HOOVER DAY 1: EAGLES SOAR!
July 26th
WOW! What a day. It had it all. Phenomenal catches. Precision passing. Goal line stands. Unbelievable interceptions. And even a little controversy. Evangel had as good of a start as they ever have today at the Southeast Select 7 on 7 National Championships at Hoover High School in Alabama. The Eagles went 4-0-1 in their first 5 of 7 pool play games. Playing in the strongest pool, Evangel took on 3 of the other 4 state champs at the tournament. They tied the New Jersey state champ, Don Basco Prep 25-25. then easily handled Hoover B 30-12. A score of 26-13 was the margin of victory over the 6A Alabama state champion, Prattville. The 2006 Hoover 7 on 7 champ and 3A Arkansas state champ, Shiloh Christian, was disposed of 39-29. The Eagles ended their undefeated day beating Memphis University School out of Tennessee 34-6.
On a day where the Eagles never trailed, a controversial play that took away an extra point left the Don Basco game tied at the end. What stood out in this game were the diving catches by DeLeon Moss and Virgil Williams. Dez Duron, QB, had his lone intercetion on the day when a ball was tipped.
Zach Summage, senior strong safety, made an interception that erased any doubt, in a 30-12 victory over the Hoover B team. Of note in this game was 3 receptions greater than 20 yards by Moss with one of them being a 40-yard bomb resulting in a TD.
When 6A Alabama champ, Prattville, took to the field, they had all the prowress of a major college. A game that was very competitive turned on a great interception by Virgil Williams who outleaped the receiver in the right corner of the end zone. This game was taken over by a very stingy defense that held Pratville 6 straight downs. The 26-13 win was sealed when Trey Wilson made a phenomenal break on the ball to get the interception.
Shiloh Christian, Arkansas 3A champs, didn't know what hit them. A 16-7 Evangel lead turned into a 33-7 lead in 3 plays. A 40-yard TD from Duron to Roderick Banks was followed by an interception by Trey Wilson and then a 40-yard bomb to Cerderrick Tyson for a touchdown. Final score was 39-29 with Shiloh Christian scoring two late TD's in mop up time.
The Eagles ended the undefeated day with a win over Memphis University School 34-6. Quinn Giles had 2 touchdowns and 3 catches over 20 yards, including a 40-yarder. Evangel will play Arlington, TX-Lamar and Nease, FL (5A state runners up) to finish pool play tomorrow morning.
