View Full Version : Lufkin's QB Jeffery Claybon

I dont know why some of the panther faithful want Jeremy Nobles. Nothing against Jeremy I think he is a really good back-up, but Claybon threw the first 4 games of the season has been ahead of where his brother was in 2005. Claybon has threw for 10 TD's with just 2 pics. While running for another 2. NOt to mention the WR's have left him out to dry with atleast 10 drops so far this season and 4 of thos ecould have been TD's.
I like what I have seen from Jeffery so far. He is almost there. I know he has struggled running the speed option, but come the O-Line has not exactly been what they were suppose to be. I know there is still room for improvement but calling for Nobles over CLaybon is a laugher. Considering when we just played the last game with 1 starting WR, and the RB's fumble every 3 carries. I think Claybon put Lufkin on his back against Longview in his 1st career start. Against Kimball he may not have been spectacular, but a big reason for that was out O-Line was getting blown up every play.
I think Jeffery is doing a great Job. He does need to check down to the other WR's more but that was something that his brother struggled with early on as well. Jeffery has all the tools to be a big time QB. His numbers are pretty good right now and he has not been helped much this season. So for all the people blaming Claybon for our struggles just remeber it starts with the O-Line who has yet to live up to the hype.
I like claybon as well. He does have a habit of locking on way to early but nothing but expierence is going to get him out of the habit. He has a nice arm but not alot better than nobles, in fact I think nobles might have the better arm. What makes me like him more though is he has quicker feet and knows can really do those little last second toss passes to the RBs. I hope someone pounds it into his head though that when you are getting sacked sometimes its best to just go down, think thats where some of his fumbles come from. I think he needs to step up more as a leader in the offense though, they seem to lack direction. I can't really say that either QB exactly wows me at this point, but neither are half bad.
Big problem to me has been inconsistant receivers. They are all pretty good but from play to play they can go from a miracle catch to being unable to catch a ball in a wide open field. Been way to many passes that should have been caught for big gains that where well thrown and the recievers just couldnt catch them

I believe this goes on every where.
If you can believe it most of our fans wanted a slow, not very good passer that made a bunch of mistakes to start in front of John Childs last year. Oh brother:eek:

Im just glad we got a bye week. This will be a very physical game.

You do realize the WRs have done most of the work when it comes to those touchdowns right? Claybon is lucky to have the WRs he does...if he didn't, everyone would see who the real QUATERBACK is. Claybon tries too hard to make the perfect throw every time and never does. The WRs pick up his slack. He makes poor decisions, looks for one receiver 80% of the time, and does not have the leadership skills to lead this team. Nobles is a dimension ahead of Claybon when it comes to the run. Claybon has a very poor delivery also, and throws off his back foot way too much. At least Nobles trusts his O-line.
What is really funny is that you are blind to this. If 10 TDs from a sloppy, inconsistent quarterback is what you are looking for, I think you have found your man.

I am going to be honest with you in that I have not been impressed with Claybon as much as I thought I was going to be. Yes the numbers are pretty good but they could be much worse too. He has a lot of dropped int's also. Remember that Lufkin has faced two 4a defenses. My problem with Claybon is that he looks very uncomfortable in the pocket at times when it collapses. He freaks out and looks scared at times and is very stiff! He does not run the option well at all so far and he has a tendency not see the whole field when passing and just focuses on his primary target while throwing with a funky throwing motion.
His positives! He is a big kid with a strong arm and looks to have some potential. At times he will throw a beauty of pass and the very next pass he will miss his target by a mile. I think Green needs to take a lot of the option stuff out with Claybon because it does not seem to be his style. He is more of a pocket passer. From what I have seen Nobles looks more comfortable in the pocket, can scramble better, and throws a better pass. But I could be wrong and Claybon might become a star? His brother did not become a very good qb until late in his 1st season so who knows? We will see how he does in a tough environment against a good defense on the road next week? I just do not see how you think Nobles is that far away from Claybon? The coaching staff was not even sure until he did fairly well in the Longview game.

Mind reader.
Trust me, if they would just give Nobles a start with the FIRST TEAM OFFENSE, he would earn the starting spot outright. No doubt in my mind.

I dont see a dime's worth of difference in the two quarterbacks overall. Both have their positives and their negatives. That being said, let the junior be and by the time he is a senior he has one whole year of first team experience. I remember Jeremy Claybon saying how much slower the game seemed his second year. If Nobles is our starter, he graduates and we start over with Calybon. If Claybon remains our starter, he is all the better next year as a senior.
Besides, if Nobles is that much better at the position, Outlaw and Green must be run out of town on a rail for being stupid. HA! Trust your coaches, guys. They see these young men everyday. I think they have a handle on it.

This has played out about as expected - which is why I was a proponent for letting Nobles have every third series in non-district regardless of what is going on the scoreboard.
IMO it would have helped the situation, and is largely a moot point now.
When you give one kid a cement plan - he can get in, show his stuff and know he has a chance. Nobles was stuck in when Claybon went down against Kimball and he wasn't ready - his fault I guess, but can you blame him? He was given one pass attempt (a tough corner fade) and yanked out when it went incomplete.
IMO it could have been handled much better - but the coaches made the decision to go with Jeffrey -and they have stuck with it knowing most games this year will be tight.
It's a good problem to have, but the flip-side is you wonder what happens if Jeffrey has one or two bad games. I see him improving, but definitely has some roughness to him.

I like Nobles, but Jeffery is head and shoulders better then him. Jefffery will be our QB of the future.

Hey - look at what Patrick Creighton with Boys Sunday - and Reggie Bush did last night - dropped easy, easy TD passes.

There is no doubt the is the deepest WR corp that Lufkin has had since 2001. #15 Casey Jones the sophmore will be a star. He might brake just about every Lufkin WR record before he is threw. I know he had a tough drop fridaynight but that Kid is special.
I am glad to see we will be getting Johnson back now he might be our best pure WR well him and Davis are close, but then again Smiley just has that IT factor, no doubt he is our best playmaker, and expect Jones to be even better then Smiley when hes threw here at Lufkin.

and i think he is hoping that one wr is dez...his bro had dez...and thats what he hopes that one reciever is...i also believe he is inconsistent...some plays he hurries and doesnt let them develop and on others he lets them develop

Here we are talking about Jeffery, a 16 year old junior QB that stands in there with a new O-line, WR corp and RB's and understandably you might expect a little inconsistency to begin the year. Well excuse him. I dare say, I would like to see any of you play QB in 5A, stand in there and find a receiever in about 3 seconds before some 260 lb guy plants your butt on the turf. Sure he looks a little unsteady at times. it's a very fast game standing in that pocket.
Jeffery is doing fine, even with all of the TEAMS inconsistency, he has led Lufkin to a 4-0 record. He has 865 yards passing, 10 passing TD's, 2 rushing TD's . He also has 2 Int's and 2 fumbles through 4 games. Blue chipper Andrew Luck of Stratford has 6 TD passes and 4 INT through 4 games.

THANK YOU PackAttack2005! I am beginning to think that personal feelings are clouding the judgement of some of these guys. JC is doing fine, all things considered (inconsistent line play, RBs that fumble every other touch, numerous dropped TD passes, etc.). These preseason trials will battle test this young man and by next year he could be a QB stud. Also, sometimes you play a little bit for the future.

I'm not buying that one......At your house, with the number of injuries Lp has already suffered, not to mention that you guys just beat a very tough and ranked team. Underdogs? No way Bro.
King may be trying to sell that to the team, but I don't think anyone from L-town sees The Pack as the favorite right now.

I agree. As of now, this topic is pretty pointless. Do I think Jefferey is a bad quarterback, absolutely not. Do I think Nobles would have done us better having the starting position at the beginning, yes. That is just my honest opinion. I am not taking anything away from the kid. He has super potential and is tearing it up for us right now. I just pointed out a number of flaws I have seen since the first game and continue seeing as he keeps playing.
His numbers are stellar. STELLAR! So as long as he keeps producing, you won't catch me saying a bad word about him. But, I call 'em like I see 'em guys. And I arguing with my fellow Panthers!
And for the record, there is no argument when it comes to the RBs.

Purple Nation, what are your athletic credentials? Just checking to see if your qualified for coaching duties. Everyone is expecting way too much from this young Panther team early in the season, especially compared to the Lufkin teams of the past two years.
Longview returns far more experience than Lufkin this year. I am just amazed at the expectations of these kids from adults and how critical we can be when they have such a superlative record to start the season.
Lewis was looking like he finally made a step forward at the nac game. Was lowering his shoulder more and taking some hits instead of just falling over when someone touched him. At the Ike game he started falling over again. Heard he was sick so that might have had something to do with it. Still I don't think that he has proven hes the better RB this year. If he could get over that bad habit of running straight up and be a little more willing to just pound it through like christopherson and hilliard both do when the play calls for it he has the talent to be the top guy. Just don't think he has the skill.

I think Jeffery is a great quarterback if he wants to he could be one of the best ever at lufkin i think he is a very mature qb for example before the snap if its a pass the qb (in highschool) usually picks out his favorite route and throughs to it no matter if its open or not jeffery on the other hand he might pick out his favorite route but if its not there he looks to his second and third wr which makes him a very smart qb im sticking with jeffery Go Pack

Give me a break with that stuff PA! We are not saying we could do better ourselves? So when you are critical at times does that mean you think you can do better on the field? That does not even make sense man? Some of us were just simply saying that the senior starter might do a better job from what we have seen? We have a right to our meaningless message board opinion and we all realize it will not change things. We could definitely be wrong just like yall could be that like Claybon? Claybon has not been a bad qb this year and I think we can all agree that he has a long way to go to become a very good qb. That is usually how it works with a young qb.
The Lufkin D is what has lead the pack to a 4-0 record IMO. The offense has been anything but consistent. They just got their very first offensive td in the 1st half the other day vs a very mediocre Ike team. That should tell you something.

0808 - I've never been one to say one is clearly better - but I did back off on Jeffrey when I saw his stats - AND when considering the number of drops and fumbles this team has committed. He is WAY rougher than what I expected of him, but, for whatever reason, he's statistically better than a heck of alot of qb's.
I've said my piece - Nobles should have played a ton more up to now - not sure about now moving forward. I think both will have their hands full with some angry Lobos.

I think they both have their positives and negatives and it is about impossible to compare the two because we have not seen Nobles enough like you said. He has hardly any snaps this year when you think about it. The coaching staff will make the decision that think is best and our opinions mean nada but we still have a right to discuss them IMO. His stats are better then I thought but the stats do not always tell the truth. We will see and I obviously hope he becomes a very good qb if he is to be the panther qb of the future.

Personal feelings? I do not know either kid personally at all I am strictly making a meaningless internet opinion from what I have seen. I do not know either kid at all? I have a right to my opinion as do you and definitely do not have any type of agenda. It is simply an observation nothing more. JC might become a very good qb and I could definitely be wrong. I hope I am actually!
Was not referring to you. I think some other poster seem to have a bias based on frienship versus objectivity. My question is where have we seen enough out of Nobles to really formulate this idea that he is better than Claybon? Maybe you have. I have not. They both were disasters in the scrimmage and just because a qb looks good in practice does not mean he will perform well in a game. Even if Nobles is a shade better why give a senior the nod over a junior who will be leaps and bounds better next year because of his experience this year? I say develop the junior this year so that as a senior he has the experience.

Yeah you make a good point there but it is not fair to the senior that has been working just as hard if he is a shade better? But I understand your point. NO I have not seen enough of either of them to be sure who is better I am just going by the little I have seen. I think they are both about even but I like Nobles pass better and think he definitely runs the sprint option much much better. But who knows? I have not seen enough of either to know for sure.

Blue chipper Andrew Luck of Stratford has 6 TD passes and 4 INT through 4 games.

good post packattack, the kid is doing great, he keeps improving every week. at least he improves in the games i watch, which is all of them so far. apparently when others watch him he is not worthy to be playing. it is amazing how people view things so differently, yet physically see the same things. :D

That is just life. We all are not going to agree on everything. I hope Claybon is the next star at qb for LP and I am wrong. I just do not see it in the little time I have seen him that is all.

may be a little dissention in the Panther ranks..i believe that yall are just somewhat paranoid right now, and it's still way early...not used to hearing Lufkin fans arguing and doubting their team...that's usually us Lobo fans doing this.....

Purple Nation, what are your athletic credentials? Just checking to see if your qualified for coaching duties. Everyone is expecting way too much from this young Panther team early in the season, especially compared to the Lufkin teams of the past two years.
Longview returns far more experience than Lufkin this year. I am just amazed at the expectations of these kids from adults and how critical we can be when they have such a superlative record to start the season.
how in the world do you think that we return "more" experience than Lufkin does this season?? hell, we have 2 rookie QB's, sophomore TB, and alot of juniors that have NEVER started or seen varsity play...need to think about that last post, brother.......

he'a a former lufkin player. he now attends S.F.A. and is majoring in education with the emphasis on becoming a coach one day. all his life he planned on doing this. he would sit for hours growing up and make up and write down plays. he just likes analyzing football. read most of post and you'll see this.

Turned down a scholarship at Texas College to help raise my son, and I also attend SFA were I plan on getting my degree to become a coach. BTW SFA asked me to walk-on after I went to the walk-on meeting also decided not to.
It is no secret the TreVon has not lived up to his hype. I know he is a good RB, but even when I was in HS it was suppose to Lewis and then McFarland and now I can say that J Mac has lived up to every billing if not more. Im not talking down on TreVon but he does need to step his game up.

Doubt? No.
We just have two quarterbacks that are so good, we just can't decide who to whoop up on you guys with. ;)
