Here's an article from today's Houston Chronicle. It looks like some districts will be meeting today to decide what to do and some have already decided:

While Houston didn't get the worst of Hurricane Rita, there are many questions to be answered by area schools.

While educators in Baytown and Spring are more worried about returning to class, Beaumont and Port Arthur officials aren't certain when the power will be turned on.

"Beaumont West Brook and Port Arthur Memorial are in a world of hurt," Baytown Lee coach Dick Olin said. "There's no telling when we'll hear from them."

West Brook and PA Memorial are in District 22-5A with the Baytown schools, Humble, Kingwood, Spring and Westfield. The schools aren't certain when they'll meet to schedule varsity games missed last week or this week.

Impact in Livingston
Other districts still trying to determine their future are Conroe Independent School District and 18-4A, which includes Livingston. Livingston was hit harder by the hurricane than rivals Brenham, Caney Creek, Klein Oak, Montgomery, New Caney, Waller and Willis.

Officials in both districts will meet today. Conroe meets with Huntsville and Lufkin, while the rest of 14-5A — the Klein ISD schools and The Woodlands — will play this week's games as scheduled.

Katy ISD athletic director Rusty Dowling said 19-5A officials will meet Thursday regarding last week's games but will play this week's games as scheduled. "(Rescheduling) is not an easy task, because there are a lot of things that go into the decision," Dowling said.

District 20-5A's plan is to cancel last week's district games and play the rest of the season out as planned.

"We would rather not have kids play three games in the span of eight days," Fort Bend ISD athletic director Keith Kilgore said. "We just don't feel that is an option we can consider for the safety of our kids."

The difficult part is following a University Interscholastic League rule that doesn't allow football games to be played less than five days apart.

The UIL has made an exception, shortening the limit to four days through Oct. 8.

Five districts (21-5A, 23-5A, 24-5A, 21-4A and 22-4A) will utilize the exception, while several others (17-5A, 18-5A, 24-4A) are rescheduling games but still observing the five-day rule.

Districts 21-5A, 21-4A and 22-4A (comprised of Houston ISD schools) will play all of last week's games Thursday and Friday, move this week's games to Monday Oct. 3 and Tuesday Oct. 4 and will play most of next week's games on Friday Oct. 7 and Saturday Oct. 8.

Teams in 23-5A will play last week's games Thursday, this week's on Oct. 4 and next week's on Oct. 8; 24-5A will play Thursday and Friday this week, then play the next two games four days apart.

Jampacked calendar
Districts 17-5A and 18-5A have nearly identical plans to keep their games five days apart starting with last week's games on Thursday and Friday, this week's on Oct. 5, then the following two weeks on Oct. 10 and 15. District 24-4A will follow a Wednesday-Monday-Saturday plan in the last three weeks of the season while moving last week's games to the final week of district play.

Pardon my frustration, but over 1M Houstonians fled through SE Texas and returned - and took 95% of our fuel with them, and many have forgotten SE Texas is in a severe plight right now.

Lufkin is limping along, but you may not see Beaumont, PA, Woodville, Silsbee, Lumberton, etc. playing football this year - think about that for a moment - how does that affect the playoffs, scheduling, etc.? This is unprecedented stuff folks.

Rescheduling lost games is not even in the top 50 of concerns right now. People have no water, fuel or electricity and it's 100 degrees - the elderly are not going to make it another 3 days.

I have no idea at this point if Lufkin is playing this Friday night - we have no fuel.

You definitely need to add Jasper to that list Favpack!! They are in a bad way also. Might be November until they get electricity?? No water either!! They had 120 plus winds. They get their electricity from the Beaumont area.

I'm not trying to be insensitive. I had seen posts asking about rescheduling and I thought that this might be helpful to some. I am very sorry for the damage and suffering you and our other eastern neighbors are experiencing.

Thanks Pack - and Jasper is very much on my mind. Jasper is devastated - it will be a month before they really get back on their feet - miles of power lines are destroyed. School? who knows.

Jasper is a quality football program that was your 3A DII state finalist last year - got nipped by Gilmer in the title game. They are probably done for the year, or certainly for 4-6 weeks - how do you reschedule 4-6 district games?

Chapfan- thanks and I'm sorry if my post suggested that - it certainly wasn't meant to. Your post was timely and appreciated.

Football goes on in Texas as it should and has to. Normalcy has to prevail. I'm sure folks haven't forgotten about SE Texas - but I am wondering how we'll be factored into the mix. I guarantee you Coach Outlaw is barkin' right now - and he's fueling the team over any issues if he feels Lufkin is being slighted.

yes i agree... fuel is a Big problem.. and i didnt evacuate... but there was absolutely no gas anywhere near houston... or surrounding areas... lets us know how much we depend on it.... and need it to function.. and how we should be conserving more than we are.... ill stand by my belief... SUV's are going to ruin and drain our oil and gas resources faster that many of us think....

but i agree with the post..getting back to normalcy in the midst of a disaster is one of many healing agents... and I hope that these ppl in east texas recover quickly without too many setbacks...

we in houston dodged a bullet.... but.. someone had to take one for the team....and that ended up being east texas and west louisiana... so.. our thoughts are with them....

I think the decision to replay games had to be made immediately this week. I just don't see how you can ask players to go three games in a period of one week basically. There are no off weeks from here on out, so that's what'd have to happen to get the games in.

The best time to play the missed games would have been yesterday or today, but that was a problem with people flocking back into town and school out of session.

Obviously, getting all district games in for the playoffs is important but the health of the players is more important. They call it a collision sport for a reason.

I doubt if we finish the year this season. I know alot of people plan on moving so.....Hell, i'm trying to convince my mom to move permanently to Center or Lufkin. I rather deal with tornadoes than deal with multiple hurricanes in one year.

I wouldn't; I can see the hurricane coming and have days to prepare -- not the tornados. I prefer the somewhat predictability.

My mom is in a very rural area on Toledo Bend (Fairmount -- just South of Hemphill) and is quite miserable with no elec and water. They have cleared the trees but very little gas exists in the area similar to the rest of East Tx. FEMA is handing out ice and water in Hemphill so she has gone twice now. She said that she has never been so exciting to see bags of ice and bottles of water before in her life. But she is trying to keep her spirits up and make the best of it.

I know how she feels. That area is worse off than the golden triangle......from in between jasper and Newton on down to P.A.

I just glad the eye didn't really hit like they predicted but it still went over P.A., but on the "good" side which was on the left side.
