Things that make me mad as an alumni:
Why are we playing PESH and CARTER at HBJ.. that is not our home. We have a total of 4 games at Williams, and 1 of those games we are (V).

Why in the HECK are we playing so many Thursday games.

AND MY #1..... SOUTH GARLAND ON A THURSDAY!!!!!!!! WHAT!!!!????UGH! Now I cannot drive from Lubbock because of classes on Friday. UGH.

I am pretty sure this all has to do with freaking Sachse... hey Garland ISD, you have 7 high schools, BUILD ANOTHER STADIUM!

And this schedule makes me angry!!! That is all.

Absolutely no respect for traditions. That's on of the main components of HS football that should be respected and scheduled around. Until a school gets a tradtition, the existing tradtitions should be honored and prioritized first. The new stadium is the answer, it needs to moved upon quickly.

Is Homer Johnson aware of what is going on with Garland Owls schedule?

I agree, that is a pretty crappy schduale, maybe Garland should build a stadium or 2 lol

I am sure since all 7 High schools have 2 home stadiums and Garland usually is the only one that plays at Williams as home the most everyone else was complaining so we had to have some home at HBJ

Each year, Garland has had two or three Thursday games. They have a blind draw for each weeks games among the coaches - winner gets first choice of stadiums, nights, etc. We must have lost the draw for the games that week. Building a third stadium was included in the bond package that passed three or four years ago, but it is a low priority (finishing the fine arts center is the biggest thing right now).

I personally HATE playing home games at HBJ - the atmosphere is not the same as it is at Williams. We had a home game there against Rowlett a couple of years ago, and it felt like we were playing at a neutral site. I understand that there will be new turf at HBJ by the time the season rolls around - if that's true, at least we won't be playing on the old concrete turf they had before.

Get that new stadium built! - let Rowlett, Sachse and Naaman use it primarily. South and Lakeview can share HBJ as primary residents, and North and Garland will use Williams.

Redraider: Don't you feel a bit of a cold coming on for the week of the South game? ;)

Owlfan 1, I carry mail right behind HBJ and each day I can see the progress with the new turf. They have been on it about 4 weeks now and progress seems slow, but deliberate. The new carpet will be in before you know it. Not a solution, but it will help.

Wow. Playing South on a Thursday is going to be wierd......

If you would like to donate 2 million dollars, I'm sure GISD will build you a new stadium. Heck, they'll probably name it after you. Until that time, 7 teams will have to share two stadiums. As much as Garland would like to have Williams as it's home stadium, North, Naaman, and Sachse also use the stadium as their home. Therefore, if two teams have home games, then one has to go to HBJ. Williams is a great atmosphere, but HBJ is a better stadium.

As for the South game on a Thursday night; that's ridiculous. It is the best draw of any Garland or South in sales; I believe last year almost 60K was raised. Playing in Fort Worth on a Friday night would even be better. Hopefully next year's schedule will be better.

.

There was a bond package passed a few years ago that had a new stadium as a part of it, so it is in the plans. The grapevine has said that it will most likely be built in the Rowlett/ Sachse area (I've also heard that it could be somewhere along 190). It will be built eventually - hopefully before they build the new HS in Rowlett (out near Waterview).

A less expensive solution would be to expand the JV stadium on Rowlett's (or Sachse's) campus to seat 7500 - 10000.

I heard it was going to go up near where Centerville Rd. deadends at the extension of 190 (I forgot the name of it there) near Rowlett Creek, west of the creek and west of where the extension turns into Rowlett Rd.

Northeast Parkway/ Rowlett Road and Centerville, just up the road from Firewheel Bible Church...

Interesting...

hahaha right by the landfill. Yeah, the property value shouldn't be too much for GISD! :)

this is probably the worst schedule in many years. The one thing that makes me mad (being a senior next year) is that with the South game on a thursday, defend the school night will be on a wednesday which means 2 more days of school. Im also sure that Homer does know about this, and has been up to his ears in complaints about it. However, the thing i dont understand is that a few years ago the Williams family donated a lot of money to the district and one of the incentives was that Garland would not be visitor at Williams, but i have yet to see this come in effect.

Yeah owl fan.... its a cold.
And I will only miss Intro to Film Studies and American Sign Language.. I mean come on. And Tech plays Nebraska at Nebraksa on Saturday, so I wont be missing a home game. So yeah.... I am sick! lol.

Seems I remember that bond package also included diamond vision screens for both Williams and HBJ, but that never happened.

The schedule is not good, but look at it this way, you will be able to attend alot of other games on Friday nights this fall!

The replay screens are dependant on sponsorship, I believe - they have Baylor Healthcare ready to go as their primary sponsor, but have had a hard time getting others. It keeps getting put off year to year. Who knows...

Playing SG on a Thursday is going to suck... but at least we get them at Williams.

PESH at HBJ would be okay, but it really stinks to have to play Carter there...

I've seen alot of Owl games and to me I don't think it matters that much "where" or "when" they play. The Owls always have a strong showing of fans. I guess it could be worse ei.. Ennis game in Ennis on a Thursday night.I like the fact that the Owls continue to play a very strong non-district shcedule.

its not as much a problem of the fans showing up for that many thursday games as it is for the students to have to wake up and go to school the next day. With this schedule there will be a lot of sleepless nights for those of us that are involved in the higherlevel classes that tend to give unnecessary amounts of homework.

They should do away with Thursday games! Have early and late games on Saturday.

Here we go again!! Tough non-district schedule so you can get prepared to go "one" deep in the playoffs and then talk about how tough you played in that "one" playoff game or how the coaches screwed up the play calling or how the coaches didn't play the right kids at the right time. Whew! I think I covered all of them? At least all of the same ole' same ole'! I'm sure there are some new ones on the horizon???

Well I guess if you go "one deep" in the play-offs and you get beat by the eventual Div. 1 championship team that still ain't good enough for some folks.
And what championship team that has never lost and the coaches make all the right calls and the refs are on your side and no players are injured and everyone does a perfect job are you behind "RR" ?

Rough: Losing to Longview in 03 in the first round, beating Lufkin and losing to Allen in 04 in the second round, and then losing to Tyler Lee in the first round of 04 does not sound to bad to me. It just sucks to have to play the best teams in the state first round every year. I dont think any team Garland could play in the pre-district could get us ready for those teams. But anyways, GIG EM OWLS, and WRECK EM TECH!

GarlandOwl06
05-17-2005, 08:43 PM
I would also like to add that both South and North got absolutely destroyed in there 1st round playoff exits. North had a player talkin big in the paper a week before the game and obviously he did not know what east texas football was about as longview ran all over them in an absolute no contest. South also was absolutely outplayed all 4 quarters in there blowout loss to mesquite. So i wouldnt go talkin about garland who at least has beatin Lufkin in both playoff appearances against them. More than any other of these teams can say.

Well, if we're gonna stoop this low, at least Garland lost to future state champion tyler lee instead of being smothered by a 4-6 team that barely made the playoffs... but that's not important; just the horrible fixiation that Garland actually expects its coaches to rotate kids well!!! What a travesty for high school football! :D

I am assuming that South Garland vs Garland is a huge rivalry in town, so why would they play it on a Thursday night? I just moved to garland and am looking to see some great football this Fall--I hope the Graland district can deliver!

Go Graland :D

Hey Slim! Welcome! I think you'll enjoy the competition. South Garland, North Garland and Garland are the three "teams to beat" this year, but watch out for Rowlett and Lakeview, too. They could be in the race all the way to the wire.
Not really sure what Naaman will have this year. Sachse will be better, but may still be a couple of years away from being able to stay competitive.

Stay on this board and you'll learn a few things:

1) There are a lot of passionate and awesome HS football fans in Texas.

2) There are a lot of Garland fans on this board.

3) Roughrider hates Garland High, their fans and all things black and gold.

4) This is the best HS football message board in the state, bar none.

Good to have you in the community!

Big Slim,

The thing that you will learn first, is that every excuse you can think of will have already been used by the Owl faithful!! Their slogan is "WE WILL WIN". But, they forgot to add the rest: " We will win and if we don't we will have a dang good excuse for it"! :p

I hope you brought your crying cloth with you! You will need it!

So did anyone see last night's spring game? (anyone, at least, that will give and honest report--that means I don't need to hear Roughrider's account about how he thought they looked bad) I wasn't able to make it and was wondering how they're going to be this year. Is Crosby going to live up to the hype I've heard on him?
