Thanks PA'05 - caught the tail end of this announcement on ESPN 1260 -- seems like it works about like everyone else's - not great, but it works. I think we can all assume why KF was put where it was on the schedule, but it still doesn't make it easy. That will be a heck of a game with little rest before or after. I will say Coach Outlaw worked his tail off to get others to agree to this. Again, same issue facing all teams playing.
I just chatted with someone who told me there is no way Woodville reopens before the first of the year, and that is only 50 miles from us. Feel for those, but fortunate we have a schedule to play.

most of my family is from Kirbyville, 15 miles south of Jasper...both towns are devastated....my uncle is a teacher at Kirbyville and what I understand is that both schools will probably not open for another month or two....
as far as Lufkin, I just want to tell all u Lufkinites that we here in Longview are praying for your town and all those people....now everyone knows that Lufkin not only plays good ball but you guys have the biggest heart in Texas....
ohh yeah, the schedule, don't care what it says, Lufkin 10-0....remember you heard it here first....

Thanks for your prayers. Yes we were hit with the evacuees, the storm, loss of power, food and gas shortages etc. but we are making it. Things are slowly but surely picking up. I do know that Jasper, Woodville, Kountze and a whole bunch of other towns to the southeast of Lufkin sustained a whole lot more damage then we did. All East Texans are in this together and we appreciate all the prayers, support and volunteer work that is coming in from around this great state of Texas and from around the country.

"Favpack - I will say Coach Outlaw worked his tail off to get others to agree to this."
FOR THE RECORD: Coach Outlaw's initial motion was to cancel last weeks schedule of games and continue the schedule as is. Other Coaches & Principals within the district said that was not an option, KF & LUFKIN WILL PLAY.

They should play. It's not fair to determine playoff spots without a full district schedule.
The Panthers weren't scared were they? :p

Lufkin is not scared of anybody, but sometimes football is not at the top of the priority list.

With Hurricane Rita causing chaos across the East Texas area, it didn't seem likely that the Lufkin Panthers football team would be able to play a full 10-game schedule.
But after a lengthy conference call Thursday involving all the District 14-5A coaches, the Panthers will be able to make up their game with Klein Forest and play a full slate of games.
The Panthers will have a hectic schedule for the remainder of the season that includes a stretch of four games in 16 days.
"All of the other coaches were down in Houston, and there wasn't any way we could all meet," Lufkin Head Coach John Outlaw said. "So we got on the phone, and after about two hours and 15 minutes, that's what we came away with."
Lufkin's game with Klein Forest, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 23, will now be played on Monday, Oct. 17, at Abe Martin Stadium at 7 p.m.
Lufkin's game at Klein, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 15, will be played on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
The other change in the schedule has Lufkin hosting Huntsville at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, instead of Oct. 21, when it was originally scheduled.
The Panthers' game at Conroe Saturday, which was originally scheduled for 4 p.m., will be played at 7.
"For me, getting the games in wasn't the biggest issue," Outlaw said. "The biggest issue is just dealing with all of the chaos in Lufkin the past few days. But we're going to do what we have to do to get this team ready to play the games on the schedule."
Preparation for this week's games is proving to be especially difficult. Several players are unable to get to practice due to complications caused by the hurricane.
When Lufkin did get in some work Tuesday, practice was shortened to allow evacuees to use the showers at the school.
"For people to be able to shower for the first time in five days is worth a million dollars to them," Outlaw said. "So I ran the kids out of here after about an hour and 15 minutes so they could use the showers.
"But it's almost impossible to practice. Some of our kids don't have any gas to get to practice, some of them have trees on their road. So it's not easy, but we're just going to do the best we can."

Most of you obviously do not know what is going on here in Lufkin. If Outlaw did not want to make up the KF game it definitely has nothing to do with being "scared" to play KF. It has everything to do with what Lufkin has had to endure as a result of both Hurricane Katrina (evacuees) and Hurricane Rita (evacuees, damage from storm etc.) Our kids can't even go to school this week because of all that is going on. Houston was not hit like we were so it is obvious they were not affected like we were. Had it been Houston that was hit like we were it would be the other way around. They would probably not even be able to play for awhile. Although the season will go on it will definitely be different and difficult but we will manage. PROUD OF LUFKIN TEXAS!!!

I promise you if the tables were turned and the Houston area Coaches and Principals were faced with what we are facing they would have had the same kind of view as Coach Outlaw. But since Houston was not hit like we were it is easy for them to say "Let's play all the games." It is not something that we can't get through but do not take it as if Outlaw was scared to play KF. We have more important issues to deal with here in Lufkin and I thank God that Coach Oultaw cares about this City and that he has his priorities straight.

Why do you Lufkin-ites have to get so defensive & jump to the "we're harboring evacuees" card? Nobody called you scared to play KF. From the looks of KF this season, it will be a game that Lufkin won't just be able to "out athlete" them to win the game. It should be a good one. Very curious to see how playing on a Monday will effect both teams considering they won't be able to have any team meetings or practices on Sunday, hmmm...

GET A CLUE. Do you think that The Woodlands in particular, or Klein Collins, or ANY other team that has playoff aspirations would want what appears to be the at this point the two best teams in the district not having to play one another? Either KF or Lufkin will attain a loss from playing one another. That effects other teams playoff chances.
Again, stop hiding behind the "we're harboring evacuees" card. Look at the situation from the football implications of KF & Lufkin not playing.

It is not a card so get real. We have much more damage, loss of power, fuel shortages etc.. so it is not just an evacuee situation. It is not defensive it is speaking truth to clueless people. And it is not like Lufkin just thinks they will blow past KF so get real on that issue too. Outlaw knows talent and a good team when he sees one and he knows KF is a good team with some great speed and talent. We all know it should be a great game but then again Lufkin has been in plenty of big games like this in the last several years. We have won some and lost some. No matter what happens, life does go on here in Lufkin and we still have more pressing issues to deal with. We still have a lot of neighbors in surrounding communities that are far worse off than we are and desperately need our help. And I know we well do what we can to help them.

I think Lufkin can out athlete KF and out play them and out coach them. Lufkin can out athlete the vast majority of the teams they play!! Sounds arrogant but it is the facts. KF had a very similar roster last year and Lufkin manhandled them on their own turf. Nobody is making excuses about the schedule!! At least i am not!! but i am not going to be on the field in those games in a short period of time. Of course this is a tough stretch of games but many will have to deal with this and Lufkin will be just fine. Lufkin was actually very blessed compared to several other cities and small towns. Yes it is a tough time right now but it is nothing compared to others. Lufkin will get through and Outlaw will have his team as ready as he possibly can but of course there is obstacles but that is how it is. It is not like it is a war or something?? Lufkin will be just fine as a town and a football team.

By the way, have you looked at Lufkin's recent record against Houston area teams lately?? Whoever said they are scared needs to study up on texas hs football and reality. I am sure KF is a much improved team with a lot of physical talent but i promise you they do not have the athletes Lufkin has. I heard about the great KF athletes in 2002 when they were undefeated when Lufkin played them in the playoffs. Lufkin won by 17 i believe?? Lufkin beat them badly last year with a similar roster!! Different year i know!! Sure KF could pull off an upset but beating Lufkin at Abe is very unlikely. Just does not happen very often but anything is possible. KF should be a tough team to play this year regardless. I picked them to be a very tough team this year and had them as a top 3 team in this district. I am not surprised at all that they are doing well. They do have good athletes but i know what type of athletes Lufkin has and it is very very hard to believe that they have as much after watching them last year vs Lufkin.

all i ever said about lufkin pack is they are a little over rated...

olded, bigger and badder than last years version that lufkin

1) Learn how to spell Klein Forest before you jump on their bandwagon.
2) Saying a team is bigger, older and badder is a pretty lame take now isn't it?
Were these guys all freshman last year, but somehow became seniors this year?

Hey thanks for your support Kingwolf. I told the P_T_H guy that other people on this board that are not from Lufkin would respond to the nonsense he posted. Untill that fellow comes up here from Houston and does some volunteer work with his EDUCATED self then his words don't mean much to those of us that are doing what we can to get this whole East Texas area back to normal. What we have here goes far beyond sheltering evacuees. There are people dying from the heat because they have no electricity, food and water. There are some that will not have electricity for 1 to 2 months in communities surrounding Lufkin. Not all of the gas stations are open and there are still lines of people trying to get ice and water. I have seen first hand what this storm has done to our community and the deep East Texas area and I am doing what I can do help our fellow citizens. It is not the end of the world by any means but it is definately not a pretty sight. Once again Kingwolf thanks for your support.

now back to football...yet again...show some respect....you all know that we deserve it... :) if that's cocky...trust me..the folks here in Lufkin wont loose any sleep if it upsets you ;)

I personally would rather live in a town of about 40 thou over a city of about 3 million. That is just me!! I got a taste of how the traffic and crime would be if Lufkin was bigger when most of Houston made a visit this week. I will pass!! LOL Lufkin has plenty of restaurants, shopping, bar's etc etc I go to Houston when i want to see the Astros, Rockets or go to Astroworld, or when my wife makes me go to the woodlands for shopping. ;) It is a short drive and i can go anytime i like. I prefer living in a smaller town and being in driving distance to the big city any day. That is just my opinion.

We are all glad to know where you would "personally" like to live. I'm certain I'll sleep better tonight knowing that. We that elect to live in Houston do so because with a population of 3 million we are in no fear of having a family tree with too few branches.
I have enjoyed the fact that I'm getting bombed on. I'm getting $10 a pop for every negative response toward me. A little office pool of sorts to prove how easily Lufkin-ians get their feathers ruffled.
Not to smooth things over BUT... my initial response was in reference to LPFAN's comment about Coach Outlaw doing everything in his power to squeeze the KF game into Lufkin's schedule, when I know 100% for a fact that his motion to the district was to cancel. I will reiterate that The Woodlands, Klein Collins, Klein & others would not accept this because that would "hypothetically" give Lufkin & KF a chance to both run the table. By playing the game, either KF or Lufkin will attain a loss, helping the other teams in their chance to obtain a playoff spot. My post was completely football oriented. Someone else used the term that Lufkin may be scared of KF - not me. And then LPFAN replied with his rants of how Lufkin wasn't scared & what hardships the town was facing with the evacuee situation. Why go there? Do you honestly think that Coach Outlaw's reasoning behind originally wanting to cancel the KF game was because of his concern for the evacuees? If you believe that then you are more jaded than I originally thought. Make up your minds, are we talking football or are we all patting Lufkin on the back for helping the evacuees? I completely respect what the town of Lufkin has done for these people, but don't hide behind that as a built in excuse in case something goes wrong this season.
From a football standpoint I've seen both Lufkin & KF play. Both are extremely talented. From my observation of the two, if Lufkin intends on using the big play to score all their points as they have done in the majority of their games, they are in for a rude awakening. KF's D will FORCE them to put multiple play drives together to score points & that will be very difficult. Jersey Villiage has one of the better O-lines in the state & they couldn't handle the KF pass rush. Springs passing game is much more sophisticated in terms of route combinations than what Lufkin presents, & Spring's O was ground to a hault with the exception of a long run at the end of the game verus KF's back ups. Then again Lufkin may have a simple passing game, but they have 4 receivers that can all score from anywhere on the field. In regards to KF, they have a very calculating offense that causes scheme issues for the defenses they face, but they havn't played a D with as much speed as what Lufkin fields. KF's Soph QB has looked unbelievable, but he hasn't really been in stressful situation yet. KF's tailback is the district 100 meter champ so if he breaks he's gone, but he isn't all that big. If you think that Nac's d-line got after the QB, KF's is MUCH better. I can't wait, it should be a real battle. And again, I'm curious to see how playing on a Monday afternoon will effect the teams.

OK that is some good analysis without getting personal. Call it what you will!! Sophisticated routes or not Lufkin will rack up the passing yards vs KF just like they did vs a very similar KF defensive roster last year. The receivers are just that talented. Lufkin plays the best every year and they are usually playing in December so i know they will not be in for a rude awakening if KF is tough. Lufkin is used to big games and travel and KF is not!! Lufkin's biggest deficit in a game in the last 4 years has been 9 points and Lufkin has lost 1 game in 4 years at Abe and that was to Tyler Lee in ot by 1 point. So excuse for thinking poppy's prediction of a KF 14 point victory at Abe is a little funny. ;) Lufkin played at KF last year and won 39-8 and dominated from start to finish. I like this Lufkin defenses chances vs anybody to tell you the truth. I am sure this game will be closer but i think Lufkin still wins by 3 td's barring grade problems or injuries. Those two things can change a team's performance dramatically. We will see?? I think KF will finish 2nd or 3rd in the district. They will battle it out with the Woodlands for the 2nd spot in my humble opinion. They could be tough in the playoffs with their solid athletes and speed?? Lufkin knows that district will not be near as easy as it was last year. They will need to be playing their A game to go undefeated again.

these people are truly worried about the evacuees....you're a joke....i hope they absolutely destroy KF.....throw a bomb on every play....

It sure was odd last week though?? wow!! It was like a movie!! Football just does not seem very important when that stuff is happening. Again thanks and take care wolf!! Outlaw can explain his perspective on the fiasco better then we can. This was in the LDN today.
Q&A with Coach Outlaw
By JOSH HAVARD
Thursday, September 29, 2005
Sports Editor Josh Havard held a question-and-answer session with Lufkin Head Coach John Outlaw on Wednesday afternoon. Lufkin's scheduled game against Klein Forest was postponed due to Hurricane Rita. Lufkin's last game was a 27-14 win over the Nacogdoches Dragons. The Panthers travel to face Conroe on Saturday night at 7.
Q With the chaos created by Hurricane Rita, what has the team's practice schedule been like this week?
A To be honest, the practice schedule hasn't been much of a priority for us this week. We not only have to be sympathetic to the needs of the evacuees, but also for the citizens of this community, which includes the players on this football team. Many of the players still don't have any power at their houses, and many of them are having trouble getting gas to drive to practice, just like everybody else here. But what these kids are going to do is they are going to go out there and try to represent the city of Lufkin the best they can because that's important to them. Is it going to be as polished as it usually is? Probably not.
Q After the Klein Forest game was postoned, it didn't appear the game would be made up. However, the district coaches voted to adjust the schedule to make sure the teams each played seven district games. What did you think of the decision to make up the games?
A I thought that for the safety of the kids that it would be best if everyone just forgot about the first week, and we just played the last six games of our schedules. We have tiebreakers put in place, so it wouldn't have been a problem for everyone to just lose a game. But there were several people in the district that resisted that idea. Many people consider us and Klein Forest to be the two best teams in the district, and they wanted to make sure that one of us had a loss coming out of the game. So we got outvoted. I voted for what I thought was right, but that doesn't matter. I only have one vote, and they have the rest of them so I'm usually going to be outvoted. But with that being said, when I looked at the schedule that they faxed in to me, I saw that the Lufkin fans were going to be rewarded with three straight home games. When I saw that, I said "Let's go." So I am happy that we can have three straight home games.
Q With the new schedule featuring the team playing six times in the month of October, how difficult will it be to get the team ready to play in that many games?
A We know it's going to be chaos. After next week, we're going to have four games in 16 days, which is something that I've never seen. Prior to this, we had the round-robin where we had to play Tyler Lee, Longview and John Tyler twice every year. I think it's pretty safe to say that there isn't a coaching staff in the state that has had the kind of scheduling we've had over the last few years. Even NFL teams don't play that many games in that time frame.
Q Has the team been able to build any more of a normal routine after Hurricane Rita came through the area on Saturday?
A Today was the first time in six days that I actually saw the drill team practicing, the band was getting ready, and the volleyball team was out practicing again. I kind of feel like we are close to getting back to normal. Things won't be back to normal until at least next week, but at least it feels like we're getting there.
Q How tough has it been to coordinate some sort of a practice schedule with all of the problems that were caused by the recent hurricane?
A We tried to have a practice on Monday, and only about 40 out of the 123 kids were able to make it. The thing that we have said is that football can't be the primary focus for kids that are still worrying about their families. When the kids showed up, the first things I asked them were how their families were doing and if they needed any food. Football can't be the most important thing at a time like this. Whenever they start to get their lives back in order, then football will be important to them again. But now, football's not important to them, and it shouldn't be. They have to make sure their family's OK, and get everything taken care of again before football can be important to them.

P_T_H there is no reason for anybody from Lufkin to hide behind anything. It is sad that you are the one that is focused on the evacuee situation. I merely mentioned it but also stated that we have more pressing issues and even listed some of them but you seem to ignore those and just keep bringing up the evacuee situation. Believe me we have nothing to hide behind and no excuses to make. If you ever read any of my posts you will see that I think Lufkin has a great team but I have also stated that it is not impossible for Lufkin to be beat on any given night. If we do get beat I will not be making any excuses of any kind. I have seen too many people do that on here and it just gets old. I will just know that the team that wanted it the most on that night will be the winner. I have seen a great Lufkin team get beat in the first round of the playoffs 2 seasons ago and most people thought Lufkin would just blow by the opponent. I am proud of my team but I am not too proud to think they can't be beat. If they don't get beat then that is just great but if they do life still goes on.

Every team that puts on a uniform has a chance to be beat and Lufkin is no different. It is just very rare these days!! ;) We Lufkin fans are probably spoiled but winning does that to you. Imagine how SLC feels?? I think Lufkin's 53-7 record in the last 4 1/2 years is very impressive but SLC is like 50-1 in the last 3 years??

I keep seeing this statement of this years KF team being the same roster-wise as last years. What does that mean exactly? KF's team this year is NOT the same as last year, along with some key additions to the coaching staff.
Lufkin's team isn't the same as last year either. Changes on both sides of the ball at key positions. Every team changes to some extent every year.
Ultimately no one will know until Monday October 17th.

I agree with that, but I keep saying it because KF had a lot of the same exact players this year that were playing last year. I was not very impressed last year!! I just wanted to know if they grabbed superman capes in the off season or hung out with Palmiero or Bonds because of the way some Houstonians were talking about them. ;) Lufkin's defense returned most of their players but yes they are very different on offense. Okay, to be more specific for you, Nac's D-line pressured the QB ALL NIGHT & forced numerous errant passes. This really threw a wrench in the works for Lufkin's offense. Now, knowing that Lufkin's o-line may be succeptable to a good pass rush, and that Clayborn didn't respond very well to throwing under pressure, why would it not make sense to deduce that KF's d-line won't create the same problems? I can assure you that Nac doesn't have a single d-lineman that could start for KF. If the o-line couldn't slow down Nac's vaunted pass rush, they are in for a lot of trouble come Oct. 17th...

That game was a typical "battle of the Pro I offense". Lots of iso with a little counter & toss. Both teams played close to the vest. NS turned it over 3 times in the red zone or the game could have been a little more one sided.

Do you honestly think that Coach Outlaw's reasoning behind originally wanting to cancel the KF game was because of his concern for the evacuees?
Uh. The answer to that question is no.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it is now Thursday and about 30% of the town is still without electricity.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the town nearly doubled in population in about 48 hours.
or
The stores around town have not been able to fully restock their shelves after all of the food has been emptied.
or
After opening our doors and welcoming our neighbors south of here, crime skyrocketed (check with the Lufkin PD on this), some of our schools being used as shelters were trashed, all of the food stores in the schools have been completely emptied, and the Red Cross/FEMA have failed thus far to replinish our school food supplies like they promised.
After mentioning the above facts, our kids will not be able to return to school until Monday at the earliest. Even the new Superintendent is admitting that possibility is optimistic.
However, if Klein Forest still wants to come to our house and get their customary skull beating at the hands of the Panthers, I'm sure the kids will be more than happy to oblige!
My personal opinion...
<soapbox>
The next time one of these storms heads for the Texas coast, the Lufkin PD should close all of the Lufkin exits. We should put signs on the highway, "Welcome to Lufkin! Nacogdoches is only 20 miles ahead."
We opened our doors with warm hearts and some people just spit in our faces with an entitlement attitude.
I hate to be crass about the subject, but I was disgusted at some of the stuff that went on here.
The sooner these folks clear town the better off we will be! As far as I'm concerned the welcome has been worn out.

PS - everything you say is true and I certainly share some of your soapbox feelings. It's called compassion fatigue. After Katrina, people are just tired of having compassion - it's a reasonable explanation.
Lufkin was spared the brunt of this storm, at least we can get online and tell others that it hasn't really been a picnic here the past week. B-mont, PA, Jasper and others can't even do that yet.
I guess the one thing that chaps me a bit that you didn't mention was -- 80-95% of the problems here and in other communities such as Crockett, Nac, Huntsville, etc. -- were brought about due to the evacuation of Houston. I've personally seen very little gratitude from any Houston authorities such as Mayor White. This is a guestimate - but I would say the Houston evacuation cost the City of Lufkin $200,000 or more - NOT including day care centers, gyms and others that simply opened their doors to Houston evacuees caught in a jam.
Nobody I know in Lufkin is looking for sympathy, but a thank you might go a long way. Instead, it seems what we've gotten has been coaches, administrators and others in Houston thinking we're somehow conspiring to rig the district race to make it easier on us. That's laughable.

Houston took in over 250,000 people at the height of Katrina. Many schools added over 100 students per school all over the area at direct cost to us with no relief from Feds.
Crime skyrocketed in several areas. We have neither asked nor EXPECT the mayor of New Orleans for a personal thanks.
My daughter has raised $1000's and contributed like kind to the kids who showed up with only the clothes on their back. True, many of them were on welfare in New Orleans but we took in as many as we could.
Do us all a favor and DO close your exits next time but I feel this is not the Lufkin I know and respect.

KC,
I've appreciated your posts in the past and I think everyone acknowledges and respects the lead Houston took with Katrina. I would hope you understand PStang's comments, and mine, are not directed toward everyone -mainly toward the complainers, looters and thieves.
In the end, I think Houston will receive ample federal re-imbursement for their help with Katrina - in fact, I would bank on it. I also know Houston would have done what it did regardless.
On the other hand, Lufkin and other areas were crippled and, to an extent, put in harm's way due to the fact that Mayor White ordered the largest evacuation in history. Not sure how that action will work out in the Federal budget.
The main problem is that the folks in Lufkin has done everything possible for these people. Our population trippled in size, shelters designed to hold 200 people were overflowed with 700 or more and still they made do with what they had. Some of the people were very gratefull but the majority of the ones I spoke with did nothing but gripe or complain about how bad they had it here.
The people that live here do not owe these evacuees anything but they help them because they are our neighbors and it is the right thing to do but everything and everyone has a breaking point and most of us have reached ours. The next time a storm comes their way I am sure we will welcome all of them again with open arms but for the ones that have caused nothing but trouble I hope they decide to either head another direction or preferably ride it out, maybe there won't be as many of them left after that... I could really care less

When has Lufkin ever dodged anybody?
Were all of these Lp haters on a different planet last season?
Lufkin came into a new district and totally dominated....right or wrong?
Why would Lufkin suddenly need excuses?.....
I am not there...but I was raised there and went to Lufkin High School.
My Mom,Dad,Sister,Nephews............and two of my children are all still in Lufkin....
I truly believe the people of Lufkin are trying to help out evacuees...I know that they have given a lot of their time and money to help the cause...
Any person that thinks Lufkin would use this as an excuse or a way to benefit....football-wise....Is a freakin' nimrod...and should be tar-and-feathered and paraded throughout the streets of Lufkin...while people throw random objects at them.

We are a peaceful town that happens to love our football team. We won't apologize for it.
Couldn't have said it any better myself......
