As I predicted, the game was very short - 6 possesions for each team, three per half. This limited both Geno's and Gilmer's carries (12 and 15 respectively.) and my belief that Geno would break a couple of long runs for scores in the fourth quarter due to a tired Pearland defense. Pearland did great job of keeping Geno from breaking the long run for the touchdown - his one true opportunity he stumbled in open field and was unable to maintain his balance. But the biggest key to the game had to be the dominate O-line play demonstrated by Pearland. It was evident from the very first Pearland offensive play that it would be a long night for Lake's D-line and linebackers. The fact that Lake's defense was able to hold Pearland to 14 pts can be attributed to inspired defensive play and a timely fumble and holding call by Pearland. Also, props also has to be given to Pearlands defense - even though Lake averaged nearly 50 yards per drive - Pearlands defense would tighten in the red-zone and force a field goal attempt or make an interception to stop the drive.

Lake's Offense:
Lake effectively moved the ball between the 20's but was unable to make the plays to put points on the board. Lake's effectiveness in the red-zone must improve. Efficiency in the red-zone cost Lake victories against two teams that they outplayed (Laporte, Katy,) and one that was very close (Pearland.) Lake's offense also played without its best linemen (Brad Paul) who move to defense this week to help an injury depleted defensive front and to add size to the D- line in attempt to somehow matchup against Pearland's O-line. This is game where Lake needed its best offensive linemen. Lake also had a chance to hit a couple deepballs but was unable to hook up. I thought Lake needed and would hit a couple of big passes for scores. QB Gilmer throws a nice deep pass but for two games in row has been unable to connect on the long bomb. With only 6 possesions in the entire game - every drive is monumentally important - which means the few mistakes or missed opportunities made during this game became very big. Lake's offense will have better nights in the future.

Lake's Defense:
Despite being outmanned by the Pearland's offensive line - Lakes defense played smart and inspired and gave the team a chance to win the game. Hopefully Lake will get back to full strength and no longer need to shift player's around in the future. Continue to play with this type of effort and the team will be rewarded with victories.

Hopefully, Lake will keep their focus and intensity and use the lessons taught to them in these very close losses to improve and despite there first half of the season record - prove they are good football team.

This was a game Lake could, woulda, shoulda won. Actually so were the La Porte and Katy Taylor games. Pearland I'm not taking anything away from you that is a fine program you have over there and that Foster kid, HOLY GOD wasn't this kid an all-stater as a SOPHOMORE! Great program there, I'm going to be paying attention to this rivalry until I die I promise that.
Anyways Lake could have one of the best programs in the area if it weren't for 5 key factors.
Inexperince, lack of enthusiam, poor calls, poor kicking, and Gilmer.
The majority of that Semi-final team from last year went on to college. (side note Friday was supposed to be our homecoming but because of the hurricane and the rescheduling we had a ton of last years seniors there, including some football players and Elrick Jones) This years team is comprised of some seniors and a talented but undersized and unenthustiastic junior class.
For some reason Aduddle has dropped the ball this year, he won the Chronicle's Coach of the Year award last year, but this year the calls have been not up to par. Dumb runs up the middle when the outside is the way to go, leaving a certain kicker in to long, and punting the ball with about 1:30 to go against Katy Taylor only down by a touchdown.
Our two biggest problems individually are QB and i hate to say it but kicker.
let me explain kicker first
We started the year with i think 3 kickers, Bruno Lesage (a very old very good friend of mine) Dave Anderson and Ken Tabata. I've seen Lesage attempt a kick and he missed the EP I haven't seen him since. Dave was a phenomenal distance kicker and is big enough to acually tackle if needed, he left CL and went to a smaller private school that dosen't have a team. Our primary kicker is Ken Tabata, who sometimes hits EP's, never hits FG's, and has an amazing 5 COUNT EM 5 blocked punts so far this year. How did La Porte come back from a nearly 30 point deficit? 1 missed field goal, i missed extra point, and 3 blocked punts. He lines up about 4 yards from the line, isn't prepared to play the game of football, and dosen't even attempt to tackle when the returned breaks lose.
FINALLY we get to Gilmer
Personally I think Aduddle is trying to mold Gilmer into another Oswald, which isn't going to happen. Gilmer can pass and he has a receiver threat in Vincent Brooks thety just don't pass enough for it to be effective. Gilmer is far to clumsy and slow for the option and for some reason beilives he can go Scott Oswald and take the ball himself up the middle for a nice gain (he can't).

Frankly after listing all that off I'm amazed were not 0-5 and people can talk about us as a solid team.

Ok, so what can be done about this. Simple really
#1 find some way to fire up the juniors (I have no explinations for this one)
#2 Aduddle just needs to realize this isn't last years team and he can't call the same plays he did last year and expect the same results.
#3 Open mass tryouts for anyone in the school to see who can be the next kicker, to ensure they find a kicker who won't choke in front of a crowd, hold the tryouts in front of an audience in district stadium.
#4 Replace Gilmer with Cole Mueller. Gilmer has had his chance and has shown he can't live up to the starting QB position. Cole is a QB who is much more suited for the option offense (fast and dosen't fumble :) ) and has proven he can be good. He was put in once during the Baytown Game and I think he had a 30 yard run (one of those up the middle types to) and the falcons scored on his drive.

Wow that was a long entry. Took me nearly 30 minutes to write. Enjoy
