Last year, there were some people irritated that some bands played over the other teams alma mater at the end of the game. This year it is already happening. Last week at our Lewisville game, both bands were playing at the end of the game at the same time. Wanted to ask what you think about the alma mater being played at the end of the game.

Should there be an order established amongst the teams playing that winner gets their alma mater first (or second doesnt really matter) and the other team honor this by not playing during the other teams time?

It happens - I think the band directors are just trying to get out of there - I've never believed anyone tried to be rude about it. Lufkin tries to do it as quickly as possible so the team can then break down into their positional meetings after a game.

In pre game it is practice for the visiting team to play first and then the home team. This is the way we did it and if fact we played the ET Alma mater prior to playing our own. This should be practiced by all as a matter of good sportmanship at the end of the game as long as it's started prompty by the visitors.

For as long as I can remember the alma mater has been played and then the fight song after the game. The bands have to load a lot of equipment and get back to the school and put up unis and such - as a band mom, I was in the band hall until after midnight most Friday nights...when we left, the football team and others had cleared out. Our band waits until the football team gathers in front of them and then plays - not whether or not the other band is playing...I have, truthfully, never been bothered either way.

On third thought they are usually far apart and it's never been a bother to me. Teams like San Angelo have songs that last about 15 minutes so they should always wait, until they get back to the band hall.:p

at the end of the game, I don't think it really matters. At the beginning, I think the practice of the visitors playing first is good.

I can see this but I would hate losing at home then haveing to wait for the visitor to get off the feild.

Interesting perspectives. Like I said, I saw a thread last year where someone was complaining about another teams band playing during their alma mater at the end of the game. I didnt think about it until this last game when both sides were playing.

From where you are at in the stands may dictate whether you even notice. If you are across from the other teams band or they are in the end zone, it may make a difference. Against Lewisville, the band was in the end zone. I did notice it when we played Duncanville because they had the same alma mater music, so when both were playing slightly off from each other it sounded weird.

That was a recording. Very nice of the PA folks to play that for us.

Bands have gotten worse and worse. Back in Corpus the bands didn't play at the same time. They at least had enough respect to wait for the other to finish here its like everyone plays at the same time so both bands drown each other out.

I don't get why some directors would play while the other band is playing their alma matter. We always wait and try to stay respectful of the other teams band while they are playing.

I have another question on this. Our band members, when they enter the parking lot of the school, sing the Alma Mater and then are silent until the bus stops. This is how I learned the words to the alma mater to begin with. Does anyone else do this? I know we did something similar 30 years ago so I'm thinking this is pretty common and I think it's a great thing to do - ends the evening on a nice note so to speak.

We used to sing the alma mater and then followed it up with singing the Lord's Prayer as we pulled into the school. Can you imagine doing that now - our FB team prayed before and after each game and they did public prayer on the PA system - i miss that but don't even get me going on how I feel about them taking that away - we'll be here all day!!

I think at Trinity we are a little more aware of it, I think Lineweaver's influence shows up here too. He preaches respect in all aspects of the event.

If the other band starts to play we wait. After their song is over we wait for their players to leave before the team does the HaKa.

Many times the playing of the songs at the same time are not meant to be anything antagonistic, but there is no need to give any other school / crowd a reason to think that way.
