With the passing of legend Bill Walsh - I thought it might be interesting to see who is on your NFL Mount Rushmore? Remember, there can only be four.

The two obvious to me are George Halas and Paul Brown. No real debate there.

From there - I have to select two from Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi and, yes, now Bill Walsh.

In random order, I select Landry and Walsh, though it was very close.

Lombardi was a great coach - winning 5 titles in 9 nine years, and having a 9-1 post-season record. And, I certainly don't slam him, but I think Landry and Walsh clearly beat him in one key area - Proteges - with both men having multiple successes coming from under their coaching wings. I don't recall one Lombardi protege that made it big as a coach.

Walsh won 3 rings and his team and system won 5. Despite only coaching for a decade - he won a ton of games, and never lost a Super Bowl. He's in.

Landry only won two titles, but he effectively coached in 7 - two before the Super Bowl happened (actually the Ice Bowl winner played the first Super Bowl - but everyone knew the championship was played in Green Bay).

Take away Starr's idiotic sneak over ice, and Jackie Smith's drop - and you give the man 4 rings. Combined with an incredible 29 year run and the coaches under him - I say Landry is in.

And Lombardi is odd man out.

Landry vs. Walsh

Somebody's gonna get hurt.
You gotta be freaking kidding me!

Walsh was a flash in the pan compared to Landry! landry was a leader. Walsh was some kind of mad scientist who would think he was the only one deserving to be on the monument.(In my best Al Gore voice)," He invented the game of football, ya know..."

Belicheck is still alive he doesn't deserve a giant rock face... but he's a darn good coach...

Slorch before you go slamming Walsh...you should know a little more about it. If you read "Blindside: Evolution of a Game," there is a great chapter dedicated (sorta) to Walsh. It's brilliant.

ok, youre right. Brown should be there with Lombardi, Landry, and Chuck Noll.
Landry and Brown would have to be on each end of the row since they wear fedoras.

Yeah- Shula definitely has to be in the mix. Even though I hate that undefeated team - he's got to be in the conversation.

Vince Lombardi
Tom Landry
Paul Brown- the inspiration for coaches like Bill Walsh and Don Shula. A true pioneer.
Bill Walsh- his ideas/tactics completely altered how the game is played on offense, and as a result how defenses play also.

I guess since George Washington isn't on the real Mt Rushmore...that makes sense...
