There are lots of athletes in the Cy schools but no one seems to be fielding a really good defense except maybe Fair. Is this how those at the games are seeing it?

Must be. There is absolutely NO defense in this game. Not even on special teams. Some of these scoring drives are 3..5..6..10, or 12 plays!

Cy-Fair has a screwy defensive strategy this season. Let'em catch the ball then hopefully cause a fumble in a heavy collision. I've seen it happen a few times but my God..why let them catch the ball if you can help it?

I know RIGHT!!!:).

57-32 was the final score. Both offenses were running on jet fuel tonight and both defenses were struggling. I hate off weeks for this reason - takes a little wind out of the sails. Falls, if I know their staff, will right the ship though. They did buckle down in the 2nd half - the first half was a little scary but the offense just kept going...I was getting a whiplash with all the running back and forth. Turner looked GREAT tonight. Denzel Wells had some nice touches as did Darius Bolden. The offense is just clicking like nobodies business. Maybe they need to take the defense out to a nice dinner or something;). Really, I think it is the off week that just got them out of synch.

On the Creek side - I think other 17-5a teams need to pay attention. The QB had a broken arm (in a cast) and still did very well...whether that was because our defense was struggling (several whiffs too) or because he is pretty good. Brent Mitcham - remember that name....he may be the next Sam McGuffie and he is only a Sophomore. It will remain to be seen how he does against other teams and different defenses but he was something else tonight - had to have over 200 all purpose yards as did Shane "The Train" Turner!! Turner just rocks - that's all there is to it...end of story.

Oh, and the Homecoming Queen was gorgeous (I'm a little biased since I've known her for many years and she is a band member:D) and the band show was P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L. All in a, a very good evening for the Eagles family!!

Both defenses looked a little weak tonight but Falls had a better second half (on defense). Cy Falls's offense is looking fantastic - we always joke that they score too fast and it keeps the defense on the field too much and then, like tonight, there was 36 seconds left in the half and they had the ball and we said very nonchalantly "oh, they'll score - that's plenty of time" and they did!! They have consistently made TD scores (in all games) in quick measure - the last two games they have scored in the first minute. Each time, they look better and better. If the defense gets a little stronger, it's going to be a FUN FUN FUN season!! Heck, it has already been a blast...with a few moments of gritting teeth but not too bad:rolleyes:

Give the freakin' ball to TURNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What in the hell is wrong with this coach??

Yea this coach must not know anywhere close to the amount of football that you know. After all, he has only been there and helped them get to two straight regional finals and the state championship game and lost 10 starters and is 3-1 and put 47 n Westfield and 57 on Creek. I mean maybe you could help him out. I'm sure he would be glad for you to come up and give him some pointers. Now that would be a gReAt idea. Stop by the school this weekend and show him how to coach.

Shane had 207 rushing yards - he DID get the ball!! He had some great runs last night but there was also a lot of play in the air (see my post above regarding 668 TOTAL yards).

Coach Raffield is one of THE best head coaches in the state right now if you want my opinion. Like Bellagio said, since he has taken over the helm, they have gone to 3 straight regional championships and won one against a potent Katy team and then took them to the state game. This year, according to SO many naysayers, they had nothing and would be nothing and look at them!! That offense is potent and running on all cylinders. The defense WILL catch up because the DC just has a way with getting them up to snuff. He is that good. They aren't bad now - just started off slowly last night but the second half kicked it up a few notches. Plus the off week sometimes slows things down that first game back. Creek's offense is not bad at all so, at times they had their hands full with them too. But, Raffield and staff are doing a GREAT GREAT job and I, for one, salute them:D.

No problem. Sometimes a coach needs a pointer or two, then again this is elementary. Put the ball in the hands of the player that gives you the best opportunity to win. For the Philadelphia Eagles, it's Donovan McNabb or Bryant Westbrook. For the Cowboys, it's Terrell Owens. It's a trust thing.

Then again, I'm sure - since this coach has had great athleticism, but was embarrassed in the State Championship, he knows exactly what he's doing. He needs no more help. Cy Falls looks like a completely different team, when Turner isn't getting the rock. Why would I know that?? Because I've been to the games and seen it first hand. Against Westfield, Turner lit it up - IN THE SECOND HALF. It's almost as if he was a last resort, when he should've been the first resort. Do you think Rutgers would want to beat any team, with barely giving the rock to Ray Rice??

But hey, I'm "TGO" for nothing. Genius is a nice compliment, but I think I'm far from that. (Yes, I know you were being sarcastic.. but honestly, who really cares??) And, of the dozen teams I've seen play this year, Houston Memorial was the worst of them all... and they beat that Westfield team. If Cy Falls pounds Westfield with Turner in the 1st half, they score more than 47 pts on'em. And I don't think scoring 57 pts on Creek is going to part the clouds of football heaven. However, giving up 32 pts to Creek and 45 pts to Westfield is something that could comeback to haunt Cy Falls, when they play a stiffer defense.. and can't outscore their opponent. (See the State Championship socre of, I believe, 51-13.) But, I'm sure the coaches know this.. that's why they've made the neccessary corrections. Oh wait, no they haven't. Or maybe.. they've done, defensively, all they can do? Who truly knows?

The one thing I do know is this.. I've seen several RB's this year (Newton (SLC), Johnson (L'view), Shaw (Spring), Carrier (P-land), Snelson (P. Memorial), McGuffie (Cy Fair)) and Turner is the best, overall, package. He's explosive, has great vision, balance, toughness and straightline speed in the open field. GIVE HIM THE BALL.. PERIOD!!! It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.. which why Cy Falls waited to give him the ball in the 2nd Half vs Westfield??

Shane Turner usage...

Cy Falls' first 4 games:

Loss vs Bryan = 9 carries for 112 yds/ 1 td (2 rec for 18 yds)

Win vs Westfield = 20 carries for 181 yds/2 tds (4 rec for 67 yds/ 1 td)

Win vs Katy Taylor = 10 carries for 113 tds/1 td (0/0/0)

Win vs Cy Creek = 13 carries for 207 yds/2 tds (0/0/0)

Your best player has, only, rushed the ball 52 times, this year. (A whopping 13 carries per game. Imagine if Emmitt Smith did that with the Cowboys!) He's averaging 11.78 yds per carry. Now, imagine what his production would look like if he averaged, at least, 20-25 rushes or touched the ball 30 times (screens, passes, etc..), per game. QB-Kolby is averaging 57% passing. Imagine how much better the passing game would be helped if defenses were, legitimately, keying the run.

It's not rocket-science. It's f'n football!! GIVE TURNER THE BALL!!!

The defense was a little slow to get started last year too but once they did, they were fantastic. This defense is pretty much a completely new group and they are playing with such heart out there but missing tackles and such - some silly mental errors for the most part. That can and will be fixed and when it is, I better find some nitroglycerin pills because we will be blasting off!!:). We have Ridge and Fair for the next two games - no small task there. Both are two of the best in 17-5a and Strake is the following week - they aren't doing badly at all and. So the Eagles have their work cut out for them and the next 3 weeks should shed more light on who is in and who is on the way out. None of the teams in 17-5a should ever be taken lightly by the others in the district...Cy Creek may surprise a few too with their offense.

Our offense can easily score in less than a minute and has several times...it's just too explosive. However, I would like to see longer drives every now and then so the defense gets a little rest in between drives:rolleyes:.

Hail to GREAT ONE(in his own mind). When did the Cowboys start running the spread offense? Maybe, just maybe, Turner lit up Westfield the 2nd half because the defense was worried about covering. But since you are such an expert on the spread offense, you would know that you spread the field and throw the ball to open up running lanes. All this knashing of teeth! Quite entertaining. But some are missing the real points. It takes BOTH the running and passing to make this offense what it is. This offense may turn out to be the best in school history because of the scheme and the players.

Shane Turner is without doubt one of the top rb's in the Houston area and possibly the state this year. His style is straight ahead just as hard and fast as he can. It is really enjoyable to watch him run. He is not a power runner like Dean from Katy, nor a jiggy runner like McGuffie. He is just pure speed. The kid is outrageous! I believe he will be in the top 5 Houston area when the season is over, even with his reduced touches because of the offensive scheme. His YPC will certainly be way up there (approaching 11 ypc now!). But, I believe it is the scheme that helps him with this. The offense has the defenses so spread out he has the lanes available to exploit. The OL is really beginning to come on and open holes for him. The OL was the aspect I was concerned with coming into this year. They are holding their own now.

One person not many are talking about much yet is Kolby Gray. This kid is the real deal. His passing has been pin-point so far and improving. He is the BEST qb from Falls that I have seen. The kid has the tools. He too will be in the top of the Houston area and probably state by the end of the year. He missed almost all of the first game and 1/2 of the second and I beleive after this week he will still be close to the top 5 in Houston. I bet his numbers are better than Luck's by the end of the year. Because Gray is better than Luck? No. Because Gray has much better receivers to work with. Kolby is hitting the mark and these kids are hanging onto the ball. And then what they do with it after the catch is really fun to watch.

I have said before, this year's defense is undersized. But, they are playing with a lot of heart and are very quick. They will do ok this year and help the team win. However, right now, they need to work on their tackling drills a little harder. I saw a poor display of wrapping up this week. Got to wrap up kids.

That leads me to a very interesting hypothesis. We have all heard that defenses win games. I have always heard that and believed it. I think alot of coaches have followed this philosophy also over the years. Many have put their best athletes on the defensive side of the ball in order to achieve this. Falls' coaches seem to be putting all of their athletes on the offensive side and just scoring as fast and often as possible and having success with it. Is anyone else holding up last year's defense as a bench mark and comparing this year's defense to it? Think last year's defense, with all of it's D! talent was totally awesome? They went to state with it. It had several returners from the previous year where they went to the regional final and gave Katy's offense fits. Sounds good? Last year's defense averaged giving up the most points per game in school history, 31. 2005's defense (prelude to 2006's)? The 3rd highest average points per game. 2004? The 4th highest. All 3 years, the teams made it to at least regionals. Almost winning one, winning one and going to state. It was very interesting to look at the stats and learn this. It doesn't make sense compared to what I had been told all my life. The years that Falls had their worst defenses were the years they were successful in the playoffs. But, I do expect this year's defense to get better as the year progresses. And the offense, too. Scary thought.

Anyway, for now, I am setting the over/under on Falls' games at 90 this year.:D

Let's go have some more fun!:Music

If memory serves me correctly, Cy Falls threw the ball about 8-9 times, in the first half. Overall, both QB's threw the ball for a combined 33 times, completing 17. That's roughly 50%. Why would Westfield truly respect that? In the Bryan game (which was right before Westfield), Cy Falls threw the ball 21 times.. completing 7 passes (30%). Yup, that's the spread offense, alright! ;) Definitely gotta fear THAT kind of production!!!

To his credit, Kolby Gray was hitting on all cylinders (82%), last night. But that might be because people are expecting Turner to get the ball?? Then again, Cy Creek isn't Bryan or Westfield.

If you are talking about the Westfield game, the first half was handed to Tamez, the back up, and if memory serves me, he held his own until Kolby could come in. Kolby has been nothing short of amazing so far.

Booster - GREAT post!! As I've said, defense will get stronger (I just don't doubt they will get stronger at all!) and this team will have some serious aspirations. Looks like we can add Strake to that list of critical games this season. So the next 3 are tough games - if they come through fairly unscathed, things are looking even better. But first, Ridge is this weekend - Cy Creek was pretty good on offense, Cy Ridge is a lot better so defense has it's work cut out for them. Would love to be a bug on the wall at practice this week.

Am I missing something - do I have Colt McCoy brain damage and just am not getting it? This IS what they do - TURNER had 207 yards and GRAY had over 400 yards. I'd say both had a great night as did the receivers. That's how the spread works...lanes open up and we're off to the races. I think our passing attack has been very adequate. Our offense is very versatile with tons of weapons. Shane is doing great but you can't hand the ball to him every single play - that would be so one-dimensional.

And I'll apologize to McCoy when he apologizes for throwing a GAZILLION interceptions today and turning my burnt orange blood to black!!!

Kolby was amazing... last night. Before that.. he was 25 of 45 with 4 tds, and 15 rushes for 74 yds and 1 td. That's more good, than AMAZING. Last night was his coming out party. I assume he's been hurt (in earlier games).. as I said many posts ago, the coaching staff knows more about their team than me. My only argument was giving Turner more touches.

I've stated a million times that of the teams I've seen, this year, SLC, Cy Falls and Stratford are the best. Well, I just saw Katy, today, and they're definitely in that Top 4 list of mine. I think Cy Falls will give any team fits, with a potent offense. I've said this.

I think he's feeling better now;). Our offense is so varied that there are many participants at any time. I hear people yelling "give it to Turner" - I think I've yelled that myself. But, after last night, and if Kolby and the rest of the offense keeps this up, we will just have to sit back and enjoy when they are out there.

No, no.. I'm definitely not saying give Turner the ball every single play. But, there has been 3 games, in which Turner has touched the ball lest than 14 times. Cy Falls won 2 of those games vs lesser opponents (Cy Creek, Katy Taylor), IMO.. and lost to a tough Bryan HS team. In the 1 game that Turner touched the ball 24 times, Cy Falls upset Spring Westfield. In attending the Westfield game I thought Turner was your best player. Last night was a solid showing of how to use Turner, but he will need to touch the ball more vs better teams, much like the way he was used in the Westfield game.

I just don't think you can feed Turner the ball 13 times or less in games vs Cy Ridge (3-1) and Strake Jesuit (4-0) and hope to have the same kind of success you saw vs Katy Taylor (1-2) and Cy Creek (2-2).

I think we just need to get some more games in the book and then have the discussion. The Bryan game was a bad situation for the team. Kolby went down early first quarter and an inexperienced qb came in for his first varsity game and he had the first game jitters and was ineffective. Because of this, Bryan was keyed in on stopping the run. Shane had no where to go and I thought I saw signs of frustration on his part. So I still say it takes a good mixture of each in order to make both work. I think we have seen over the first 4 games the offense getting itself worked out. It may start to click pretty soon.:D
