I tried to tell some of yall that Lane is the backbone of the Aggies. I also think Lane and Charles(UT) are about equal now. Charles seems to just keep getting worse after his breakout freshmen year. But on being a Longhorn fan I just hope we get it together because OU looked great today and The way our offense has been strugging, but our D is way better then the canes.

Lane 23-121-4
Goodson 23-69-0
McGee 21-124-?

Oh yeah was anybody else impressed with Orgeon they looked really good or is Mich. that bad.

The way that OU is playing doesn't bode well for the rest of the Big 12.

i wonder if miama is as bad as they looked yesterday? it isn't often you see the u players a step (or three) slow. they gave a good effort but didn't have the sticks to play in that knife fight. sos could theoretically hurt ou if the teams ahead of them continue to win. conference teams are going to have to help them by winning a few big games somewhere. tu's win kast night while not pretty, was against a highly ranked opponent.

I take your point, but OU is putting up a lot of points early in the season. A&M, Michigan, & tu would love to be winning by those kinds of margins at this point.

A non-con road game is much different than a conference road game. When Tech or A&M or Nebraska play at Owen Field, they're half-way used to it, with some fans on their side. Miami was totally out of their element, and it's not like the Hurricane squads of even 5 or 10 years ago. they would have played in Greenland and kicked the other team's behind, but I think Miami has dropped quite a bit.

Just ask yourself how many of those kids playing for USF against Auburn last night traditionally would have been hurricanes? That's just one example.

Rice, this week... well i hope we still get some good work in, because the Okie Lite game is huge for us! The offense came back to earth a little, and i want to see them face some pressure and different looks from an aggressive D. That may not happen until Stillwater...

Tech hasn't "overacheived" by beating A&M for at least the past 5 years, probably 8 or so. They've beat A&M's backside, and been a better team most of those years to boot. Speed and moves don't break tackles. Speed and moves don't pick up 4th and 1. Lane is not and never will be an every down back, but he is the best situational back in the nation. Anybody who can spend most of his college career grossly overweight and running behind a marginal O-line and still pick up over 4.5 ypc and 33 TDs in 318 carries is pretty damn good.

I'd take Charles over Lane. Charles is a victim of Texas' system. The Longhorn offense isn't diverse enough in the ground game. It works when you have a very talented runner at QB, but with Colt McCoy the shotgun running stuff just isn't going to be that effective.

Charles is lucky the coaches' inexplicable decision to have him carry the ball to run out the second quarter against TCU didn't end his season.

Texas will have a long and painful experience against OU unless the offense can improve on their second half performance against TCU and unless Mack finally starts the right players in the secondary.

The jury is still very much out on Jamaal, while J-train etched another piece of history for himself Saturday as a true warrior.

Did you not see his carry in the third OT on 3rd and 3? He gets slowed down, then gets hit in the mouth head on by FS's best lb. He somehow absorbs that wicked blow, re-squares his shoulders, churns his feet, slips to the side of the lb, and squirms over the first down line. The td and 2 pointer were a given at that point a couple of plays later.

And, all this in brutal conditions.

Charles is a talent that has simply not proven to be able to carry the rock 20 times a game and get another 7 or 8 touches on passes. Maybe that's not totally his fault, but I personally still want to see Vondrell get a fair chance.

so is this a revote on the never high coaching iq from the tu offensive coaching? i thought sure i remembered you and several other orangeaid drinkers making the inane statement that they (or hoped they)learned how to coach(in conjunction with vy's soph and jr years) and it would carry over to later years. i'm not here to say i told you no, but it seems the davis brain trust is as sharp as ever, and there isn't relief(vy2) in sight.
since when does mack make the game day decisions. he's a freaking recruiter(and a danged good one too). the headset is plugged into his back pocket, or his ipod.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been consistently against Greg Davis' system. Even when Vince was on campus, I thought there was a lot more UT could do with him that they weren't (moving him out of pocket more- bootlegs, sprint outs, speed option, etc.). I didn't think they did a good enough job in getting Vince in situations where he could reall exploit all spaces of the field.

I think what Mack has improved since VY is his game management. I think his attitude and approach to games is clearly different than it was pre-Vince. However, I think probably one of his greatest strengths is also proving to be a weakness...loyalty. Greg Davis was the best man at his wedding, and the two have a close personal relationship away from football which all but guarantees Davis' job as long as Mack is the head coach.

Also, Mack also appears to become extremely attached to seniors when younger players may clearly be the better option. The prime example this year is the cornerback position. He is electing to start Ryan Palmer and Brandon Foster over Chykie Brown and Deon Beasley. Brown and Beasley are the two most talented DBs on the team. Foster and Palmer are seniors, but have rarely played significant downs on defense in all of their time on campus. I'm thinking there is a reason for that, but they seem immovable on the depth chart this year.

You say that as if Lane benefits from the offensive(pun intended) geniuses behind A&M's scheme.

If running behind 2 or 3 future NFLers is a detriment to Charles' performance, then what would he ever do if he had fewer NFL caliber linemen, say if he played for the Texans?

It doesn't take a quantum physics degree to figure out you run a "260" pound tailback between the tackles. Lane will be a goalline specialist at best in the NFL unless he really and truthfully whips himself into shape (legit, well distributed and muscular 260). He could be a monster if he ever does that.

Charles is just a little bit more dynamic than that. Charles is much more well suited for a pro style attack than he is for what Texas runs. Charles needs to be attacking the LOS on handoff as opposed to the east/west movements forced by running from the gun on every play.

I was mainly talking at the college level, but used the NFL lineman analogy to mention the talent level of UT's line. True, lane isn't as good on his feet as the Bus was, especially when overloaded.

I'm just not impressed with Charles. Frankly, I thought he'd do more in college. Yeah he has speed, but so do a lot of guys that underachieve or can't cut it in football. You think he's been held back, and I think he's had every advantage available.

I'd be very interested to know what those advantages are. He ran behind pro talent in fresh and soph years, but this year I see maybe two legit pro prospects on the starting OL (one is a true freshman, Tray Allen).

Charles was nagged by injuries most of last year in addition to sharing the workload with Selvin Young. I think those who watch Texas closely would tell you Charles should have been the undisputed man last year, which he was not for some reason but probably goes back to what I said above in regard to Mack and seniors.

He's definitely been Texas' best player on offense so far this year.

how many other lines have 2 NFL prospects?

As far as the loyalty thing, try watching Graham Harrell be indecisive and waste a season, and then tell me your coach is too loyal. I actually respect these guys( leach and Mack(:puke )) for sticking by guys that have contributed to the program. I believe it repays them over and over. As far as mack is concerned, maybe he never wants to repeat the Simms-Applewhite fiasco? I see the loyalty as building respect within the program. Sometimes we fans don't neccessarily like it, but we've seen the alternative scenario blow up too.

I won't say I'd take the UTEP roster over Miami, but I will say having a 4-star transfer (Lorne Sam) and 5-star transfer (Fred Rouse) come to UTEP from Florida State makes them a little better than the normal C-USA team, not to mention having a BCS-quality coach.

UTEP made the Tech game their Super Bowl last year. The fans were hostile and ready months before the game.

TCU made the Tech game their Super Bowl and sold out the stadium for the first time in 22 years.

I don't know if SMU made the Tech game the Super Bowl last year, but I bet they did and they sure did this year.

I love the fact that Tech plays the Texas teams from C-USA and New Mexico. They're some of the better of the non-BCS teams and they play with added fervor because they're non-BCS teams from Texas playing Tech. All non-BCS teams want to beat BCS schools, but the kids from Texas want to REALLY beat the BCS schools from this state that didn't want them.

The Tech offense was unstoppable almost the whole game vs. UTEP. Amendola fumbled a lateral, Harrell got pressured enough once that he fumbled, and the INT was a defensive interference call that wasn't called.

It sure looked like the officials were on the take in that UTEP game. I'm not saying they were trying to make Tech lose, but it sure looks like they didn't want them to cover the point spread. With Tech holding a 14 point lead in the 4th, I saw the refs call incomplete passes on 2nd and 3rd down (Back to back plays) for UTEP on their own side of the 50 that were really catches and fumbles that Tech recovered. They were going to review one of the calls and then came back and said you can't review an incomplete pass. I hollered they reviewed an incomplete pass in the Texas game last year, so I'm calling BS. BTW, that Tech incomplete pass vs. Texas was total garbage, but it was along the Texas sideline where our boy the UT socialite was working and we saw his work spotting the ball all game.

It's so hard to win non-conference road games because you have to fight the refs trying to help their conference and beat the other team at home and their environment. In conference play, you need to play well to get the refs help in a pinch. The only way Tech will ever hope to get a fair shake with refs vs. Texas is to have a season where they're better than Texas. That's just how it looks to me. The Big 12 wants to have top teams and doesn't like the appple cart to be upset. They don't want Texas and Oklahoma losing games to people like Tech and Kansas if they aren't top teams, too.

I agree Tech is better, but Slorch is referring to the attitude that some A&M fans have about Tech.

A&M is not a Tech Super Bowl. They're just another name in the Big 12 that they want to beat. They want to beat K-State, Nebraska, OU, and Texas, too. You can only have 1 Super Bowl each year and the Big 12 doesn't allow teams like Tech to single 1 team out.

I'd take a couple of their guys on O-Line to block for Harrell and Co.

Mr Debbie Cake is their problem. He still thinks a FG is worth 5 points.
I like our guys on the line. Last year, I would've taken a few Aggies, but I'm not ready to say that this year.

so is this a revote on the never high coaching iq from the tu offensive coaching? i thought sure i remembered you and several other orangeaid drinkers making the inane statement that they (or hoped they)learned how to coach(in conjunction with vy's soph and jr years) and it would carry over to later years. i'm not here to say i told you no, but it seems the davis brain trust is as sharp as ever, and there isn't relief(vy2) in sight.
since when does mack make the game day decisions. he's a freaking recruiter(and a danged good one too). the headset is plugged into his back pocket, or his ipod.
Yeah, when I've talked about how good (Or lack thereof) of a coach Mack is, UT fans tell me he lets the assistants and coordinators handle the X's and O's.

I'm STILL waiting for Mack to show me he can get his team to play better than they are the day they step on campus. The UT staff isn't bad and they don't do stupid stuff like Fran's crew, but I've never seen where they take mediocre talent (They never have it) and make it very good or very good talent and make it truly great (Not counting the VY years).

LOL - I do often wonder. Maybe he's listening to Tony Robbins - keeping that positive mental attitude regardless. He better get some fresh material for the RSS - it could be a long day.
I want to puke everytime Mack speaks. I know he's a nice guy, but I get tired of the crap he says.

"Our fanbase is one of the few out there that's on suicide watch after a win."

Maybe it's because your sorry team can't win big games in most years, you lose games you should never lose, and play like crap in a few others each year.

I get tired of his drivel about how mean the fans are. They aren't mean enough considering you get extensions. I'm a Tech fan and love Mack at UT, but I've said before that I'd be calling for his firing everyday if I was a Texas fan. I'd rather have the Pirate who would gripe about bad play in a 30 point win. Forget Mack and his sunshine pumping and all the world is great crap.

lonny23

I'm thinking there is a reason for that, but they seem immovable on the depth chart this year.People say the same thing about Leach and Setencich and how Lyle plays the vets. Lyle did start Marlon Williams at LB against UTEP, though. Early in the year, Leach has taken TO's because of bad defensive play and in fall camp he showed he cared about what they were doing out there. I think Leach might cut the cord on Lyle if the D doesn't perform this year.

It's coaching. If you have a talented player, you get the ball in their hands. They aren't great as decoys even though they open the field for others. Everybody and their uncle wanted to see how Crabtree would look for Tech. Despite that, Leach got him 8 catches in the first half of college football he ever played. He's got 5 TD's in his first 2 games because Tech gets him the ball and uses his skills. It's not hard to figure out what your best players can do and how to get them the ball.

so will crab end up with 140+ catches for the year, or will the defenses possibly be better than smu and utep?

lonny23

that, and the tus and ous are usually the better team, too.
Yes, they're usually the better team, but the point I'm making is that the Big 12 doesn't like to see them get upset if they can do something about it. College sports are about money and the conferences know they have a certain amount riding on getting extra BCS bids and better bowls. I just think the higher teams in polls have built-in advantages with the refs in most conferences. That's despite any loyalties or dislikes of the refs, which also comes into play.

Bro, it ain't the freaking refs. don't be spouting that BS about Tech either. what you posted was more garbage than the refs have ever done. Save your whining for Dirk and the pansies.
Did you see the plays? I know the game wasn't on TV. It was Big 12 refs in a non-conference game. I'm cynical about sports for a good reason. I see foul stuff going on that doesn't look to be random. I saw 3 bad calls in a 2 minute span that all went against Tech and the biggest benefit was that it kept them from scoring more points in a game they were going to win. The refs weren't trying to help UTEP win. If the refs had called the game right in the 4th, I expect Harrell would've led them on 2 more scoring drives. It would've been a 24-28 point game, not 14.

lonny23
09-10-2007, 02:11 PM
It's always the refs.
It's not always the refs. They do plenty wrong either by penalties and bad play, but I also know that the guys in the booth can review plays and they're sitting high enough to know what's close and not. I don't sit at the games and gripe about every call, but I do see patterns and funny things.

lonny23

They'll play better defenses, but they'll still literally torch most of 'em because they really aren't going vertical yet. I'll say no on the 140 catches because he'll be on the other team's best CB, but he'll catch more than 100 this year.

I'm sorry, but Fran is already taken!:p Mack is not my #1 choice for UT, but they sure might hit the mother lode one day and get another good one. I know they've only had 1 good coach in the last 50 years, but they might get lucky one of these years. Texas beats Tech in spite and despite Mack, not because of him. I have to give it up to Mack for being a good recruiter, though. The recruiting is not what it was about 5 years ago, though.

I gripe about wins as equally as losses. You've been on this earth for 36 years like me. Don't act like you don't think that shady stuff happens in college football. The players cheat, the boosters cheat, and the refs cheat. I just say part of the refs cheating is nudged by the conferences. How often do bosses at work ask their employees to cheat to help the bottom line? That's all I'm saying the football conferences (And NBA) do with their refs. I never say it about the NFL, MLB, or NHL because I don't think it matters who wins or loses in the grand scheme of things. It probably matters some in baseball as far as ratings go, but they don't ever seem to steer things that way.
