View Full Version : Abilene dominates Westlake!
It was not even close in the second half. Abilene took control of the game in the 3rd quarter. Westlake does have a good football team, the Qb is going to be just fine for the chaps!
Any thoughts?

How was Westlakes Defense?

The Westlake defense was very good in the first half. In fact, they played even with AHS in that half, but they really wore down in the second half. They seemed gassed by the end of the 3rd quarter. They were getting good penetration, swarming to the ball and making sure handed tackles in the first half, but by the second half the line was getting blown back and they weren't tackling as well. I think they have a lot of potential though.

Ab. was better, but as jtk says, WL has alot of potential. Despite the final score, WL played pretty good def. Also, Ab. usually makes pretty good 1/2 time adjustments, & they didn't seem to tire down any. Ab. was very conservative in that 1st half.

with about 2 or 3 min. left in the half Abilene got the ball on their own 20 and took it down to the WL 5 ran out of time and missed a fg. it was 3-3 at ther half but Abilene was in control.

Wow, I appreciate it, but you guys are being way too kind.
Our D held their own in the first half, but in the second half, Abilene found something that worked; the Eagles took the motto "If it ain' broke, don't fix it," to heart. By the 4th quarter, half of Westlake fans could tell what Abilene's play was gonna be just judging by how they lined up.
Our o-line is insanely small and not lined up tight enough.
QB Walker Kobelan was afraid to throw the ball after his first pass was nearly intercepted. He was constantly backed up to the 15 yard line because he didn't have the timing down...and 'cause our o-line let Abilene's spy-linebacker charge right in. If we don't get our act together before we play Austin High...we're going to be in deep dog mess.
While I'll say some of the refs calls were bogus (including one of Abilene's TDs) I think the loss belonged to the entire team anyway. Our players just weren't prepared. We CERTAINLY weren't prepared to be unprepared, and we suffered dearly for it.

Hank Williams, Jr. sings about his Family Tradition, we have our Abilene tradition. :cry :D

I don't think Abilene High ran more than 4 different plays in all, but they didn't run many last year. Last year this this year it would appear, their offense is very methodical. It's not really the high scoring, monster of an offense it was with Potts. I would almost liken it to a modern day version of the wishbone because there is really no secret to what they are going to do. They just line up behind a big line an run the same plays over and over until one breaks through. They can do that though because even when one of their running plays fails, they still get 3-5 yards just because of the push of the line (the best coached line outside of SLC IMO).
AHS' bread and butter pass play was the same exact play that they run probably a dozen times. Warren will open thing sup more as the season progresses, but there is still a frustrating simplicity to what they do.

Abilene dominated, no question about it! I wish Westlake had the blocking to run the ball like that....
If Westlake had an offense, it might have been an interesting game. Not that Abilene didn’t have a lot to do with that, but Westlake has not mounted an effective offense in the scrimmage simulated quarters or the Abilene game. Westlake maintained a balanced offense 50/50. But that is yards! When was the last time Westlake was held to one touchdown, 50 yards passing, and 50 yards rushing. Not the expectation for a Westlake offense. Game plan, give the ball to swope or pass to walker. Or for a changeup, pass to swope. Oh, a linebacker is shooting the gap? That’s ok, we’ll just pretend we don’t notice and maybe he’ll stop doing that.
Westlake defensive backfield is not that tall, fast, or experienced. I expected some problems there. They did well, considering. But if Westlake had an offense, the game might have been close. I think Westlake has the talent to do better. Hopefully our offense will be better able to adjust to what 4A Lake Travis is giving/denying them because I believe their offense will not be denied!

I've heard a rumor that our unimaginative offense (since Schroeder left) was more imaginative last year because the father of our best offensive player made some helpful suggestions. I suspect all chap fans are hoping for some helpful suggestions, regardless of the source!

Do you think the Price kid should get a look over Kobian at Q.B ?

Walker really needs to make a statement this week, establish a field of vision, make the connections and put up some points. Hopefully, he will! Otherwise, I'd think Tanner should be getting the experience and the nod!
Here's the scary part...Abilene struggled a little on offense in the first half. Then made adjustments and dominated the second half. Westlake struggled alot the first half and came out with the same game plan in the second half. Where were the quick slant patterns and screen passes to slow the rush down a little? The coaching staff looked really smart last year...this year....so far.....

Westlake may have the worst fans of any program. I love to see how you guys jump bandwagon to bandwagon. You guys have one bad week and all of a sudden you are hoping for changes to happen. It was the first week and hell Abilene is one of the top teams in the state. You guys have serious issues. Let the kids play ball. From what I saw on TV you're currently starting QB is the only thing that kept yall alive. Very loyal fans though! Yall should be proud!

Someone started a thread to discuss Abilene dominates Westlake. One of the things that was being discussed was, in addition to Abilene's greatness, the lack of consistent offensive capability demonstrated in 3 scrimmage/games this season by Westlake. By the numbers, we have a reason for this concern. We are not merely jumping on a bandwagon. Us Westlake fans are really quite loyal. Sometimes concern for the team’s success may lead to discussion of areas seemly in need of improvement. Obviously, lack of offensive capability should be a concern to any team fan, no-less a long time Westlake fan.
While a final score or a big hit may be interesting to one person, what is working and not working from a team strategy perspective, and how the team is able to respond and make adjustments, is much more interesting discussion to me. While we may have our concerns, you can be sure Westlake fans will be at the game cheering our team for their successes, win, loose, or draw…

Westlake struggled alot the first half and came out with the same game plan in the second half.
That's the thing I noticed the most, too; WL made no adjustments, it seems, in the 2nd half. I just knew they would do something diff., but they just kept on w/ what they were doing in the 1st half offensively, & it wasn't working very well in either half.
IMO, WL fans @ the game seemed pretty loyal to their team. WL will be o.k. by dist. time if the Chaps make some adjustments on off. It's not the end of the world for WL. Ab.'s team this yr. is a much improved version over the Eagles @ this time a yr. ago (esp. on def.).

Yes, I'm a little surprised to hear someone thinking I"m jumping on and off the Westlake bandwagon--we've been season ticket holders for over a decade!
Every team that plays has things they do well and things they don't do well. I am concerned about my team--not jumping off of any bandwagon. And I know that we had some real offensive challenge after Schroeder left because I was at all of those games. I saw a real improvement last year--which didn't seem to be solely attributable to Nick Foles, but also to a better and less predictable play selection. Westlake football at its best has an explosive offense. I'm not taking anything away from Abilene, but our team must play better to compete. And I'm just hoping that whatever prompted the offensive regeneration last year might be pulled out again this year. So--no feint of heart here--just a concerned fan.
