Redshirt freshman Sam Bradford wins QB competition at Oklahoma
By ASSOCIATED PRESS | August 21, 2007
NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was chosen to start in the Sooners' opener against North Texas, winning a three-way competition.
Bradford, a redshirt freshman, distanced himself from junior Joey Halzle and freshman Keith Nichol when he completed 12 of 17 passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns in a scrimmage Sunday.
''We are going with Sam because he earned the position,'' coach Bob Stoops said Monday in a statement. ''We expect both Joey and Keith to continue working hard and competing for playing time just like all our players do at every position.
''There may be an opportunity for them at some point and it will be important for them to be ready.''
Stoops said the decision was made Sunday, and Bradford was the Sooners' first-team quarterback during practice Monday.
Bradford, from Oklahoma City, succeeds Paul Thompson, who led Oklahoma to the Big 12 championship last season.
Thompson took over at quarterback in August last year, moving back to the position from wide receiver following Rhett Bomar's dismissal for breaking NCAA rules.
Bradford's father, Kent, was an offensive lineman for the Sooners in the 1970s.
None of Oklahoma's three quarterback candidates had significant experience. Halzle played in only two games last season in mop-up duty, Bradford redshirted and Nichol only arrived on campus in January after graduating early from high school
''We feel very good about all three of those guys,'' Stoops said. ''All three have made great improvement and contributed a lot to our program.''

I don't think this came as much of a surprise to most. I gotta admit I was rooting for Nichol to get the job though.

In a unrelated incident, Bradford was seen at the local car washing touching up a new Lexus. ;)
Just kidding, but you won't hear me rooting the kid - he is from Oklahoma - a rarity for Sooner starters.

We had a POS secondary last year, but the dirt burglar QB never got to see it because he was too busy running for his life or checking to see if he had lost any teeth... er... any more teeth. No worries though. I hear Big Red has a great benefit package. ;)

congrats to bradford...he's just going to have to make the smart passes and calls, not try to force things...while he has high expectations, stoops isn't going to make him throw more than 20-30 passes a game (like usual)...ou will have an outstanding run game so that'll relieve a bit of pressure. having malcolm kelly on your team also helps.

OUr O-line > anything Texas can throw at it
Get prepared for Allen Patrick running right down your throats and DeMarco Murray breaking ankles and making people look stupid.
Where is baby Colt going to run now that his All America O-line is gone? Hope he stays healthy long enough because Texas is average without him.

12-18 with 4 TD's in the last scrimmage, man that is a horrible showing for Bradford isn't it? If only he was as godlike as little baby Colt.

Just like EOD? Yeah, we're still waiting for that one. Let's see if they can score more than 1 TD in 3 years.

Yup, Adrian only scored 1 td vs Texas... but what's more telling is his production. He had 62 carries vs Texas, over his career, and av'ged 6.1 yds per carry. The funny thing is he had a solid O-line in 2004, injury in 2005 and a bad O-line in 2006. He had a non-NFL-destined QB (White) in 2004, Freshman QB (Bomar) in 2005 and a converted WR (Thompson) in 2006. He played against a supposed vaunted Texas defense in 2004, 2005 and 2006... led by many great players and future 1st Round Draft Picks. (Derrick Johnson, Michael Huff, Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin, Tarell Brown, Rod Wright, Tim Crowder, Brian Robinson and etc.)
If Adrian was EOD (every other day) vs Texas... what was Cedric vs Oklahoma.. 58 carries for 167 yds (4 years)... an avg of 2.8 yds pc?? EOY (Every other year)??? ;)

Adrian went to OU because he said he had a choice.. "go to a place that has won 2 Conference Titles and played in 2 National Titles - since 2000... or go to Texas" I don't fault him, at all. I mean what question would you ask him, at the time of his recruiting, "Hey AD, do you know Vince Young will be 80% of the reason why Texas will win a National Title, in your sophmore year? If so, why don't you go to Texas?"
And vs Texas A&M, Adrian had 56 carries for 280 yds and 3 tds.... that's 5.0 yds per carry. And vs USC, he still rushed for roughly 90 yds at 3.7 yds per carry. That's a better average than Cedric Benson vs OU, over 4 years.
You're talking about a kid that combined for 4,243 yds and 42 tds, over 31 games. That's an average of 137 yds and 1.4 tds, per game. If you project that production over a 4 year career (not counting Bowl Games), that's 6,576 yds and 67 tds. Again, I'm not counting Bowl Games - in which OU has gone to every year since 2000.
In big games (vs Rivals, Conference/National Championships, Ranked Opponents), with 20 or more carries:
2006
#18 Oregon - 216 yards (1 td)
#6 Texas - 130 yards (1 td)
#8 Boise State - 100 yards (2 tds)
2005
#25 TCU - 75 yards (1 td)
#16 UCLA - 93 yards (1 td)
#24 Nebraska - 160 yards (2 tds)
Texas A&M - 150 yards (2 tds)
#20 Texas Tech - 120 yards (2 tds)
Oklahoma State - 260 yards (2 tds)
#5 Oregon - 90 yards
2004
Oregon - 190 yards (2 tds)
#5 Texas - 250 yards
#18 Texas Tech - 150 yards (1 td)
Oklahoma State - 255 yards (2 tds)
Texas A&M - 130 yards (1 td)
Colorado - 190 yards (3 tds) (B12 Title)
#1 USC - 90 yards
Simply put, Adrian is one of the most productive RB's in the history of NCAAF.

Last I heard..
Joe McKnight is wearing a knee brace and is a co-starter at Punt Return. Sorry, Peterson was THE starting RB, as true freshman. Call me when he's THE starting RB, and he's put up Peterson-like numbers against those powerhouses, in Washington, Washington State, ASU, Arizona and Stanford.
Btw, do you know who was the competition for Adrian when he arrived??
Tashard Choice - who is currently a highly-touted NFL Prospect, at Georgia Tech. He was the ACC leading rusher, last year. Super-Prep All-American. Transfered from Oklahoma.
Kejuan Jones - who had a combined 1,600 total yds over the prior 2 yrs. Named starter, in Spring, prior to Peterson's arrival.
Donta Hickson - Super-Prep All-American.
DJ Wolfe - Super-Prep All-American. #6 RB in Nation
Not bad comp'!!

Yup, Chris Brown is 3-0 vs Baylor (4-8), Texas Tech (8-5) and Oklahoma State (7-6). That's hilarious, Chris Brown and OU beat 3 teams that 19 other teams beat. And, um... Brown had 80 yards vs Tech, 170 yards vs Baylor, 70 yards vs Oklahoma State, 7 yards vs Nebraska and 12 yards vs Colorado.... yup, that's exactly what Peterson did as a freshman.
Peterson played in 7 games, last season, and averaged 5.7 yards per carry. He had 1071 yards/13 tds, after 7 games. At his pace, he would've rushed for 1,990 yds and 24 tds... not counting the Bowl Game. Word to the not-so-wise, he averaged 5.7 yards per carry, as a true freshman, too. Brown averaged 4.8 yards per carry. (Which isn't bad... it's just not Peterson-like.)
You don't think Stoops would've put Christopher at the #1 spot, if he was ready to take it from Peterson??
