This was in today's Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. I wasn't aware that Tre was the 3rd fastest player on the team.

This Newton shows no flaw

Carroll Dragons fans should be excited with what they saw Friday from Tré Newton.

The starting sophomore running back is still developing but showed he is improving rapidly after finishing with 12 carries for a team-high 129 yards in Carroll's 55-24 win over Fossil Ridge.

Through four games, Newton has 33 carries for 336 yards and three touchdowns, the first of which came on an 87-yard tightrope run down the sideline against Midland Lee. In addition to giving the Dragons another scoring threat, he can block, break tackles and is one of the three fastest players on the team.

Talk began about Newton last year during Carroll's run to the Class 5A Division II state title. After three-year starter Aaron Luna graduated, Newton figured to contend for a starting role but spent the first three weeks rotating every four plays with senior Matt Moorefield.

"Someone was going to rise to the top," Carroll coach Todd Dodge said. "It wasn't so much something Matt didn't do."

How can anybody that fast be the son of "Belly Power" Nate Newton? I had to throw the Kevin Greene Belly Power reference in there from Super Bowl XXX. He said the Cowboys offensive line used Belly Power and we all know Nate was the Chief Belly.

I'd guess it was a back handed reference to daddy's other flaw which was bigger than his belly.

What is his 40 time, since he is the third fastest on your team. Those are favorable stats compared to who you have played so far. You guys have not had any comp yet have you.Are your remaining teams better than the ones you have played so far.

It gets more interesting with Colleyville (4-0)tomorrow night, Haltom (3-1), Denton Ryan, and Grapevine..the only real weak team is Richland. I would just say that Newton runs a 4.5 or better...who knows?

there are at least 2 po teams left on our sked. chhs and dr will probably be the best, with haltom,if all are playing , keller and gvine a step behind. the po's, as usual will tell the tale. you don't want any coach-timed 40's. he went to regionals in the 100 as a freshman.

Well I know that any team that plays you guys will have a rough time, heck if you all had not move to 5a we would have three State championships...

I think he will be a huge help for SLC in the nest couple of years. This will mix up the pass and run game alot. But the defense that looked so good against Midland Lee, and Plano East, need to keep doing that all year if they want to shut down some of the opponents they will face in the playoffs. I have noticed that the dragons are very good at stopping the run, but are iffy when they play a team that passes alot. Should be an exciting season for those guys again. Maybe you guys can meet up with Lufkin or Longview this year, that would be a good game to watch.

I was at the first Waco game, but missed the last one, but both very hard fought games, anyone that can beat us deserves to be the best, at least in 2002 and 2004.This year is a little different, we are very young on offense and it shows.

He is close to Trent Rios's numbers. Looks like he is turning around, and putting up some stats now. With such a treat in the air, I figured he would be doing even better.

He's been sharing time with the senior, Moorefield..they want to be sure he handles the blocking chores..they are the most important part of the Carroll RB's job description....IMO

Yea, Trent was sharing time with two other backs, but has taken over the duties now. Hopefully our QB will step up. Or defense cant win every game.
