Week 2 Recap
Week two shaped up the playoff picture a bit, and provided a few surprises as well.
Best Game of Week 2
Irving MacArthur 24, Coppell 17
For the third week in a row MacArthur had a close one against a team that was not favored to win. Instead of having to make goal line stands this game, or score 27 unanswered points, it was MacArthur who had to play catchup in the 4th quarter. Coppell took a 7-0 and 10-7 lead into halftime and led much of the game. The Cowboys used two quarterbacks in the game and a backup running back to replace Emmanuel Moody. In the 4th quarter the Cardinals offense finally came to life and Matt Percle and Ron Brooks hooked up for a touchdown to tie the game at 17. The Cowboys got the ball back and marched downfield. Their field goal unit came out on the field with 32 seconds left from 41 yards out. Coppell has a great soccer team and a school full of good kickers so the kick was about to be attempted with confidence. However Ron Brooks broke free from the outside and blocked his 3rd kick in 2 games, and the Cardinals scooped the ball and scored to give the Cardinals a 24-17 win.
Other Games
LD Bell 18, Irving 15
Another great 6-5A game last week, the Blue Raiders provided the first upset of the year for the district. Jamaal Evans was missing for Irving again, so Chucky Jones took his place. The Blue Raiders shut him down. Unfortunatley for LD Bell, they reached the red zone in their first 3 possessions but only came out with 3 points. A pair of fumbles hurt the Blue Raiders. They scored in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-7 advantage at the half. Irving came out firing and scored on their first possession of the 2nd half and Adron Tennell returned the blocked extra point into the end zone for 2 points to put Irving up 15-10. The Blue Raiders turned the ball over in their next 3 series, a fumble and 2 interceptions. However they did not give up, and the defense kept them in the game. An injured Joe Mauro led the Blue Raiders down field and scored, plus Ryan Stankus caught the 2 point conversion for the 18-15 lead. The defense for Bell provided 2 defensive stops to put the game away.
Trinity 48, Nimitz 21
Having to play catch up for the first time after careless play in the 1st quarter, the Trojans answered and put the game away early yet again. Trojans reserves entered the game in the 2nd half. For the 2nd week in a row Nimitz could not hold onto an early 1st quarter lead. David Watkins and Dmitri Nance once again gained over 150 yards rushing.
South Grand Prairie 45, Grand Prairie 6
The Warriors of SGP took a 14-0 lead early into the game. Aided by 4 interceptions from the stingly Warrior Defense and sloppy play from Grand Prairie, it was no surprise this game was over by halftime in the battle of Grand Prairie. The Gophers only score came on a blocked kick. Grand Prairie lost its 14th straight game.
Offensive Player of the Week
Joe Mauro, LD Bell - Joe injured his ankle and had to sit out for 3 plays in the winding minutes of the 4th quarter. However he shook it off and led the Blue Raiders downfield to the end zone and completed a 2 point conversion pass to give the Blue Raiders the lead for good. He was 9 of 15 for 144 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week
Ron Brooks, Irving MacArthur - Ron blocked his 3rd kick in 2 games, which was returned for a touchdown to give the Cardinals the win in a close game against Coppell. He also scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter on offense.

The Vikings face a virtual playoff-elimination game against Coppell Thursday for being unable to hold early leads.
Game of the Week
#5 Irving(4-1, 1-1) [neutral] #3 Irving MacArthur(5-0, 2-0) @ Irving Schools Stadium, 7:30 (Last Season: 27-20 MacArthur)
Once again, the question for Irving will be whether or not Jamaal Evans plays. His backup, Chucky Jones, had a mediocre game last Thursday against Bell and will need to kick it into a higher gear if Evans sits again. Last year's contest was a close one and it figures to be that way again based on how the Cardinals have played their past 4 games. Both teams have work to do if they want to grab a playoff spot. The loser of this game, if they still make the playoffs, will most likely face SLC in the first round of the playoffs given SLC goes Divison II. Both teams still have Trinity on the schedule.
Other Games
#6 Coppell(1-4, 0-2) @ #7 Irving Nimitz(3-2, 0-2) @ Irving Schools Stadium, 7:00 Thursday (Last Season: 38-35 Coppell)
A virtual playoff elimination game, the loser of this game is eliminated from the playoffs. Both teams lost a pair of heart breakers last week. Expect a quick game because both teams like to utilize the power running game. Another running back showdown, this time Emmanuel Moody vs. David Watkins. Expect the team with the most rushing yards to pull away from this game.
#2 SGP(5-0, 2-0) @ #4 LD Bell(2-3, 1-1) @ Pennington Field, 7:30 (Last Season: 41-11 SGP)
The Blue Raiders, for the 4th week in a row, have to face an undefeated team. The Blue Raiders, for the 2nd year in a row, come into the game 2-3, 1-1, and coming off a win against Irving. How will it turn out this time? The SGP defense forced turnovers from the Blue Raiders last year to put the game away at halftime. This year, expect a defensive show, featuring two of the district's top defenses. SGP is allowing only 2 touchdowns a game, and Bell, after a 41 point allowance in their opener, is only allowing 16 points per game. Each score in this game is crucial.
#1 Trinity(5-0, 2-0) @ #8 Grand Prairie(0-5, 0-2) @ Gopher Bowl, 7:30 (Last Season: 59-6 Trinity)
Expect, once again, for Trinity to be rolling out their reserves at halftime. Shouldn't be a contest in any way, and Trinity's last chance to tune up for the H-E-B battle against Bell and their last 3 games against the top 6-5A teams.
