I dont know if KT will approve of this thread, but im going to write it anyway
(Admins...if you dont approve of it just let me know)
With the six week mark coming around the corner for most schools, how do you think grades will affect your team this second half of the season?
Is no pass no play fair in high school?
I know freshmen year when i really didnt care about football i failed the six weeks and then three weeks later i failed again so i missed the rest of the season...after that i never failed again because i cared to much about playing, it taught me a lesson.

I think it's necessary....this is high school....not the national high school football league. It's sort of an exchange...you do well in our school, we'll cover the expenses of ordering equipment and making the game possible.

I haven't seen that happen personally...and in no way am I saying that it does not go on. My chemistry teacher was talkin about how a football player told him in the beginning of the year "I don't care". And now with progress reports due out next week, and he as like a 57 he all of a sudden "cares."

Oh I have, not saying anynames, but this kid didnt show up for classes, he would come in every now and then and he would pass this class with an A...no names though...
Sadly i was the same way at the start of my Senior year, but when I saw my progress report, i kicked into high gear, and suddenly i cared

Playing sports is a privilege, not a right...you should, absolutely, have to pass your classes in order to participate. It's really not asking all that much.

We had a few players fail this six weeks as we learned today, no starters though.

you should have to pass, i know most teachers will give you an extra point or two, to anybody, you have to have all your homework turned in, and come in for tutorials and what not, basically show that you tried, if you dont then they stick you with that 68, 69, and sit you out...their STUDENT atheletes, student comes first, a great little line our soccer coach told us

I agree...Football come second...one of the things we as cowboys had to do is sign a contract at the begining of each season you know normal stuff, but the one they always but in bold letters was. You are a Student Athlete, that means school comes before football.

I love the way it is done in Texas, for not just student-athletest but EVERY student in extracurricular activities. It goes for the bands, drill teams, cheerleaders, everyone. And, the band members and others get special treatment too at times....but you have to try, as was stated above. I like the fact that they can come back after 3 weeks if they are passing also.
In LA, if you don't pass a 6 weeks it doesn't matter, they still let you play. They base your eligibility on how you do for the semester. I think that is bogus. That gives a kid no real encouragement to try. They would just be ineligible for the 2nd semester athletics, but they could bring their grades up then and be eligible for the Fall. But, then again they don't do a lot of things right in Louisiana. Maybe that's why they're at the bottom of the list in education. Not to say Texas is at the top, but I do like the way we give the students incentives to keep their grades up.
I was in the Lobo Band for all four years in high school and I never missed a football game or contest because of grades. The only time I missed a game was because the band did not attend for whatever reason.

I really feel like kids should have to maintain a high "C" in order to play. I just think we, as a society, are turning out too many kids that are kinda dumb.
In my perfect world, the kids that don't have a solid C average by the end of the 11th grade should be tossed out of school and into the workforce. That would follow along with doing away with any kind of welfare other than what churches and community groups would be willing to donate.
My thinking is that: you can be a bum, but you wont do it on my dime.

I think a lot of the posters on this forum spent way too much time playing sports instead of paying attention in English class. Some of the spelling that goes on in here is awful.

yea you make a good point, soccer and band, dont require spelling, but even as a lil kid before sports was big, i still couldnt spell, just a family trait maybe?

I don't know.. I got chastised today on another board for a type-o..haha.. Usually I correct people.. It drives me nuts, but I know I have incorrect spelling more often than I'd like to think.
If the world were running by my rules though, I would have been tossed out of school.. Actually, I left on my own. I am the exception to the rule and have the advantage of by the time anybody wanted to check anything, the school I went to my senior year is no longer open.. But I never finished school. I got married instead. I've done quite well for a high school drop out that only knows how to work on lawn mowers though. But I've (pretty much) been with the same company since 1993 and all the people that were there that know about my little secret are no longer with the company..haha..

Yeah. I was a pretty big idiot back then.. Still am.haha..
Really though, it was really stupid and I don't suggest it to anyone. My dad was kind enough to cut me into the family farm and until recently, I've had to claw my way to where I am. I don't lie to myself though, there is a point in my company I will never get to because I don't have any college..So I will pretty much always have a college boy for a boss.. But that's ok, as long as people are having to purchase lawnmowers and stuff, I will have a job. Sitting at my desk in the air talking some other high school drop out thru working on this stuff. :D

Hmmm...that's an interesting idea. That sounds like something I would have thought up. That's offseason for FB players...I wonder if there are a lot of them failing then? I think that is a great idea and worth considering by TEA. That would go for all activites...they should have to pass the grading period prior to their "season" starting, too!

There is a quote from Shakespere's Julius Ceaser when Mark Anthony is euliging Julius Ceaser where he says "The evil a man does oft lives after him while the good is entered with the bones"
That applies here where one bad deed by someone at Carter is always remembered and often brought up. It seems that the evil has lived on while all the good things that have happened after that event are not thought of.

That is a true quote and it is true for Carter. The events of 88/89 Carter frequently comes up on this board. My community has moved on from that as it is more pressing present issues to tend to, but it's amazing how 15 and 16 years later it is still as fresh on people's minds as if it happened last year.

I don't think 65 would be a good idea -- it kind of defeats the purpose since it's a failing grade in Texas. They'd have to change the name to Almost pass/Play!
I think you have to have this rule because the education has to be the number one thing.
Without the grades, even the best football players get lost at the next level. They even have to pass to play JC ball.

If anything they should raise the minimum grade to at least a 75. Most students will do whatever it takes to stay eligible.

I know when my boy plays football im going to remind him over and over again that football isnt life. Because growing up thats all i heard from my friends and my friends perents. Other things comes first, as in the first meeting of the year our coach always goes over priortys
1. Religion- Faith
2. Family
3. School

Yeah, no doubt you should have to pass to play. People have to remember first we had school, then we organized little sports teams to go along with it. Its not like every township had their children play football then one day went, Hey, lets throw in a few classes too. The other part of it though is the whole no good athletes ever fail factor. Now maybe they are just more committed to what they do, but you know this rule does lend itself to a lot of star running backs taking all coaches classes...

They just happen to be the only school in Texas football history that had a title stripped from them. I'd pick on Judson if it happened to them.
I wasn't serious in the least bit way. I got the Academic Award in soccer in high school and was an honor graduate, so I know where to place priorities.

Seriously, I smart off about a lot of stuff and that's always an easy Carter punchline. You have done a good job moving on and in no way do I associate the events of 1988 or 1989 with 2005.
I do think Carter gets overrated during the year, though. They're on the right track scheduling tougher non-district opponents because District 9 does not prepare them for the playoffs. I say that about other teams like Clemens, too.

I don't know how much stock you can put into what Friday Night Lights said, but I think that was the first year of the new grading schedule that almost ensured everybody would pass. We'll always have the debate about what impact the ineligible player had. I have to say that all was fair with all the clouds over the team. Boy, I remember watching that title game trounce. Needless to say, the team I was rooting for did not win. Carter did have a lot of talent out there, but the game was merging of the best Carter had all year with Judson's worst performance.
