week. Emory Blake looked great last week. (scored 3 times)
I know Bowie has the big WR that seems to score a TD or two in every game.
It may come down to which defense can slow the other offense.

They were up 42-14, until Anderson scored a TD late in the game against the Maroons reserves. I don't think they were as sharp as they were against Westlake, but I thought they played pretty well considering they were coming off the Westlake game. The game was never in doubt as the Maroons scored TDs on their 1st three possesions.
A 14 point win will be fine with me. :)
I'm picking Bowie to win this one. Not just because I'd like to see the logjam at the top of the district....I think Bowie will be more 'up' for this game than will Austin. Bowie has the talent, add the motivation and I think they'll pull this off!

I think Bowie gets in the playoffs this year, but I don't think they will win tomorrow night.

I agree, I think Bowie will make playoffs as the 3rd place team in the district. I just can't see them beating Austin High. Bowie has lost to McNeil and Round Rock who have both lost to Stony Point (Austin High beat Stony Point 24-21 without Emory Blake or Davis Collins). Austin High has also beaten Westlake who in my opinion will beat Bowie.
How could Austin High not be up for this game? It's the first time all season that the team will be completely healthy, and Bowie is our second biggest rival.
Should be a fun one to watch, but I gotta go with Austin High by at least 2 touchdowns.

From what I've seen both teams have a lot of firepower but I'll take Austin High in this one.

willie - I can see your point of view, but this:

...doesn't mean much at all. You just can't use comparative properties like that. First of all, Bowie lost on the last second in both of those games. Secondly, Bowie had 2 different QBs playing vs. Round Rock, and our current QB's first Varsity start ever was vs. McNeil.
I know Austin High is good this year. And this is definitely a rivalry because I've hated the Maroons since the early 90's when my sister was playing basketball at Bowie. Both teams will be up. I can see Bowie losing this game, but I think I'll go ahead and attend the game. ;)

Evaluator - Thanks for the link! That was a very nice preview. Got me thoroughly pumped.
Austin's playmakers definitely look a littler bigger than Bowie's. Are they all seniors? I could understand that if so. Bowie's playmakers are all sophomores and juniors.

You're welcome, it did the same for me! This is the best game in Austin this week and I'd love to see it in person. Bowie's played hard in every game this year and should have a good chance in this one. Philander Moore is a threat to go the distance everytime he touches it. Good luck to Bowie tomorrow night it should be a great one!

Numbers: 11, and 22 are juniors
44, 5, and 34 are seniors...to answer your question bowie
I am thus far impressed with the athleticism Bowie has this year. I think these are the two most athletic teams in the district (both speed and size). I think Austin High is probably the bigger team (offensive line has 3 guys at least 6'5'' and 270, one of which is going to play at UT next year). But again as the game draws closer and I beginning to believe more and more that it will be a closer game throughout.
Tell me a little about the new QB, Matt Dodds is the name right? What happened to Holcombe?

I'm really not sure what happened to the other 2 QBs. I saw the Round Rock game. I believe Ramirez played the first half. Then Holcombe played the second half. I wasn't able to go to another game until the Akins game 2 weeks ago. I think Coach Ables just finally felt it was time to move the stars from last year's JV team to the starting lineup. Dodds just has a better handle on the passing offense than the other two guys. He's got a little better arm, but from the one game I've seen him play it's not an All-State arm or anything.
Perry is going to be an amazing WR in 2 years. He's just a sophomore and is listed on the Bowie site as 6'3 210. He's probably closer to 6'2. You know how they exaggerate. :D
Don't fall asleep on our Jr. running back either. Heath Hohmann runs hard and seems to break at least one long run each game.
Your comment on athleticism is correct. These young playmakers that got moved into the starting lineup won the District Track title last school year. They're fast.
Should be a good game. If Austin gets ahead, I want to see Bowie fight back and make it a game. Don't fold like a tent. I've seen both schools do just that in this rivalry. One team gets up by 14 and it turns into a 35-pt blowout.

Oh, I almost forgot.
If this is a close game late, watch out for our secret weapon. Nick Grassoff, Senior Kicker and Punter. He's made a handful of FGs from 42-45 yards this year. He's also averaging 45+ yards per punt.
