Week 1 Recap
Week one provided one close game and three blowouts.
Best Game of Week 1
Irving MacArthur 21, LD Bell 17 @ Pennington Field
The Blue Raiders looked to be out of the game early, falling behind 7-0 in the first 10 seconds after fumbling the first play and 14-0 after 4 minutes of play. But the Blue Raider defense took it up a level and shut down the Cardinal offense for the rest of the half. Bell slowly came back in the game, with Jermie Blackwell returning an interception to the MacArthur 8 yard line, and DeAndre English punching it in for the score on a sweep play. 14-7 at the half, the Blue Raiders defense continued to play good. Late in the 3rd quarter, Blake Cantu caught an ordinary 10 yard stop route and took it 52 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14. Then, the Cardinals used the aid of 3 pass interference calls, 2 on 3rd down, to eventually score from 12 yards out on another 3rd down. Andrew Dolph hit a 41 yard field goal early in the 4th quarter to make it 21-17. With about 4 minutes to go, the Blue Raiders punted the ball, but MacArthur fumbled the punt and gave the ball back to the Blue Raiders. Bell pounded its way to the Mac 8 yard line without throwing a pass. But, the Blue Raiders couldn't get it in, ending with Justin Gent sacking Joe Mauro on 4th and Goal. The Blue Raiders still had a chance, but Dervin Speight took a handoff on 3rd and 12 with about 1:30 left 48 yards to seal the game and avoid the upset.
Other Games
Trinity 34, Coppell 0 @ Cowboy Stadium
The Cowboys couldn't move the ball against the Trinity defense, and the Trojans jumped out to an early lead to coast the rest of the game. Trinity held Emmanuel Moody to 48 yards and Dmitri Nance once again carried the Trojans to victory with 178 yards.
SGP 31, Nimitz 14 @ Irving Schools Stadium(Pre-Friday Game of the Week)
After falling behind 14-0 early, the Warriors scored 31 unanswered points to move to 4-0 and hand Nimitz its first loss. The SGP defense continued to play well and Denzel Dewberry guided the Warriors to a win at QB, making him 14-0 all time at QB.
Irving 38, Grand Prairie 7 @ Gopher Bowl
Jamaal Evans sat out of this game, so Chucky Jones took over and had 233 yards rushing against the lowly Gophers, losing their 13th straight.
Offensive Player of the Week
Dervin Speight, Irving MacArthur - In a game where both pass offenses struggled, it was the run game that decided this one, as Speight had over 150 yards rushing, twice that of Bell's. His biggest run ended the game late in the 4th quarter.
Defensive Player of the Week
Devin Teamer, Irving - He had 2 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown against Grand Prairie. The Tigers had 5 interceptions overall.
Numbers
14-0: Denzel Dewberry's record at QB, including a 10-0 JV run last year.
233: Yards rushing for Irving's Chucky Jones, taking over for Jamaal Evans against Grand Prairie.
13: Straight losses for Grand Prairie
8: Yards away from the end zone for Bell Friday Night against MacArthur late in the 4th quarter
48: Yard run for MacArthur's Dervin Speight to put the game away against Bell.
2: Straight games Coppell has been shut out.
48: Yards that the Trinity defense held Emmanuel Moody to on Friday.
Rising
Bell - Ruled out by many before district play started to not even compete for a playoff spot. Even though they lost against MacArthur, they proved to the rest of the district that they won't be a push over like last season.
Falling
Coppell - Shut out 2 straight games, it won't be any easier against MacArthur this week to move the ball.
Week 2 Game Previews(#Numbers show district ranking in bhs06's opinion)
Another week where none of the district's top 4 teams play eachother. So be on alert for upsets this week.
Game of the Week
#5 LD Bell(1-3, 0-1) @ #4 Irving(4-0, 1-0) @ Irving Schools Stadium, 7pm Thursday(Last season: 28-7 Bell)
The Blue Raiders showed that they aren't going to be an easy win in 6-5A last Friday. The main question of this game is whether or not Jamaal Evans will suit up for Irving. The Blue Raiders upset the Tigers last season, can they do it again? I know they would much rather beat Irving with Evans rather than without to get the respect they are seeking. Bell is still looking to find an offensive rhythm. Irving's defense has been solid but not great. This game can go either way, and should be a close one. Since its a Thursday Night game, it will be easy to attend for most so come out and watch!
Other games
#7 Nimitz(3-1, 0-1) @ #1 Trinity(4-0, 1-0) @ Pennington Field(Last Season: 49-19 Trinity)
Nimitz lost a lot of confidence after losing a 14-0 lead against SGP last Friday. Trinity continued its usual ways. Nimitz has not faced a team anywhere like the Trojans this year, and this should be the easiest team Trinity has faced so far. Another battle of great backs, David Watkins vs. Dmitri Nance. Should be over by halftime.
#6 Coppell(1-3, 0-1) @ #2 Irving MacArthur(4-0, 1-0) @ Irving Schools Stadium(Last Season: 42-0 MacArthur)
MacArthur showed that they aren't invincible against Bell Friday, but Coppell showed they still haven't found another offensive source besides Emmanuel Moody. MacArthur's great defense can cause Coppell more problems. The Cowboys are overmatched athletically, so they will have to rely on turnovers and momentum to pull the upset.
#8 Grand Prairie(0-4, 0-1) (neutral) #3 South Grand Prairie(4-0, 1-0) @ Gopher-Warrior Bowl(Last Season: 57-10 SGP)
Grand Prairie has lost 13 straight, and it doesn't appear to be able to break that against the red hot SGP Warriors. With Grand Prairie struggling offensively, and SGP's defense as good as it is, it will be tough for the Gophers to see the end zone. It is a rivarly game, however, so expect some strange things to happen. Should be over by the end of the 1st quarter.
Predictions:
Trinity 61, Nimitz 10
SGP 45, Grand Prairie 0
Irving MacArthur 31, Coppell 10
(Given Jamaal Evans plays) Bell 31, Irving 24
(Given Jamaal Evans sits) Bell 31, Irving 7
