USC Tailback Moody to transfer!

The sophomore from Texas was the Trojans' second-leading rusher last season. But he said last week he felt 'forgotten' because of a number of injuries.

Tailback Emmanuel Moody, USC's second-leading rusher last season, will transfer to another school, several sources said Wednesday.

Moody is one of three USC tailbacks who appear on the regional cover of Sports Illustrated's college football preview edition. But amid continuing speculation that a 10-deep position group would cause one or more tailbacks to transfer, the sophomore from Texas was a no-show at practice and at evening team meetings.

Coach Pete Carroll declined to comment.

Moody could not be reached for comment, but he said last week that he "felt forgotten" coming into training camp because of an ankle injury that forced him to sit out the Trojans' last four games and a hamstring injury that caused him to sit out nearly all of spring practice.

Moody had looked good in the first week, but he suffered a knee bruise in Sunday's scrimmage at the Coliseum and did not practice Monday or Tuesday.

Moody did not attend Wednesday morning's walkthrough. Afterward, when most players retire to the dorms to nap, Moody walked the campus talking on his cellphone.

After the Trojans began practice, Moody walked toward the dorm in a T-shirt and shorts. Asked if he was off to see a doctor, Moody said he was going to fill out paperwork and would have more tests on his knee.

USC's tailback depth might have taken another hit on Wednesday.

Freshman Joe McKnight sprained his knee trying to block and retired to the trainers' table for most of practice. McKnight said he would be out the rest of the week.

"I'll be OK," said McKnight, who was fitted with a brace.

Freshman Marc Tyler, who broke his leg last season, is not practicing and sixth-year senior Hershel Dennis has been held out because of knee soreness.

It was inevitable! You can't have 10 Super-Prep All-Americans at RB and think that 9 of them will be cool riding the pine, while knowing they could start at many top programs in the country. How the hell they were talked into signing is beyond me!

That would be a huge pick up for them. He would sit out this year & be eligible next fall, correct? Bobby Reid, Emmanuel Moody & Dez Bryant would make quite a trio for Gundy's team, imo.

I could see him getting some pt at KR/PR, but at DB... nope! He'd probably plac CB (too small for safety, at 5'11ish 170 lbs) and would have to go through one fo the Big XII's best CB's, in Martel Van Zant, and (potential shutdown-CB) Jacoby Lacey... both of whom started last year. In reserve, they have Perrish Cox and Calvin Mickens... both of whom can and probably will see starting/a lot of time, this year.

Except for he's being wasted on defense. That kid needs to be kick/punt returner, a slot receiver, a rb on select plays and take a few snaps from time to time. He may turn out to be a great db but he is electricity in cleats when the ball is in his hands. I also think that Ralph Thomas will do good things before he becomes so coveted in baseball that they ask him to stop playing fb.

Pete Caroll speaks about Moody transfering

August 16, 2007
Yahoo! Sports

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Emmanuel Moody, the second-leading rusher for Southern California last season as a freshman who is caught in a glut of highly regarded tailbacks, has decided to transfer.

"We've talked about it for a couple days. It was not a snap decision," Trojans coach Pete Carroll said after practice Thursday. "He's of the mind that he needs to move on. He's looking for an opportunity where he can be a featured guy.

"I feel bad he's been banged up and not looked his best lately in camp. He did well for us last year, and the first part of camp before getting hurt."

Moody, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore from Texas, gained 458 yards on 79 carries last season before missing the final four games because of a sprained ankle. He entered camp as one of 10 players competing for playing time at tailback.

"This will make the opportunities better for the kids still here," Carroll said. "Guys come here and know they'll play. If they lose that feeling, they're not going to fit. (Moody) didn't leave here disgruntled -- he's a great kid. He just thought he'd get a chance somewhere where the competition is different. He was at peace with his decision and said he had no regrets.

"It's tough here," Carroll said. "It's as challenging as it can get. That's the central theme of our program -- competition. This place isn't for everyone. Guys can have a change of heart."

Moody bruised his knee in a scrimmage Sunday night at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and didn't practice after that.

"He had had a tremendous fall camp until he got banged up," Carroll said. "I'm not surprised if someone wants to leave. But we're not as right (at tailback) as it seems. We're not practicing with 10 guys because some guys have been banged up. And we're losing four guys off this depth chart next season.

Carroll referred to Moody along with seniors Chauncey Washington, Hershel Dennis and Desmond Reed. Dennis isn't practicing because of knee soreness, and it doesn't appear freshman Marc Tyler, who broke his leg as a high school senior last season, will be ready to play any time soon.

--------

Exactly, what part of the scout-pitch - with Gable or Moody or Tyler or McKnight - involved the words... "We have a classroom full of Super-Prep All-American's at RB.. and we think YOU will come to USC and play!".....???? And if he actually used those words, he should've been brought up on charges!! (Screwing the minds of the youth!) And I guess he was trying to imply that Moody can't handle the competition, so he's moving on?? Well, lets think about it... you have Gable, Washington, Moody and a few other highly touted RB's on the roster, yet you go out and get more... highly touted RB's!! I'm sorry, Peter, but you never mentioned that when you were pitching USC to me, a year ago!!!;)

Could you imagine, as an NFL HC, scanning your RB depth and having RB's with the potential of likes of Reggie Bush, Cedric Benson, Shaun Alexander, Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, Frank Gore, Ricky Williams and Bryant Westbrook?? Then, as HC, you turn around and tell the RB's that they'll all split time!! Give me a freakin' break!! And to not pass the car salesman-con fully off on Carroll, what kind of parents would let their kids make decisions like this, especially if they knew about the situation???

This freakin' guy (Carroll) is hilarious! I don't know what you guys got from this read, but I got the sugar-coated aarogance of Peter, once again!!

USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Source: Tailback Moody will transfer from USC
BY SCOTT WOLF Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 08/15/2007 11:34:25 PM PDT

USC tailback Emmanuel Moody decided to transfer Wednesday, possibly to Oklahoma State.

Moody was unhappy with his role, according to sources.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore rushed for 458 yards on 79 carries yards last season before missing the last four games after spraining his ankle against Oregon.

He was The Sporting News' Pac-10 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

McKnight finds one role: USC freshman tailback Joe McKnight found out his first real role on Wednesday, when he was named a co-starter on punt returns. The coaching staff informed McKnight he would share duties with senior Desmond Reed.

"The coaches told us for the Idaho game I would get two (returns) and he would get two," McKnight said.

McKnight returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown during Sunday's scrimmage, although that was against the scout team.

"There's a lot of things I can still learn, but it (returning punts) just comes natural," he said.

McKnight is still waiting to find out where he stands on the depth chart at tailback, although he appears to be more of a receiving back than a traditional tailback right now.

"I still have no idea yet," he said of his tailback role.

Cajun61> I guess Joe gonna return a couple of punts against Idaho-Joe's a co-starter on punt returns..(lmao)...That's a heck of a program USC has-unreal....I just don't see how you can make that many great players happy all of the time....Time will tell...

Simple answer...they can't. I think two more of those tailbacks will transfer out of USC by the start of the 2008 season. Some of them will never get noticed on a depth chart like that.
