A little boring around these parts with no high school football this week.

Just watched the John Tyler-Plano East DVD and the 2003 state game Katy-SLC. Both classics. Also, the La Marque-Denton Ryan was tremendous.

My personal favorites:

1. TJT-Plano East 1994 for the final 5 min
2. Madison-North Shore 2001 for offensive fireworks
3. Katy-Longview 1997 greatest defensive game plan and execution
4. Katy-SLC but the 1994 Beaumont Westbrook game is a close runner-up
5. SLC-Lufkin 2002 saw the Lufkin video replay and WOW! what a game

The '97 Katy/LV game wasn't good for me, lol. I was in the band that year and had to witness that game in persont he whole way.

If you had been there, I'd say the Longview/Tyler Lee game at Lobo Stadium last year was one of the best games ever played. Not sure if it'd be #1, but it would in the Top 5. After that, maybe the Longview/Lufkin playoff game last year as well. The crowd was electric for that game. The Longview/Marshall game in 1998, when Longview was #1 and Marshall came in and beat us late. That was a good game. And the week before, I believe, Longview beat the #1 team in Midland Lee at Lobo Stadium. That was a heck of a game too.

I have to say the Plano east and John Tyler is tops, but the championship game in 2002 with Midland and Judson was a great game.

PESH and JT are not even close to being the top game ever. JT dominated PESH for roughly 3 quarters building a comfortable lead, only to have PESH come back. If you want to call it the greatest finish in the history of Texas HS football, then I think you would be correct, but to call it the greatest game is a bit extreme

Agreed farmerfan, that is why I added "the final 5 minutes".

That 2002 Judson-Midland game was also a thriller.

As far as 5A games:

I would go with the 2002 Dragon-Lufkin matchup. Very sweet win. Then last year against SV. Very pressure packed game and the kids came through.

Definitely not the Dragon-Katy game

I think you will find that Tyler Lee vs. Woodlands with 3 OT's ranked # 2.

TWHS QB Dotson (Rice baseball) had to go 14 of 15 passing w/other great play from RB Samson Taylor (Texas A&M) & WR Danny Amedola (Texas Tech)

Looking at Tyler Lee's roster that year, I predicted that they would take state the following year. Too bad we lost against Round Rock McNeil last year to have a rematch.

Hmmm Ok I'll give the Top 5 I have seen in person

5) 2003 Longview at Tyler Lee. Wow what a game this ended up being. Longview played well the entire game most of it atleast. Then Tyler Lee, missing 2 PATs already in the game, went for the win with a 2 points conversation and didnt get it. Longview wins it 22-21. One of the few games I actually enjoyed during the district run in 2003.

4) 2002 Longview vs Evangel. Evangel came into the game ranked #2 in the country. Nobody expected us to even come close to them, not to mention beat them. But they did it. I can still remember our crowd going absolutely crazy when our guys picked the ECA pass off to win the game. What a game it was tied 28-28 until Alex Cammack kicked the 17 yard field goal with 46 seconds left in the game to put the Lobos infront 31-28. What a game it was to win and to be there in person. Over 10,500 fans filled Lobo Stadium in a 31-28 Lobo win.

3) 2004 Longview vs Tyler Lee, Homecoming for the Lobos. What a game this was. It looked like it was going to be a fire em up type game the entire game with 35 points scored in just the 1st quarter. After that though, the defense awoke and ended up being the game that we thought it would be for, the District Championship. What a game it was. Especially the ending. Vondrell running 25 yards in overtime for the win. Man I never thought my voice would come back after that game.

2) 1998 Longview vs Marshall. While the Lobos lost, it was a game for the ages. Longview coming in ranked #1 in the State and againist our arch rivals from Marshall. Game going into double overtime. What a game it was with the Mavericks pulling it out 35-28 in Double OT.

1) 2002 Longview vs Lufkin, State Quarterfinals. While it was 14-0 at the half the drama around the whole ordeal was unreal. A packed Rose Stadium. People everywhere you moved. Longview came back and went up 21-14 in the 4th. I dont think I sat down the entire 2nd half. Unbelieveable game and a 24-21 Lp win with 5 seconds left made this one #1 for me.

You got them switched. The Judson game was better. I refuse to give that much credit to a game that was close because of bad coaching on JT's part.

Just watched the John Tyler-Plano East DVD....

You know I have read about that finish a couple of times but have never been able to actually watch it. Where did you get a copy of the DVD from? I am interested in buying a copy of the game just to watch the last 5 minutes!

As an Ike grad, I went through many seasons of getting beat up by Humble. Great to see them win. Just don't count that Midland Lee state game. Just horrible.

Woodlands fan now. Even at 1-2, we are a few clicks away from getting back there. If players gell & coachs make the right decisons on player personnel, we are there.

This team is too strong & fast. Needs experience which will come in a few games. It's about playoffs !

Tyler Lee vs TWHS has to be one of the greatest as it was not just one play.....it was every play in that game. Not a state game.... but one of the greatest state playoff games.

My personal favorites (what else):

1. 1996 State Championship - Westlake 55, Abilene Cooper 15
An unbelieveable combination of strength at every position, the incredible passing duo of Drew Brees and Ryan Reed openned up the running game for Brett Robin, Matt Murphy, Brent Chalmers, and Jamie Tyler. Jeremy Amos was outstanding on defense in the secondary as well as a receiving threat. The lineman as well as the defensive backs were well known for strength and speed. Seth McKinney played in the state championship game despite being out for most of his senior season due to excessive flare at the seasons first pep rally. I believe that it could have been a repeat championship if Drew Brees hadn't had his ACL torn in a game with Alice the previous season.

2. 2000 Bi-district game against Converse Judson at the Alamo Dome
Judson had dominated that era and had in a previous season beaten WL at home. CJ came out whooping, and high fiving, and jumping around the field in their usual intimidating style in pre-game warm-ups. WL warmed up with focus and looked like a team on a mission. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, 35-6 Westlake.

Footnote:
WL was defeated that year in the State Championship game 35-21 by Midland Lee. Huston Street was introduced to Cedric Benson who dominated three state championships with short and long yardage and 5 TD's. This was not on my favorite game list, but fortunately Huston recovered and was still able to pitch baseballs for UT and now Oakland...

Y'all come on now, Katy v Humble 2002 37 - 36 was pretty damn sweet. I mean given how I like to rag on Katy that means a lot coming from me. Plus, I would throw the Madison North Shore game into number one and get that semifinal 51-48 win for Tyler lee over woodlands in there somewhere

If you talk about Hype, the best game was the 2004 Denton Ryan/SLC game that was on ESPN2. That was a circus and a half! The game lived up to its hype for about 1 quarter untill the Dragons started to pull away. It was a shame that a great Deton Ryan team only had two loses that year and both of them were to the Dragons! One on ESPN and the other in the playoffs at Texas Stadium.

actually the game was close throughout....Plano east was about to score and make it a nailbiter in the fourth qtr. 27-24 but fumbled on the goaline and tyler ran it back 99 yrds/td(34-17). then fumbled the ensuing kickoff / returned for td(41-17). then the comeback started. so it was a great game with a wild fourth qtr. I think my stats are correct, but i have slept since i watched the tape last.

Games I've seen:

1.1992 Temple vs Odessa Permian. possibly the best game of that year
2.1992 Temple vs Converse judson ive seen a video great come back by temple
3.2003 Temple vs Pflugerville. A last minute block by john hamilton on The 1 yard line With 0.1 sec's left to give temple the win 24-21

4. 2003 Temple vs AMC. Temple RB showed that he could compete with RT
5. 2003 Temple Vs Woodlands (even if we got screwed by refs) up and down great coaching to the last minute awsome plays made by both sides.

2003 North Shore Vs Woodlands North Shore... wow ive never seen any team in the state of texas that has been able to come close to compete with 2003 North Shore.

2003 Katy vs SlC great plays made on both sides for both team's great game palyed to the last secound

2002 West Lake Vs Smithson Valley. Great Game that year West Lake gave Smithson valley a loss they wouldn't forget till play off's

2000 West lake Vs Belton Though belton as horrible that year West lake showed a great abundance of everything

And if these games count

2005 University of Texas Vs Michigan Rose Bowl. Showed Every one what Texas is made of

2005 University of Texas Vs Ohio State University. Yet again when every one wants Texas to lose they prevail again

2005 USC Vs OU USC showed why they would be the NTL champs again

and those are my favorite games right there

C'Mon, SLC/Katy Final was a good game. How many State Finals end with a one point difference in score and not really be over until 45 secs left in the game? Just 'cause ya'll didn't win doesn't mean it wasn't a great game.
Our loss to Clear Lake last year was painful but it was a good game too. Two overtime periods was very entertaining. Wished we would have won but the game was good just the same.
Did any of the Dragon faithful stay for the Div II, 4A final after our game was over? La Marque was the winner in (3?) overtime periods against a team whose name I can't recall at the moment. That was an exciting game.

Put me down for the Clear Lake v. Katy R3 finals. 35-34 in 2 OT's after Lake blocked a field goal with time running out that would have won it for Katy in regulation. And a gutsy call by Katy in 2nd OT to go for 2 to win it that Lake shut down.

Yeah, yeah nobody cares about Lake...one time wonder, blah, blah, blah but it was a tremendous game.

#1 2001 Lufkin vs Euless Trinity

In a pooring rain storm RB Chupee Joe and Euless Trinity built a 20-0 Haltime lead only to see Reggie McNeal and the Cardiac Pack coming storming back to win in the final 20 seconds of the game on a 35 Yard TD pass from McNeal to Berry. Final Lufkin 27 Euless Trinity 23

#2 and #3 I refuse to elaborate on but the dates are 2002, and 2004.

1996 when Lewisville rolled over Judson 58-34, they could of scored 80 easily on Judson that day! I couldn't believe it small enrollment Lewisville Farmers....

2001 Mesquite beating SA Taft 14-13 in a down-pour at the ROCK!

2003 Katy 16 Southlake Carroll 15... this game resembled a high-stake CHESS game, any small mistake was going to be fatal for the opposing team. Both teams were like precise technicians on both sides of the ball.

1998 Midland Lee / Odessa Permian - Midland Lee drove down the field with about a minute left and scored the winning TD.

I think is was 1989 - A.P. Poll had Arlington Lamar ranked 1 and Permian 2....game was played at Ratliff and Permian won...Lamar scored one lone TD that day.....

Katy-Humble '02 was probably the most physical HS game I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them. I think 8 kids went to the emergency room after the game. Austin Westlake was the #1 team in the state at the time and had lost the night before. Humble was #2 and would have been #1 if not for the loss to Katy. Humble was looking for revenge in the play-offs, but went down to the Tigers again. Humble went 12-2 that year with both losses coming from Katy.

Sweet. Thanks Prophet. Youre an idiot, but we agree on this game.

Top 5 Katy wins that I've seen (started in 1998)

The "02 Humble and '03 SLC games which have been mentioned are two. :o

'98 Hastings (26-23) - A vicious sandwich hit by two Katy defenders caused a fumble after a pass reception and the Tigers scored as time ran out to seal the comeback victory. This was the toughest game of an unbeaten (on the field) season. ;)

'00 Hastings (21-14) - Katy's defense stopped a potential game tying Hastings drive fairly early in the 4th and the offense ate up the rest of the game with a methodical drive of their own. This was the only game that the Tigers won by less than 2 tds. :p

'03 Elsik (38-34) - A tremendous comeback victory that gave everyone in Tigerland confidence going into the playoffs. A championship wasn't a thought after the Luflin fiasco, but this game propelled them. :)

Lastly, give both Clear Lake and Katy credit for the best game I've seen Katy lose.

I don't think the SLC / Lufkin game last year was a great game. It was good because both teams gave it their best fight, but I thought it was pretty ugly at times. I mean Lufkin at one point went to an offense that featured Lane as the QB running keepers up the middle every play. Certainly a good entertaining game but not a great one by any means.

Some oldtimers would include the 1964 first round playoff game between Garland and Texarkana. Garland scored 2 TD's in the last 2 minutes to win and go on to the second consecutive state championship.

The best I've personally seen is the Garland/South Grand Prairie semi-final game in a driving rainstorm in Texas Stadium in 1999, and the Celina/Royse City playoff game in about 1989.

The top 5 games I've seen in person....

#1 JT vs PESH (1994) - Regional Semifinals - My first John Tyler game, I was actually there with my family to watch Plano beat Lufkin (and so I was sitting on Plano's side), but since the rivals of my parent's alma maters were JT and PESH, we decided to stay and watch them as well. I don't remember much of the first 3 quarters, but man do I remember the end. I guess because I grew up a fan of Plano and despise PESH more then any other team in all of sports, I gradually began rooting for JT more and more throughout the game. Then, by the famous kickoff return, I had become a fan for life, and was the ONLY person it seemed like cheering or even saying anything on East’s side of the field. I’ll always remember how DEATHLY silent it was on PESH’s side and how DEATHLY loud it was on JT’s side during that runback.

#2 Lee vs Woodlands (2003) – State Quarterfinals - I rank this number 2 because I got the watch the entire game on Lee’s sideline due to my cousin being a cheerleader. It was a great game despite the lack of any defense during the game. But watching all 3 OT’s on the 4 or 5 yd line was pretty awesome. :D

tied #3 JT vs Lee (1998) – Last game of the season that determined the district title. This was also the last real Mud Bowl of Rose Stadium before we got turf. If Lee won, they got the title. If JT won, they got the title, however if they lost, they were out of the playoffs completely, so it was a real All or Nothing scenario. JT finally won the game 34-28 in 2 OT’s in a very close game.

tied #3 JT vs Waco (2000) – State Quaterfinals - Derrick Johnson’s last HS game. JT was down 21-0 with 9 or so mins left in the 3rd, but came back to tie it by the end of regulation and won it during overtime on their way to the State Championship game.

tied #3 Longview vs Lufkin (2002) – State Quaterfinals - I’ve been to over 50 games at Rose Stadium, and this game is the still the most packed I’ve ever seen that place. I’ve always wanted to see every seat filled and the south endzone hill crammed with people, but I think this is the closest it’ll ever come to that. But the atmosphere that day with that stadium full was amazing and gave me chills thoughout the game. Somehow I managed to find a seat on the 50 yd line and watched an incredible game that fittingly ended in the last seconds.

Waco vs Cujo was always great games.....Waco would always be ahead in the playoffs.......and Cujo would always come back at the end and steal it.

2001 game in Waco we got revenge 22-21...and that was when JT started on its downward spiral.

Sweetest Victories
• Katy vs. Longview 1997. Longview #1 in nation, talking same as this year, watched all their playoffs at Texas Stadium. Also saw Katy - Ike game at Rice that year. Having seen both play, picked Katy but not enough to bet on them.
• Katy vs. SLC 2003. Again, saw both play – SLC at Texas Stadium, Katy at the Katydome. Just hope Trinity can do it this year. If SLC goes Div. II, don’t know who can beat them.

Most Exciting Games Seen Live
• Katy vs. Aldine Eisenhower 1997 at Rice Stadium. Add Mayde Creek with Curtis Fagan (OU) vs. Beaumont Westbrook - best doubleheader, best football weather.
• SLC vs. Lufkin 2002. Passed up Katy playoff to see this one.

Best Individual Performance Seen Live
• Curtis Fagan, Katy Mayde Creek vs. Beaumont Westbrook, albeit for losing team.
• Chase Wasson, SLC vs. Lufkin. Just for the last minutes of the 4th Quarter, 4th and 17? pass almost from a knee
• Vincent Young – Katy vs. Houston Madison 2001. Most Man Among Boys performance since Eric Dickerson at Sealy.
