I rarely hang out in this forum and I didn't see this posted but sorry if it already was ...............

Apparently, just announced on Ft. Worth evening news. First start is against my Baylor Bears, then his second start will be in Austin against Univ. of Texas. Nice way to start. Unfortunately, I'll be rooting against him in week 1, but cheering my butt off for him in week 2.

Congrats to Andy.

Wouldn't it be ironic to hear of a Dalton to Renfro TD pass. We'll see how long he can keep the job.

I wish the kid every success. I saw him at Reliant playing The Woodlands. Good player. Hard to believe that there was an apparent QB controversy at KT at the start of the 2005 season. After I saw him carve up the Woodlands, I said to myself, holy crap. You mean they may have somebody who might be better than this kid? Who was the other kid anyway?

Jared Gayhart was the other QB in 2004. Gayhart is now playing baseball at Rice. Jared earned some playing time in 2003 as a junior on the state championship team, and that gave him a leg up over Dalton in 2004. That was a hot debate for most of 2004. Jared was (and still is) a very good all-around athlete, and the team seemed to respond to him on the field as well. Jared played some receiver in 2004 when Dalton was in at QB.

Frogs have their man under center
By JEFF WILSON
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

S-T
Andy Dalton Redshirt freshman Andy Dalton was named TCU's starting quarterback Sunday, emerging ahead of sophomore Marcus Jackson in a battle that coach Gary Patterson said was nearly a draw.

"I think they're both very close," Patterson said. "We feel like we have two good quarterbacks. Well, we're going to find out."

Dalton got the starting job, Patterson said, because the offense moved more consistently with him under center than Jackson, who is the only quarterback on the Horned Frogs' roster who has taken a college snap.

Dalton hasn't taken an in-game snap since 2005, when he led Katy High School to the Class 5A Division II state title game, falling to Southlake Carroll. His next snap is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sept. 1 against Baylor in the season opener at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

TCU won't practice again until Tuesday, when preparations begin for Baylor. Dalton will have two weeks and 10 practices to get acclimated, especially mentally, to his new role atop the depth chart.

"They've got to believe you trust them," Patterson said. "They can't be looking over their shoulder."

Former quarterbacks coach **** Winder said last season that the 6-foot-3 Dalton had learned the Frogs' offense quicker than any freshman he had coached at TCU.

Patterson called Dalton a student of the game. Though he redshirted last season, Dalton made every road trip, dressed for all 13 games and absorbed as much as he could about being a college quarterback.

Earlier this month at the TCU media luncheon, Dalton said he thought his film study was going to be his biggest asset in the competition.

"I've been watching film this summer from the spring, and seeing things I did well and didn't do well," said Dalton, who threw 52 touchdown passes at Katy. "I've learned from that. I think my film study is going to help me out a lot."

Patterson also said, as he has since spring practices, that the backup will see at least one series early against Baylor. The Frogs have seen their No. 2 quarterback play significant minutes in each of the past six seasons.

That includes Jackson, who served as Jeff Ballard's backup last season and made two second-half appearances for an injured Ballard. Jackson, from Houston, led TCU to a 17-7, come-from-behind victory at Baylor in the season opener after Ballard was forced to leave the game with a migraine headache.

Quote: "That game [for the state championship], we had a lot of people there. I've played in front of a big crowd before, maybe not as big as we're going to be playing this year, but I've performed in stadiums with a lot of fans." -- Dalton, on his experiences in front of large crowds[/color]

he got some snaps at rb in 03 as he's pictured on my wall-of-fame being tackled for a loss by a certain slc lb you happened to meet last fall.

He was in at QB on that play. That was the sack that precipitated the infamous non-field goal attempt. For some reason the center wouldn't snap the ball.

Yeah I remember the TWHS Katy game got a lot of press. Apart from the QB questions at Katy they were also anticipating the Thompson-Drabek matchup. Drabek made the one spectacular play just before halftime. But Will pretty much dominated all game. The TWHS special teams could not even get a place kick away all game because WThompson would not allow it.

no, it was a wrap around draw at the other end of the field. chubbs said they had worked on it all week, so his eyes lit up when they ran it. though he was in on the play you referenced too.

The wrap around goes to the fullback, so Jared wouldn't have been in for that (unless he snuck in and I just don't remember). There must be a mistake on the caption. The wrap around draw hasn't worked in 10 years, so it's usually good joke fodder among the fans when we see it run. :)

The wrap around draw worked pre-2000. But Katy still runs it once every 5th game.

i'll look at it again. it isn't a caption, it's the jersey. maybe the coaches were pulling a fast one and switched jerseys. chubbs met jared at rice this spring and couldn't quite remember how he knew the name until they talked about kt, and him playing fb too. one of the kt faithful has the game on their speed dial and can tell us about who was on the field for that play, i'm sure. it could be that jared was the other back and just got in the picture, as it was right after the tackle.

I think I remember the play totalling a whopping -2 yds. Awesome.

chubbs will check the photo in an hour and let me know, but he said that play was clued by jared going in at fullback, so they were all looking for it.

since we didn't have many plays of that nature that day, you're right it was awesome. if memory serves, it was a third or fourth down play, and meant the end of a drive, and no points allowed. awesome.

I'll have to plead ignorance on that one. Jared going in as FB or RB would be a clue to something fishy. It might have worked better to the starting FB. 2 yds instead of -2 yds.

alright, the requisite next reply has to involve the final score. someone take the overhead smash and lets get it over with.

Nah, I'm tired of quoting that one. If you'll allow the homer in me out a second...I want a another one to talk about. It's been four whole years. :)

Not from me. I'm more interested in how I let this play with Jared slip by me all these years. At that point in the game SLC was winning. Keep me posted.

i found the picture and it definitely had the name gayhart on the back, #11. it must have been a play they designed for his athletic ability.

I think he can hit a baseball better than run a football. He's in a lineup with Mr. Aaron Luna. :D
