ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting the cheating incident with New England is the "tip of the iceberg".

He gave some incredible info. on M&M this morning - jammed headsets, constantly filming the other team, miked interior linemen. Couldn't believe how he was going off on NE - with lots of support on his reasoning.

He concluded this deal is like "Watergate" - the foiled break-in was just the beginning.

I guess it would have been incredibly nieve to think football was any different than baseball when it comes to cheating. Heck, some of the stuff I used to see and hear about in little league blew my mind...the lengths some parents would go to in order to win.

Well, how is it different than watching game film of a future opponent? I don't know exactly what was done specifically to steal signs or whatever, but you would think that watching a 3 hour film would give any decent coaching staff a fair idea of what the strength, weaknesses and tendencies of a particular team is. Don't ESPN analysts even use a telestrator and aerial shots to demonstrate how plays develop for certain teams?

People are over reacting here. It's football, not cricket. It's not meant to be a "gentleman's" game.

"Jolly good shot, old boy."

Cavdad, the problem is that they had sent an assistant coach over to the Jets' sideline to try and film the signals. It's roughly equivalent to dressing someone up in a Jets' polo shirt and try to sneak him into a time-out huddle.

At first I was with you, until I found out that they broke league rules by filming in unauthorized locations. If they had filmed from their authorized spot, and chose to zoom in on the assistant coach and decipher his signals, no problem. But they didn't, they sent someone over to the other teams' sideline with a hidden video camera. That's a problem...it's cheating, its unsportsmanlike.

You're not supposed to be taping signals regardless of where you are standing on the field. Taping the game and trying to figure out the tendancies of a team is one thing, but stealing signs through video is cheating no matter what. If the Pats (or other teams for that matter) have been doing this for years, how hard would it be for them to stand on the other sideline and adjust their offensive play calling based on the signals that are being sent in?

Still, it's not like Bellichek (sp?) or the Patriots are really going to miss the money they were fined. $500, 000 is a perfectly legitimate fine, IMO.

Well if anything, it was a stupid move. But it is no more unsportsmanlike or dishonest than filming the signals with a powerful zoom camera from the other side of the field. The intent is still the same. I guess they deserve what they get for being so stupid. I really do not think it was necessary for them to go to those extremes. But morally speaking they're no different to other NFL teams. But what do I care. I gave up on pro sports years ago. Nothing surprises me now.

Today, I heard the cheating compared to putting a camera in the opposing teams dugout to steal signals instead of a guy on second base trying to steal signals.

Big difference.
