Rattlers, area squads set to start practice Monday
Randy Stevens
Two hundred and 25 players will usher in a new era of San Marcos High School football Monday, as the Rattlers begin two-a-day workouts at a new high school and new athletic facilities.
But along with new facilities, comes the tedious process of moving in, which is why the Rattlers will get a later start than most teams. Varsity and junior-varsity workouts on Monday and Tuesday begin at 5 p.m., while the freshmen will workout from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
“We moved it from morning to afternoon to give us a chance to move in. We will be passing out equipment at 10 a.m. in the morning, and our first workout with the varsity and junior-varsity will be at 5 p.m.,” SMHS head coach Steve Van Nest said. “The freshmen will go 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. because only two practice fields are ready for use.”
The school’s main practice/junior varsity field will be ready for use in a couple of weeks.
With so many players, the most in the program’s history, Van Nest said the new facilities will give the program much needed room. At the old school, the team were limited to only two practice fields, with freshmen teams working out on the baseball field. Once complete, all three teams will have fields to practice on at the same time.
“It’s a good thing that we are in a new facility because there are a few more practice fields we can use,” Van Nest said. “We would really be hurting for space if we were still at the old school. We’re still going to be full, but it’s going to be a lot better.”
The team will begin morning workouts on Wednesday, hitting the field for sessions at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Shorts and helmets will be worn through Thursday, with the team donning full attire on Friday. An intersquad scrimmage will take place Saturday morning.
Going into two-a-days, Van Nest said the main objective is seeing how much retention has carried over from the offseason, while doing some conditioning work.
“We don’t go nuts with our conditioning early. We’re going try to get in shape, but we want to be playing well in October, November and December. We’re not going to try and kill ourselves to be in playoff shape at the end of August,” Van Nest said. “We will do some conditioning, but mainly we will be looking for retention and where everyone is at after the offseason as far as knowledge goes and who has learned the scheme.”
San Marcos graduated 15 starters from last season’s Class 5A regional finalist team, meaning a lot of new faces will be will be on the varsity squad.
“So for a while we are going to keep things real simple,” Van Nest said. “We’re not going to confuse anybody and we’re going to see who plays hard, who’s coachable and those type of things before putting in the full complement of offensive and defensive stuff that we have got.”
San Marcos will host an 11 a.m. scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 18 against Killeen-Ellison at Bobcat Stadium, before traveling to Laredo Aug. 24 to scrimmage Alexander High. The Rattlers open the 2007 season Aug. 31 at home against Kerrville-Tivy
