HOOVER DAY 1: EAGLES SOAR!

July 26th

WOW! What a day. It had it all. Phenomenal catches. Precision passing. Goal line stands. Unbelievable interceptions. And even a little controversy. Evangel had as good of a start as they ever have today at the Southeast Select 7 on 7 National Championships at Hoover High School in Alabama. The Eagles went 4-0-1 in their first 5 of 7 pool play games. Playing in the strongest pool, Evangel took on 3 of the other 4 state champs at the tournament. They tied the New Jersey state champ, Don Basco Prep 25-25. then easily handled Hoover B 30-12. A score of 26-13 was the margin of victory over the 6A Alabama state champion, Prattville. The 2006 Hoover 7 on 7 champ and 3A Arkansas state champ, Shiloh Christian, was disposed of 39-29. The Eagles ended their undefeated day beating Memphis University School out of Tennessee 34-6.

On a day where the Eagles never trailed, a controversial play that took away an extra point left the Don Basco game tied at the end. What stood out in this game were the diving catches by DeLeon Moss and Virgil Williams. Dez Duron, QB, had his lone intercetion on the day when a ball was tipped.

Zach Summage, senior strong safety, made an interception that erased any doubt, in a 30-12 victory over the Hoover B team. Of note in this game was 3 receptions greater than 20 yards by Moss with one of them being a 40-yard bomb resulting in a TD.

When 6A Alabama champ, Prattville, took to the field, they had all the prowress of a major college. A game that was very competitive turned on a great interception by Virgil Williams who outleaped the receiver in the right corner of the end zone. This game was taken over by a very stingy defense that held Pratville 6 straight downs. The 26-13 win was sealed when Trey Wilson made a phenomenal break on the ball to get the interception.

Shiloh Christian, Arkansas 3A champs, didn't know what hit them. A 16-7 Evangel lead turned into a 33-7 lead in 3 plays. A 40-yard TD from Duron to Roderick Banks was followed by an interception by Trey Wilson and then a 40-yard bomb to Cerderrick Tyson for a touchdown. Final score was 39-29 with Shiloh Christian scoring two late TD's in mop up time.

The Eagles ended the undefeated day with a win over Memphis University School 34-6. Quinn Giles had 2 touchdowns and 3 catches over 20 yards, including a 40-yarder. Evangel will play Arlington, TX-Lamar and Nease, FL (5A state runners up) to finish pool play tomorrow morning.

Calvary Baptist,Shreveport (2A) in Evangels's conference had a decent day also at Hoover..

Cavaliers go 3-2 in first day at Hoover-July 26th

Calvary opened the National Select 7-on-7 tournament with a loss to Alabama powerhouse Blount, but came back to win three of their next four games Thursday.

We came out on fire and were undefeated the first day. We beat two of the 4 teams that ended up going to the semi finals(1 in the championship) and beat 3 teams that were state champions last fall in their states and had a 4th,Don Bosco beat, but the referees were stupid and don't know what an end over is and called our game winning extra point play illegal and therefore we tied. We've started slow at every tournament we've played in all summer, and the first game on the 2nd day Arlington Lamar and their tall receivers had their way with us. We came back the 2nd game and beat Nease, who was 6-0 in the tourny and had beaten Lamar previously. Then we had a 5 hour break and were once again matched up against Don Bosco for the first round of the playoffs. Our Quarterback was on target for 18 out of 20 passes, but 4 were dropped(two of which in the endzone) so he completed 16 of 20. We had two interceptions that game, which came off 2 of the 4 drops we had, where the ball bounced right off our receivers and a Don Bosco defender made 2 great plays to get the pick on "the tip drill." 7on7 here works a little different, you get 3 points for interceptions and 2 points for your defense stopping the other team. So we missed out on two touchdowns, and our drops-turned-into-picks gave Bosco 6 points. We were tied going down to the wire, and with 1 second left and it was 3rd and 5, us having to get the first down or else Bosco gets 2 points for the stop and wins the game. Our QB throws a bit short and we end up 1 yard short and lose the game that way. I wouldn't neccesarily say we "choked" Longview fan. I honestly believe we were the best team there. No one could have stopped us when we were playing the way we played on day 1. Our little ol' school of 300 kids was wreckin havoc on these schools of 3000. I'm proud of the way our kids competed, we beat a lot of really good teams and learned a lot from our mistakes. Its frustrating to come up so short when we KNOW we could have won it, but when we're putting those state championship rings on next winter, our boys won't be remembering the 7on7 nationals in Hoover. Good luck to Arlington Lamar this season, they have a lot of playmakers on that team.

I'm not sure why they were the only Texas team. The other states run 7on7 COMPLETELY different than it is in Texas.(I wish Texas would adopt the way everyone else does it because it's much better and it's actually helpful to getting better in the fall) All the other state's state championship tournaments were qualifying tournaments for this thing, and then Hoover invited other teams. I guess the difference in the game led to Texas not being a qualifying tournament, but Hoover invited Lamar because they usually compete well in 7on7. I really can't answer it though. Again, I wish Texas would start playing this style of 7on7 and more Texas teams could compete in these types of tournaments. They're a lot of fun and GREAT competition from around the country.

Great job!...Always good to see Louisiana do well in something....

I thought Lamar would do good in this deal too from the reading here...

I guess Hoover won it all...Did they not have 3 teams in this deal....Seems like alot of teams to me..

Anyways, Hoover is set to come to New Orleans in 2008....Gonna try John Curtis again...Should be interesting...

So, Evangel is sizing rings already??...:D

Seriously, a friend of mine in that area said that Evangel's defense this year may be the best ever....They look that strong?

The Dude

no no, not sizing rings already, just figureatively speaking :D As far as the defense goes, they do look strong, but VERY,VERY young. They have a long ways to go to "be the best," but it wouldn't suprise me to see them live up to that claim come the end of the season. However, they'll have a few years to improve on it since there is only 1 senior starter, and a lot of sophmores. We have the talent and ability on both sides of the ball to possibly be the best team Evangel has ever fielded this season, but we need some senior leadership to step up to really take this team to the next level.

And yes, Hoover had 3 teams. I guess you can do that sort of thing when you're hosting the event lol. I'm not sure if they combined all 3 of the teams once the other 2 lost or not. I do know this: Hoover was definently no where near the best team there. It suprised me to see that they won it all. Maybe a little homefield advantage came into play. The officials were pretty bad at the tournament, very unknowledgeable

Just to give a update on why Hoover had three teams. Their JV team and freshmen team also compete to get ready for the fall. Hoover's facilities are just as nice as many Texas schools. It was a great tournament and I agree with the Dude that Lamar had some great receivers. I wish Texas would incorporate wearing helmets for safety reasons in 7 on 7 and allow coaches to teach their players their coverages and routes etc. 7 on 7 is a great way to teach your players how to compete and to get ready for the season exspecially if you are a passing team like we are. We are young on defense but talented in the sophomore and junior class. We have two senior WR, four senior offensive linemen, and two seniors on defense. Personally, if we can just stay healthy we will be fine. Nondistrict games with Westgate, Texas High, and Bastrop will help get us ready for the district games.
