Herbstreit '08 lures champs

Cincy Enquirer paper.
Seven-time Missouri state champion Rockhurst, four-time Indiana champion Warren Central and three-time Florida champ St. Thomas Aquinas are among teams verbally committed to the 2008 Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge high school football event.
Jim Herbstreit, father of event founder Kirk Herbstreit and matchmaker for the games, said Wednesday that Cincinnati powers St. Xavier, Colerain, Elder and Moeller also tentatively have agreed to play in the September 2008 event. Details are being arranged.
The event this year was held on Labor Day weekend at two venues, UC's Nippert Stadium and Canton's Fawcett Stadium.
Next year's Herbstreit challenge will be the fourth annual.
Jim Herbstreit, 68, a former star athlete at Reading High School and Ohio State defensive back/halfback who now lives in Chagrin Falls near Cleveland, said he enjoys helping his son, Kirk, an ESPN analyst and former Ohio State quarterback.
"One of the things I told Kirk when he was 10 or 12 years old was, wouldn't it be fun to bring in some hot-shot national teams to face our Ohio teams?" Jim Herbstreit said. "It's been great to see it grow."
Jim Herbstreit said his wish list includes several teams that are or have been national Top 25 contenders recently - Mater Dei (Calif.), Katy (Texas), John Curtis (La.), South Panola (Miss.), Prattville (Ala.), Maryville (Tenn.) and Joliet (Ill.) Catholic.
"We should know more in the next few weeks," Herbstreit said. "We are still in conversations with a lot of schools."
Huber Heights Wayne and Indianapolis Cathedral look probable for 2008, Herbstreit said. For the Canton venue, Canton McKinley is committed, with Massillon, Warren Harding, Youngstown Mooney, St. Ignatius, Solon and Mentor among those on the potential list. Several other Cincinnati-area teams are also candidates, but Herbstreit did not want to reveal names.

Glad to see Katy making that list. With the way HS is becoming more national every year, the best teams in Texas may need to make a little road trip through a few states and end any speculation as to who is the best.
OR
Or, we could all just keep playing in our own states, the way it was intended to be. I don't mind the occasional inter-state game here and there, but I seriously hope HS football doesn't start turning into the barnstorming gimmick some HS basketball teams have turned into.
I'm still convinced Texas has nothing to prove as far as who is the best, the 49 other states just need to step their game up a bit (or a lot, depending)

Who in Texas this year is considered a top #25 (5A) team that will make a strong playoff push that will have several returning starters next year (let's just say about 9 or so) and also have a Junior QB & RB this year starting for them ?

Exactly. Though I must say I would be down for at least one out of state game for Katy. Our boys have proven plenty in Texas, so I wouldn't mind them being a representative for the state. But I would hate for them to make a habit out of it...then they become more of a gimmick and a show than an actual team.

Katy is always a State power seems like. I would also like to see them go on the road sometime and test the waters.
This years team would of been very nice to see at the Herbie games.
But, next years katy team will have to replace a ton of SEniors leadership from this team. I think early September they might have some growing pains next year (2008).

Carroll will return alot of talent, just flip flop the circumstances of this year. They'll have alot of defensive experience and a handful of starters on the O. They won't go though. I wish Katy could have been invited/gone this year, too. Excellent squad.

They need to wise up with this event. Cut back on the teams by a few & have this thing at one facility. Have a featured kick off game on Friday, a quadruple header on Sat & a marquee game on Sunday. The split venues hurts the coverage, attendance & profitability.

Katy was invited this year...but chose to decline.....It was our respnsibility to find a replacement game for klein and coach opted not to do that to the klein staff. We had a hard enough time filling our predistrict schedule. It was a last minute invite(july)... so not much time left to work with. We felt that it wasnt the right thing to do to Klein.

A few teams that might yield solid teams, next year,... Cedar Hill, Cy Ridge, Plano, Cy Falls, Garland and South Garland.

TGO, Plano interest me a lot as a Texas team for next year. I think they'll be pretty solid this year and they have several underclass kids and they also have a Junior QB and RB starting for them this year.
South Garland is losing some pretty strong Seniors this year and they'll have to replace a pretty darn good QB.
I agree with Cy-Ridge also. They'll have Russell Shepard and several strong Juniors coming back. I think they might have a legit Top 10 Texas team next year.
I dont think Katy, SLC, Trinity are going to be heading to Ohio anytime soon. I would like to maybe see Plano next year. I think they would be a good representive team from Texas in Ohio.

Makes complete sense but it would have been sweet to see the Tigers up there this year. I have no doubt, after watching several of the games, that Katy would have been the most impressive squad there.
Katy will be YOUNG next year.

Speaking of Ohio football... I'm about to watch Colerain play some team named Mason. It looks to be a bloodbath.

My parents both went there and my Dad played football with Chris Spielman there. I really would like to See Massillon vs. SLC even though I know SLC would own them.

I'm sure the Mason team is a much better team than the (4-5) Tyler Lee team was couple of years ago.;)
