Ranger Stadium will soon have a new scoreboard if the booster club and Daktronics meets its goals. For the last seven months, the boosters have been investigating the feasibility of adding a new scoreboard system, which will include a video screen and new stadium sound system, along with traditional score tracking features. The system has been designed to serve students and fans well beyond coverage of football games. It is capable of supporting other sports, such as track and soccer, plus many other student activities which may occur at the stadium... pep rallies, Marching Band, half-time shows are but a few activities that will utilize the new scoreboard system.
Prior to settling on Daktronics, the boosters investigated various High School installations around the state for which similar Daktronics equipment was selected, finding those projects running smoothly and well accepted. Besides having an unequaled program for funding the project, Daktronics alone offers local support by having a regional office in San Antonio.
While the scoreboard design has not yet been locked in, we are looking at a design that would make the Ranger Stadium scoreboard have a unique look. Each installation attempts to take on the spirit and personality of the school for which it is installed. For Ranger Stadium, the boosters targeted a design that would demonstrate our school pride and athletic strengths.
To fund the project, Daktronics will sell space on sponsor panels for companies to place their logos. Virtually every scoreboard in the country, including the existing scoreboard at Ranger Stadium, have such advertising panels. To assure that only advertising suitable for our high school venue is displayed, every such logo must receive approval by school administrators and the booster club, before it is allowed on the scoreboard. These panels simply display the sponors name and/or logo, providing fans the knowledge of which firms have supported the school and its programs. Sponsors hope goodwill from their support will have a positive influence on their businesses.
Indeed, the scoreboard project will not be funded by either Comal ISD or the booster club. All costs are paid by Daktronics. They give the scoreboard and all its equipment to the school with no recourse, in exchange for the above described advertising rights. This works well, if and only if, sponsors see an advantage for advertising at that particular stadium. Obtaining these decisions from potential sponsors is where the project stands today. Daktronics and the booster club are only now beginning to seek sponsor support, since forward progress awaited Comal ISD project approval, which came March 30, 2005. Upon reaching the projects required advertising revenue threshold, the scoreboard project can then become a reality. Should revenues not be attainable, the project is halted.
The booster club is excited to bring this technology to Smithson Valley High School. Its benefits extend well beyond simply enhancing a sporting match. Student participation in the actual audio/video coverage of an event, will bring a new dimension in learning to those considering a career in broadcast journalism.
Please visit this website often to follow our progress in getting this project launched. Your continued support of Ranger programs is what makes our school great!

Daktronics is a good company, but you need to look around. Lufkin saved $140,000 dollars with another company that had installed the scoreboard and replay system in Reliant Stadium. Don't get me wrong, Daktronics makes a good looking scoreboard and you won't be unhappy with their product. However, booster clubs are always trying to find a way to get the most for every sponsor dollar. That's great if Daktronics is giving the scoreboard and screen to your school for the exclusive advertising rights. My next question to your booster club, how are you going to make money if you have given away your source of income to Daktronics. We found sponsors to pay for our replay system and we still have the rights to sell advertising/ commercial ads for the replay sysyem to local businesses and bring money back into our booster club. Your deal is only good long term if Daktronics agrees to give some portion of their advertising profits back to your booster club.
I would encourage you to check out the following links before you buy:

Hire two kids ages 7-10....
buy you a big board of slate...
Give the two kids each a piece of chalk...
And BAMM! you just saved yourself a bundle...
And you know what? ...Believe it or not the two kids
can keep score just as good as the 1.21 gigawatts contraption...
and NEITHER one make your team play any better.

Yes, that same company that worked with Reliant Stadium is also the one that installed Copperas Cove's video scoreboard.
It is the nicest that I have seen...and pretty large.

They don't even waste money on a stadium! :p They might as well shut down the stadium and play at Randolph or Marion!
Personally, I think schools owe it to the fans to have a stadium that is big enough to hold ALL of their fans and their opponent's fans. Clemens did not have a 26-5A stadium when they were in there. It's a 4A stadium for the home team and about a 3A stadium for the visitors. That's unacceptable for a growing area. Judson needs a bigger stadium even though they have one of the biggest in the area.

Why can't you get a better stadium? The area is growing and you have 2 schools and the tax rates on the houses should provide the money to build a better stadium. The Valley is not ready to beat SA, but Clemens might be able to play with Judson if Ferrara is the real deal at coach.

Clemens will not get a better stadium because they do not waste money.Having a video screen scoreboard and a large stadium is not part of the small town "feel" of the community. That is why 2 high schools were built. They do not want "big school" feel, if and when enrollment for Steele and Clemens reach the 5A mark, mark my words, a third high school will be built to keep all schools at 4A or 3A level.
Clemens will not beat Judson, not Waco. They may go undefeated in district again, but after that, its 1 and out in the play offs.

Wide-e-wide, your another one who doesn't know the facts. The artificial grass and replay screen are all provided to the school by sponsors. To add seats at Abe Martin the stadium must become ADA compliant. Since the stadium was built in 1973, Abe Martin is grandfathered under the ADA law. Any structural additions would require the school to make the stadium ADA compliant to current standards. So, unless you know where the school can come up with about five million dollars to do this, the stadium seating will stay the same. The replay board is not a waste.

I wonder if that's why Judson never adds on. It seems like more and more schools are putting seats in the end zone and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo looks like they're trying to get a NASCAR race!

I thought the new coaching was going to make the guys better. You still have Henry coming back.
I assume Judson will be good, but I can't promise it. They have to get a new RB, which has never been a worry before, but the well could be dry. The OL should be good and this year they didn't lose the whole defense like 2 years ago.

You know that. I know that. Clemens knows that. But, I am just gearing up for what the 5ATXFB Preview will say about Clemens. I know they will not start off in the top 25 rankings on this site. I know that they will not even break into the top 5 weekly rankings during the season unless they win all their district games by an average margin of 50 points. I don't care where they start off being ranked. All I care about and know is that MOST people will eat their words once Clemens tears thru all comers.
But for now, lets go with the flow and pretend that Clemens is not going to be solid.

I think Jim Carson is a good coach, but he never had great success out in Odessa. Bruce Bush is also good, but they don't have the track record of the guys in 26-5A.
Seguin couldn't beat Madison last year and they were on life support to end the year. SV and Judson took care of San Marcos and Clemens. Even you guys beat San Marcos the year before when you were in 26-5A and that was at Texas State.
The rest of the district leaves a lot to be desired and at least the guys who miss the playoffs in 26-5A can play competitive and sometimes beat the playoff teams. Even Lee beat teams from 27-5A last year and they were in last place.
Playing Seguin and San Marcos are good for the playoffs and getting Roosevelt and Waco isn't bad, but it doesn't help much when you're playing the #1 district in Round 1. It's not a guaranteed panacea because Midland Lee did lose in Round 1 last year and they're in a great district.
Correct. That is why I am glad the school I support is not wasting money on this.

Why? Does the new scoreboard also automaticlly add a touchdown or something? No, it is a tool that could very easily cost much less and be less fancy. There is no reason to have this kind of expensive stuff in a high school football game. They are not in the pros or college even, therefore, they do not need fancy eminities.
I agree that it may be a bit much, but hey, times are changing. Technology is getting cheaper and these scoreboards are popping up everywhere. Plus if it is being given to you, hey why not? There was probubly a time when people thought using a electronic scoreboards and PA systems during a high school game was too much. Better change with the times.

Yea, things change but does that always mean they are changing for the better? Whatever happened to good ol hard nosed football - hell - athletics in general. Let's change with the times, next year, lets go with the flow and be cool with 4 teams making the playoffs.I have a great idea since we are on this kick now, lets just make all the teams go to the playoffs, or better yet, lets not keep score, lets play for fun.Yea, thats it.Lets all play for fun under the huge stadiums that can seat 20K and that have huge, beautiful instant replay sceens and amazing, new safer turf. Yea, thats perfect.Although some may not like it, they must accept it and cahnge with the time because things simply change.

Winning is the ultimate thing to focus on, but the bells and whistles sure do make your team better.
The Indians were garbage until they moved into Jacobs Field and started winning.
The Orioles started winning more when they got Camden Yards.
How many times did the Rangers make the playoffs in Arlington Stadium?
The Astros have been a good team for many years, but they never won a series until they had a nicer place to play.
How about the Waco Lions? Oh, bad example! :p
The Midland Bulldogs missed the playoffs for 51 years and the first year in a new stadium they almost won state.
There are a lot of other examples and obviously some bad teams in good stadiums/arenas, but the bottom line is new stuff lifts the teams and brings out the fans and excitement. It's good for the schools.

Football is just football. The band is just a band until you put both of them together and now you have the ultimate Texas High School football experience at it's best! Some people just don't get it.
I think the whole Texas football experience is driven by the fierce competition, quality coaching, and crowds larger than other states have. For some towns, it's also the nice stadium.

He's not going to leave forever. He likes to fight too much to not come back and argue about stuff. People like Headliner will always come around for more discussion. He's had like millions of screennames on all the boards the administrators have thrown up for us.
Headliner, come out wherever you are! I still think you'll come back.

The good thing about that new scoreboard is that the fans get to see all the bogus pass interference penalties SV gets.

There's a grain of truth to what you say.

Are they any plans to expand/modify the football stadium? Especially on the visitor's side.

That would be a nice touch, but I have to admit it's bigger than a lot of places. We had that and the end zone full last year.
