AS I said BHS 06, i would be the first to congratulate you on your wins and here is the second one of the year. Final tonight was 18-15.......
Congratulations!!! just think if last week had yielded just 8 more yards you would be 2-0 in your district. Keep up the good work. South Grand Parrie is rough and fast...........Good luck

Did Evans play?

No From the DMN
Irving senior running back Jamaal Evans won’t play tonight against Hurst L.D. Bell, Irving principal Linda Kimm said Thursday afternoon.
Kimm refused to comment further about when Evans would be eligible to return to football, citing student privacy laws. Irving football coach Jim Bennett has refused comment.
Evans, ranked No. 23 on the Rivals.com state top 100 recruiting list, said he was suspended last week because of a hallway fight last Thursday morning at Irving High School. Evans said the incident is unrelated to a hallway fight in January after which Evans was suspended for two days and given 20 days in alternative school.
Three other Irving players were also suspended because of last week's fight and all four missed last Friday’s District 6-5A opener, a 38-7 win at Grand Prairie.
Evans needs 298 yards to break Cowboys running back Tyson Thompson’s Irving school district career rushing record of 5,755 yards. In three games this season, Evans has rushed for 902 yards and six touchdowns on 93 carries.
Sophomore Wendall “Chucky” Jones is expected to start in place of Evans. Jones rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries last week against Grand Prairie.

Ohhhhh...I knew something was up! Irving shouldn't have lost to Bell, but Jamaal not playing makes a GIGANTIC difference.
Sure a team shouldn't rely on one player but c'mon.....this guy is awesome.
If he'd played he'd of scored 4 to 6 tds with over 300 rushing.
Nevermind....I'm back to what I always thought....Bell sucks! :D

now, lets not go that far...Bell is a good program, and has lost alot of close games...and they DID beat irving, thats saying alot...It might not have been with evans, but a wins a win, and a win goes along way in 6-5A

Well...without Jamaal Irving becomes a totally different team. Thus, the Bell coach can't rely on game film. Their gameplan probably suffered a little because of it...theres two sides to everything.

I think him missing helped out Irving a bit because it opened up their one man offensive show Adron Tennell a bit more.
Irving had every chance to win this game. We were in our own red zone our first three series, and only came out with 3 points and fumbled it away twice. We turned the ball over 5 times and they only turned it over once. We dropped a few sure touchdown passes. We blocked their extra point, only to (watching this made me sick) watch all 11 of our players go for the ball and Adron Tennell scoop it up and run about 35 yards for the 2 points to make it 15-10. We turned the ball over the next 3 series after that and they could have put us away but they didn't. Plus, Joe "Namath" Mauro sprained his ankle I believe and we had to put in our sophomore QB who only took a few snaps when we were down big against North Mesquite to come in in our final drive. He threw a key pass to Andre Lampkin on 3rd and 8 to keep it alive, and Joe "Namath" Mauro came back in and led us downfield with a sprained ankle. They still had a chance after we scored but they did nothing and we stopped them on all 4 downs. We tried to run out the clock and they got ANOTHER chance to score with 16 seconds left from their 21 yard line but we sacked their QB for the win. They had every chance to put us away but they didn't. We never quit and we came out on top this time.

Seems like a very sloppy game for Bell. I am very happy for L.D. Bell. Thanks Coach Olivo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have known all along the Bell has had very good athletes.
Thank goodness that the other coach is gone.

Bell will NOT beat SGP...Irving Nimitz or Euless Trinity....so why are we kidding ourselves!
Heck, I don't even see you beating a decent Coppell program! Unfortunately Coppell has had the luxury of playing #1 Southlake Carroll, #5 Euless Trinity and Duncanville.
Not trying to be a jerk, but lets face it, running the ball, in HS, is almost everything, unlike NCAAF and NFL. (Well, unless you're SLC.) But anyways, Irving chose not play their premiere RB and they paid for it!
I bet those players will have some serious content for their faculty. This could dash playoff hopes! Knowing you could have won by a blow-out, instead of barely losing is un-forgiving.
And yes, of course, a team shouldn't rely on one player, but many teams do.
Just ask the Detroit Lions from 88' to 98'!

Bell should be able to pull maybe GP off, and possibly Coppell, it really depends how they do against a tough IMacarther school, and another very tough Irving Nimtz school...I tell you somthing though...there WILL be one team that makes the play-offs from 6-5A with 4-3 Record...

We ran the ball twice as much as we passed it last night, we ran 30 times for 175 yards and passed 15 times for 110 yards. So I guess you are right, we finally established a run game last night, something that has been lacking the past 3 weeks.
You keep your opinion and continue to think that and I'll keep believing that we will win out and grab at least a share of the district title.

High school football follows the basic fundamentals..run, run and when you can't run anymore run. Passing, in HS, is the equivalent of trick plays, in the NCAAF and NFL.
The teams that can really pass (SLC, Stephenville, Highland Park) will, most likely, always be a favorite to win any contest...no matter the opposition. Hence the reason SLC and Stephenville stay elite powers.
Running the ball is almost everything, in HS. If they can't stop your running game....your passing game is just icing on the cake.
Problem is most HS teams/players don't pick up on the passing game.... offensively and defensively...until they get to college.
If Bell can establish that balance....look-out............any team, on a HS level, with that kind of balance becomes dangerous.

With the spread offense coming into wide spread use, the run first, pass second philosophy is no longer predominant. Every team will (or should) maximize the talent they have. If they have the size and speed to run, they will run. However, many/most teams have a passing game that is as effective as their running game. In looking back over SLC's 2004 schedule almost every team had an effective passing game.

The passing game is VERY necessary to HS football nowadays, especially in higher classifications. I saw a team in Arkansas complete 3 passes...and two of them were screens. They ran EVERY single down no matter what the yardage was. 3rd and 12....run. They didn't have an option QB either. It was very very painful to watch.

You've just explained my point. Teams don't maximize the talent they have!
Hence, the reason SLC, Stephenville and Highland Park are successful against most of their opponents, regardless of their athleticism. You said SLC's schedule had plenty of decent passing teams...well that must be up in Dallas because down in the Houston area I've been to see at least 10 games so far and the only decent show of passing I've seen is Katy....and so far I've seen The Wood, A&M Consolidated, Ike, Pearland, La Marque, Ball High, Katy, Mesquite, Longview, Elkins, Lamar, El Campo, Westfield, Lee, The Lake...just to name a few!
There are far too many teams still using the run, run and when in doubt run again philosophy.
HS is getting better, but until more teams utilize the passing game, the way SLC and Stephenville does, they will be a one dimensional team to stop...which isn't difficult to stop if you have an athletic front 7....unless, of course, you have an athletic o-line that consists of 300 pounders or a RB like Peterson, Moody, Benson, Evans, Blow, Whitaker or this McGee kid.
I played over 20 yrs of football (hs, college, pro)....it's been, roughly, the same my entire life.

The newspaper is crediting him as Larry Mayhan, but Larry quit the team after week 1 for fighting. His name is Tate Holbert, he was the Freshman B quarterback at Bedford Jr. High last year and due to hard work and a good portion of luck, has worked his way up. He would be 3rd string but the Jr. Varsity starter got a concussion last week. They are calling him Larry Mayhan because he took over the #7 jersey that Larry wore.
And yes we are using Blake Cantu he is our leading reciever, he only had one catch last night though but it was a big one on the first pass of the game that we threw in the 1st quarter that led to our field goal.

One thing about last nights game that I haven't brought up.. both of Irving's scoring drives they had a 3rd and long situation, and they did the same thing 3 times last night.. since we run man press coverage most of the time, their reciever #80 would run up the sideline and not turn his head for the ball, and stop at about 10 yards and their QB would just throw it up to the general area #80 was at. Since our corner would be pressed against him, #80 would "carry" the corner out past 5 yards and tangle up with the corner, then #80 would use acting techniques to try to get the referees to throw a flag against us. 3 times they called defensive holding because of this and get a 1st down and keep the drive alive. It was awfully cheap and pretty desperate way to gain yards. Our guys were playing DEFENSE, not holding, heck, they probably didn't even know the ball was in the air because #80 didn't even look. If you are going to keep a drive alive why don't you do it the right way. You sure can't get that done against zone coverage. It was awfully frustrating.

5-5A doesn't make up the slew of other teams that have the run, run and when in doubt run again philosophy!
I saw two play-off teams, last night, in Clear Lake(?) and Pearland...there was, I believe, 4 passes total, thrown by both teams, combined. And they were pittiful passes thrown by Lake. Pearland never passed.
Again....I've seen several teams this year and only one has utilized the pass...Katy.
