Tragic car accident kills Copperas Cove teenager

COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Independent School District is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old student who was fatally injured when she was struck by a vehicle while waiting for her school bus Wednesday morning.

Krystal Duden, 17, was standing on Farm-to-Market 1113 when Brent Garner, 18, came over a hill in an eastbound pick-up.

Department of Public Safety Officer David Poston said it is unknown why Duden was standing in the middle of the road, and there is no indication of substance abuse or anything that would fault Garner.

It was Duden’s 17th birthday.

A first-year student at Copperas Cove High School, Duden was a sophomore member of the JROTC.

Garner is the starting quarterback and kicker for the varsity football team.

“The Copperas Cove ISD family is deeply grieved by this morning’s tragedy,” said CCISD superintendent Glenn Acker. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families involved.”

Acker said counselors are visiting Duden’s classrooms to talk to students. They will be available to meet with students over the next several days.

Killeen Independent School District has offered its help.

Acker said things are going well considering the circumstances, and the district will continue to monitor the situation to be sure all of the students’ needs are met.

This is a tragic and unfortunate incident. As a fan of the DAWGS, my thoughts and prayers are with all the students, families, and faculty. It is definately a reminder of how quickly our lives can change forever.

I am guessing that he will not play good because he will feel like he regret it so much and not thinking about football, terrible...

What a tragedy. You know that he will think about that morning and incident for the rest of his life. Even though he was not at fault..it still would be a tough thing to handle..especially at 17 years old. My prayers are with all involved and I hope that Brent is ok as well..

Things like this sure make a football game seem insignificant.

I sat with our Judson AD (3 of them ago) yesterday at the freshman game and shared this story with them. They had not heard it. They said at the Cove game one of the ex- Cove ADs sat beside them because they said it was way too wild on the Cove side for them. They got into a conversation about this Garner kid and told them what a great kid he is and that he came from a very good family. Isn't this a shame. You see, even good kids are not immune to bad events. There has got to be a positive lesson to learn from this tragedy, although I'm sure no one would agree with that now. On the other side, I thank God every night for watching over my kids. I don't know what I would do if something like this happened to one of them. I'm not talking only about the girl, I'm also talking about the driver. They are both victims. These families are going to need a lot of help so let's all pray for them.

What's your problem, man?

I noticed that his post has been edited at least once. That may not have been him, just a friend of his who got on his comp. I honestly can't say. I hope that that's the case, but ti's still a horrible thing for anyone to say about this accident.

*EDIT*
I just noticed. If you check the reason for the edit, it was in the wrong topic. Since it was the second post, I assume that he mis-clicked on the topic, wrote an entire entry, then realized he'd made a mistake as to which topic he submitted to. It may be a mis-interpretation by us, guys.

Ya, Garner is a great kid and a friend. Hes a heck of an athlete, it flows in the family. Garner has been recruited by big schools for baseball and football. Some schools are texas a&m, Kansas State, Ok State, Air Force, and some other big ones.

There is no telling how this will affect everyone involved are the student body. It's a tragedy and things like this happen everyday all across the country. Football is not the priority i can assure you among most involved but as part of the healing porcess the kids need to stay active and continue on with learning and growing which includes football or other activities they are involved in.

I do not know how this will affect the team but i do think Cove was off to a very good start this year with a never give up type of play. 2 of the 4 wins to this point they had to come from behind to win. They play hard and with a lot of hart. I hope that the kids take the season to the next level and continue to build on what they have started.

This accident just goes to show that no matter how good you are, things can happen to anyone regardless. Be thankful for what you have accomplished and always strive to be better to your fellow man / woman. Life is too short to be hateful.

Sorry about that, sometimes i see us computer quarterbacks talking too much trash to one another on here. I would hate for any of the people on here to take offense to anything i have or may say on this site.

GO DAWGS and God Bless each and every one of you!!!!
