Just under 4 min left to play. Madison is up 35-14 and he is still on the field.

I dont get it.

Hope he makes it back for the playoffs. Good luck Devin.

Read "Tribute to Thomas by the #'s for the answer". Ron Rittiman asked him to come out, but he "asked" him. He did not tell him. When you ask someone to do something you are giving them the option.

H e was still in the game because he is a kid. a high school kid who loves to play football.

and think back to when you were a kid.

did you want to come out of a game?

did you want to stop playing?

did you think about injuries and protecting yourself for the post season?

the answer, if you are honest, is NO

this is not the NFL
the kids are not paid to play

they play because they want to play

they love the game
and they do not want to stop playing just because their team is up by a lot or a little
they want to play the game because playing makes them happy. period.

two reasons

1. Jim streety nuff said
2. Media and the hype of Thomas vs Wright

Humpty,

When I was a kid the coach did not ask, he told.

Hind sight is always 20/20.

This does seem to fit Streety's M.O.

not sure what you are getting at?

so star players should be taken out when their team is ahead strictly because they are too valuable to get injured?

think for one second about the kid...the star kid.

dont you think he WANTS to play?

dont you think he WANTS to be on the field with his friends while he can?

so now if we get to the point of regulating a players playing time in the high school level, we know we are taking this **** way too serious.

get real.

its high school football.

fights happen on the playground at elementary school

mouths are put on water fountains

and sports injuries happen

sit back, enjoy the game

and most importantly

let the god dang kids play while they can

All I am saying is I have watched a ton of High School football in my time and when you are up 21 with 3 mins to play and you have dominated the last 2 quarters, your star player comes out. Hell. Reagans coach had Marcus Wright pulled because he knew the game was over.

Exactly. It's been well documented on this board.

All I am saying is that if you dont let the players play now, then when?!?!?!

How can someone be sooooo damn good that they are too good to play because they might actually get injured?!?!??!?!??!?!

'Hey coach, thanks for making me run until I felt like I couldn't run anymore. Thanks for making me lift weights and strive to get stronger and faster. Thanks for making me take all those hits during 2 a days and after school practice. Oh and a big thanks for only letting me play 1 and a half quarters because I am soo damn precious and valuable to this team that I in no way shape or form can be replaced. Thanks for putting all your eggs in one basket and realizing that the second I can not perform at my best, your team can go to ****.'

THAT IS NOT WHAT A PLAYER THINKS

A player wants to play

and it doesnt matter if they are up by 50 or down by 50

a player , star or not, wants to play.

LET THE KIDS PLAY

Sorry your up 35-14 with 4 minutes left and you have your best chance evr to go deep into the playoffs, he should have been sitting. I watch Jerod Douglas and belive me he probably wanted to stay in the game all the time, but when the game was well in hand his butt was sitting period.

O.K. Humpty. I give up.....

Wait, one more argument for my side.

The last player with this much talent in San Antonio was probably Jerod Douglas.
He played very few 4th quarters during the regular season from what I remember, because Judson was up 3 or more touchdowns.

I think Madisons coaches should have had the same approach with Devin.

For the record, Devin Thomas played in only TWO quarters against Seguin, THREE quarters against O'Connor, TWO quarters against Wagner, TWO quarters against Lee, FOUR quarters against Smithson Valley, and FOUR quarters against Reagan. He would not have touched the ball on any other Madison possesion had he not been injured and scored on that or the next play. Unfortunately, S%@T happens. it is not only a fact of football but a fact of life. You never know if your gonna make it home again each and every time you get in the car and leave. We just assume. Devin, his teammates, and coaches just assumed it was another football play. They have a great defense that posted yet another 2nd half shutout and shut down Marcus Wright in that 2nd half. They will be a contender even without Devin. With Devin they were all but a sure thing to face SLC (Allen has a HORRIBLE defense) in the state title game.

I would have to assume that The Madsion coaches thought hey this game is to close to call leave him in, if not he should have been sitting there is no other reason, what pad stats get him to 375 for the night what was it.

It takes Wright/Thomas about 10 seconds to score...
Thomas started the drive with more to on the clock...
I'd have left him in for the duration of the drive too...

With the game well out of reach, why risk injury to your franchise player? Get the other backs in the game for experience which will pay great benefits down the road. That's why you play the other players--to gain game time experience in case they are needed. Madison has done that this season, so why on earth keep him in the game except to build up stats. As humpty said injuries are part of the game or CKE hit the nail on the head better; but folks this one could have been avoided. Best to Devin. Hope it isn't a career threatning injury. He is an outstanding runner and has the ability to play at the next level.

The discussion of whether or not to leave a star player in when the game is done is certainly valid, but we are crossing into injury discussion and we need to be very consistent with that particular board policy.
