I am joining the club..after watching the story of the Carroll /MNW game unfold, I have to join the chorus of "it's too much". I can't wait to get this "show" behind us and get back to the real games against Rockwall, etc. This board is a fairly closed society, in other words, what we argue about on here is limited to a relatively small audience. What has gone on in the media, as a run-up to this game is too much for High School athletics. To make a public spectacle of the 2 schools/communities involved is beyond sensationalism in the high school environment. Our kids grow up fast enough...we don't need Paris Hilton teaching our girls how to dress/act and we don't need Michael Vick / Bill Belachek teaching our young men how to be responsible adults. That is what all of this hoopla around this game is doing...making a mockery of a high school game that is the last real bastion of innocence for our kids...Coach Bob Ledbetter, Carroll's legendary former HC, who started "the tradition" said it best when I asked him about the first televised game against Denton Ryan in 05..."It's a circus".....:o Nuff said...all IMO.

Agreed - it's like a clash of two worlds to some folks. Let's get it on - and get on with life. They're kids. I will guarantee you these kids would probably be buds if you sent them off to camp together for a week. We're not that much different - particularly HS kids.

As a Judson Rocket, I would be lying if I said I wasn't hoping that SLC really takes it to MNW. I've always liked SLC dating back to their 3A title runs in the late 80's/early 90's. That said, it really will be nice to get this thing behind us. It really is a circus, and it can be a real distraction from the real task at hand, which is, for SLC, getting a good rhythm going that facilitates a "four-peat," or at least something that comes close to it. It's for these reasons that I'm not all that fond of these invitational "kickoff classics" at the HS level to start the season. It's supposed to be a game with an educational component. It's not supposed to be a circus that, while nevertheless piquing the interest of "the fan," is driven by a desire to make some money for sponsors and TV and other media. It's getting to be too much.

I vote this as drgnbkr's best post ever. The only thing you left out was "brang it". BTW, I couldn't agree more with what you said. Win or lose, Sunday morning will be a relief from all this madness. :puke

Sometimes I almost miss the days of waking up on Saturday morning to read the paper for all the scores from around the state...I know it's great now to have instant gratifacation on this fine board and in other ways, but I almost miss the old days..it's too much...I guess I'm just in a nostalgic mood with all that has gone on...:(

'backer,

Thanx for reminding us of the way it should be.

These kids grow up fast enough. National TV for a stinkin' high school game??

WE are getting WAY TOO full of ourselves. We should concentrate on teaching our kids basic values of life, like our parents did. All this hype is getting sooooo ridiculous.

Thanx again for the reminder.

Now . . . . . . GO KICK THE CRAP OUT OF MIAMI ! Oooops! :o

When Lufkin-Longview moved it's game last year to Thursday for national TV - I asked on our local forum "what happened to Friday night Lights?"

Nobody shared my sentiments, and they told me to throw away my leather helmet. Sigh.

Why does the UIL prevent Friday telecasts?

Good luck SLC. I hope y'all win big. I wish, though, that the best teams in Texas would just play Texas teams. I'm not a fan of these interstate matches.

For all the reasons I've been whining about above...it takes interest away from all the games going on all over the state on Friday Nights...

I was just thinking that same thing the other day. We would go to the game, then go home change out of our uniforms and go meet friends either at the Victory Dance or at the pizza parlor - it was so freaking innocent compared to today! We had a dance after EVERY game...not just Homecoming. Speaking of HC - it was a very low level affair - everyone wore regular school clothes and even our queen nominees just wore church type dresses...no sequins or long gowns. The mums were real and you had to smell them all day!

The next morning after games, I would get the paper and go straight to the football section and see how our rivals did. You couldn't even go online to check scores nor did the news report it all the time. We certainly didn't have HSSL or High School Scoreboard!! These days, I'm up until 3:00 am on Fridays just chatting and watching rewinds. At the same time, the kids were WAY more humble back then. There was not the cockiness that is so pervasive now. It is a new world and a much smaller, sophisticated world but I do miss those times some days. Now, would I give up the websites, the football shows, the instant gratification - knowing what I now know - no I wouldn't but I wish these kids could experience that old feeling just once to have the perspective we have.

And playing an afternoon game was out of the realm of possibilities - there were NO day games. And back then Spring Branch was the ruling district in the area and Cy Fair ISD had 2 schools...one which was brand new (Jersey Village) and Katy only had one and was 3 or 4a. Pearland was in the country and the Woodlands hadn't even been started. We did play Conroe and that one 300 lb lineman they had ("corn fed country boy" is what my dad used to call those types - now there is an air up steroid suspicion when they are that big)

Add me to the list as well...I know this game has created a freenzy of excitement for the high school football fanatic, but it's become "a circus" for sure. I kind of hope we keep it in Texas from now on. Although a game with Jenks or something like that would be fun. A high school version of a Red River shoot out. If not, I say lets just keep it at home. I certainly hope the Dragons take care of business but all I really want is to leave saturday with
no injury's. It would a real bummer to have someone hurt in a game like this.

I just hope with all the hoopla and these kids getting "into the zone" for this game, that there aren't any altercations on the field or such thing...I hope it's a good clean game...don't want to see dirty on national TV;) .

Too much hoopla??? I think YOU think there's too much hoopla because you're zeroing in on all the coverage. Personally, I was a bit shocked to see in today's Dallas Morning News that they actually have the Plano v. Carter game ranked higher in importance than the SLC v. MNW game. Go figure that!

Seeing as I'm out of state and want to see the game... national tv broadcast is not too much to ask! If people want to see the game, let them see it! they show little league for 2 weeks a year and can't show hs football??

I think it's too much if you make it too much. I have a feeling the players are getting ready- not reading every article and forum posting! We make it too much .

When DLS backed out, I was hoping for SLC vs Longview. However, since MNW was the new team, I view it as a chance for SLC to see how they measure up to a team loaded with D1 talent.

I agree. I have a feeling a couple of colleges are going to be second guessing a pick or two, and start looking at some Texas boys.

Welcome to the club guy. This is where I've been for some time now. Let's just get this overhyped thing over with and get back to Friday night football that really matters. Well, I guess we have to go through one of those evil Thursday night varsity games first. One lesson here: never let some damn marketing companies schedule an opponent for you.

I've been sick of this game almost from the moment it was scheduled. By it's very nature, you knew it would be so overhyped that even the best fans would cringe at the very mention of SLC & MNW before it was over. Thank God the :Censor: circus will be over 36 hrs. from now...........

I somewhat disagree. It is a circus but this type of matchup is once in a lifetime for SLC and MNW. This is GOLD for high school football fanatics. I would be disappointed if there was not much made of the game. It's all about competition. The kids will remember this game for the rest of their lives.

So I was out to lunch from work and I'm already seeing NW folks around this area. The had their flags and cars decorated. Some of their kids looked like players, I felt like saying "I hope y'all did your homework for this game", but then I decided to keep it classy and just give them a warm welcome to our state. Anyways, I don't have ESPNU on my dishnet service, anyone around the DFW metro know where to catch the game on tv? (bar, etc), can I still purchase a ticket at the gate and get in? If so, how much are they going for? I'm from Katy but this is everything that Texas HS Football stands for, so I'm rooting for SLC this time, SLC you better represent!

How about them Spartans? It's about time that program came back around. Did you play with Craig James? I'm a former Spartan too (class of '98), we had what was supposed to be the most talented team ever in Stratford history, but it was a dissapointment, between injuries and bad coaching, we never achieved our potential. Kind of weird how every 9-10 years, a good Stratford team always comes around. 1978 (State champs), 1987 (State Runner Up), 1997 (Greatest team that never was), 2006 (First playoff appereance since 1993, 1 point loss to the state runner up), 2007 (?).

Head to any sportsbar. While you will certainly have some competition for the tubes with the college games going, not to mention the Trinity - Permian match at the same time, every sportsbar will have access to ESPNU. I would guess there will be around 10,000 seats available at the gate.
