I was watching National Geographic last night and the were talking about the Argentine Dogo Dog:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/dada4w/dogo.jpg

To me, it's a BIGGER version of the Pit Bull, but more "Human" friendly...it was interesting to see how it came about and how the cross bred the dogs until they came up with the perfect KILLER, but also the perfect HOUSE PET.

My son's pit bull is bigger and more muscular than that little weenie dog in your pic. I won't go in his house until he has it chained up outside.

They have ugly faces too.

I saw that last night also, I had never heard of that breed before. And they don't kill they only pin the prey until the hunter comes to either kill it or take it away. And they do look like a big Pit Bull.

Yeah that is weird...the hunt it....Two take it down from the back, two from the front and they hold it until the hunter gets there. Pit Bull with the mentality of a pointer. It was crazy seeing they would mix in one dog for sight, one for strength, another for size. one for endurance to make the perfect hunter...then to make sure it wasnt accidentally killed by a hunter, they did more breeding to make the dog all white.

I'm gonna invent a new dog....a Great Dane with a daschund....A big tall long dog.

Dude, I have found my dog. I just need to find a way to get him back to the states from here.

They have these dogs all over the Caucus region where I am, they are called a Kavkaszkaya Ovcharka. Roughly translated, it would be something like Caucasian Shepherd, but not quite..These dogs don't really herd sheep or anything, they guard the flocks. The folks around here will leave them out in the mountain pastures with the sheep and then go back home while the sheep graze. Keep in mind that the mountains around here are still wild places....wolves and bears all still roam around.

Anyway, here's a picture of this monster. I found one that is next to some people so you can get a good idea of the scale.

I wonder how it would handle the Texas summers?

It wouldn't handle them well. Honestly, you'd need to have a huge ranch in Montana or Wyoming or something to keep one of these bears happy. I would never try to keep one myself, especially in an apartment.

Still, I think they are cool. They aren't quite as big as say, a mastiff, but they are dang close. They aren't slow-moving or lazy either....they're active, quick, and alert. You know how the East Germans used to use those bad German shepards to guard the Berlin Wall? Well, the Soviets used these things as the Red Army guard dog...military installments, prison camps, etc. These dogs are bad....really bad.

One of the problems with pinholing these dogs is that the sheperds and working people of the mountains never really felt the need we do in the west to maintain "pure" breed standards.

The dogs were bred for work and not pleasure, with little thought given to appearance, besides trying to get them big. Plus, the mountians mean that people are separated by valleys and peaks and so scads of little sub-breeds spring up.

The Russians in the Soviet era have come closest to standardizing the breed, because they selected the dogs they wanted to use as guards, and bred them specifically for that purpose. They established state run kennels, and some of them are still up and running. Still, all through the Caucus region you see similar dogs, with some variations among them. Stalin favored the Georgian version. They are ancient dogs, probably among the first to be domesticated, and haven't really changed over the centuries.

I don't think that's a big dog. That's like Standing and Chiuahaha next to KT2000....it will look like a Great Dane. I think they found a 3'2" woman to stand next to the dog to make it look bigger than it really is...lol

Those remind of Newfoundlands, only maybe a little bigger. My nephew had a Newf, and he was huge, but a really sweet dog. Andy is six foot, and when Oden would put his paws on his shoulders they were almost eye to eye. :) They are used as rescue dogs and draft dogs. I also read an article that said because of their temperment, they are used in pet therapy with the elderly. Their downside is the amount of food they put away.
