Anyone have any updates on some of the towns that were hit hard by the Rita? My mom and dad live in Lufkin and they have alot of damage. A tree fell on the house and took out the firplace and put a hole in the roof, and also fell on their new Dodge Durango, but everyone seems to be fine now. I have not heard about any other cities yet, but alot of powerlines down and lots of trees and buildings torn up. They are not sure if they will even play next week either.

Hey all,
My first official check-in online. Sunday at 10:15 am - we have power and computers back up and running at my office in central Lufkin - and unbelievably cable for internet.
The home is still totally without power. We are all alive and well. Lufkin got hit hard, but not near as hard as Jasper Texas, just 45 miles southeast of us.
Lake Charles, LA got the brunt of this storm - so, keep that area in your prayers.
We had a minor leak from wind/water, some missing shingles and just mess. My neighbor across the street got a major oak through his house. Everyone's ok, but we spent all afternoon getting that tree off his house -- and he's looking at a $50,000 repair job easily - thank God for insurance. Lots of downed trees and downed power lines. My Admin's daughter attends college at Lamar in Beaumont - she'll probably be home for a couple of weeks as the Golden Triangle took the bulk of the Texas damage.
But, all is ok, nobody hurt, just some sore muscles and lots of clean-up to do. Thankfully, the business will be cranking at full speed tomorrow a.m.
Appreciate all the prayers and positive energy - I felt it yesterday. We effectively got a Cat. 2 hurricane through our city, it was no fun, lots of stress on everyone, but, again, we are all fine.
Any reports you hear regarding shelters shutting people out in Lufkin are totally false. I'll go into that more later, but I can tell you I saw day care centers, gymnastic centers and homeowners bringing total strangers into their places/homes -- which is totally ill-advised by the Red Cross. But, we had probably 3,000 stranded people here as the storm was bearing down.

We still have a large number of evacuees from Beaumont, Galveston and Houston in shelters. No gas available for them to go home. Most of ths city is still without power, hospitals are still on emergency generators. LISD has closed schools for Monday. We got hit pretty hard here in Lufkin, but not as bad as it could have been. Lots of downed trees so will take a little while to get it all cleaned up. Most businesses/schools will resume full operation on Tuesday. The commuity is really pulling together and we'll be back to normal fairly quickly!
Just glad this thing is over...Jasper, Lumberton, Silsbee, Port Athur/Beaumont really got nailed. The levees in Port Arthur held, which is good news for them.

Tyler and Tyler Area had 25-45 mph of wind and about 2 inches of rain. Our subdivision went off from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and everywhere inside Tyler had power and downtown had power too. We had some downed trees with alot of tree branches I mean its crazy. We still got school tommorow anyway because power always on in Tyler but the last time power went off was when the huge Ice Storm hit Tyler and made power off for a day in most places and some up to 3 days. Broadway in Tyler seems fine but alot of mess with power on anyway.
Nacgodoches was hit hard with 45,000 customer without power according to TXU. I think most places is powered up.

Just made a quick run out to grab some food - so I thought. This town is still struggling badly and I just realized it. No gas, no power, few places open for business - food/etc. - and we still have a population of around 60,000, instead of 35-40,000. I'm still hearing a constant flow of emergency vehicles with sirens on heading who knows where. There are probably only a handful of gas stations serving right now.
ET all the way down to Houston needs some major fuel suppliers to act quickly -- and who knows when 200,000 Golden Triangle folks can go home. Goodness knows towns hit hard like Jasper, Lufkin, etc. can't house these folks for weeks on end. I'm wondering at this point when Lufkin ISD has classes again.

Glad to hear it '08 - we're still waiting for power at home, but have it at work. Appears the TXU trucks are working hard today. Our freezer has about had it - lol - 36 hours and counting.

Just got our electricity back on but most of the neighborhood is still without power. Our electricity went out about 6:30am yesterday and just came back on at around 3pm today. Ours was one of the last three to go out in the neighborhood and two houses to the left of us never lost power. Other then that the rest of the neighborhood is still without power. We had the tops of trees blow off but did not hit the house or the cars. I have seen several business with some major damage and one of the churches had about 1/3 of the matal roof come off of the old sanctuary and sunday school wing. Obviously there are a lot of downed trees and power lines in different areas of town and several trees have landed on houses and cars. I don't know of any fatalities so far. I do know that it could have been worse if the storm had kept on the path that was originally predicted. We were fortunate in that aspect but it was not good for the people in Beaumont, Port Arthur and then up in to Jasper. Thanks too everyone on this board who has shown their concern and thanks for all the prayers.

Longview got 5 inches of rain, but I heard it was 3 at the airport. My mom is in Hawkins with my grandmother. My dad comes and goes from work and home. They lost electricity, but didn't get any water in the house. He's taking a generator from work to hook up their freezer and refrigerator. I guess their trees didn't blow down.
We still haven't heard from Scooter and that's a concern.

If Scooter stayed in Port Arthur he is definately without power and probably flooded, unless he moved out at the last minute. I do hope he is OK, he and many others down there need our prayers and our help to get them back through this time of devevstation on the Texas Gulf coast, East Texas and Western Louisiana.

Doesn't Scooter live in Wichita Falls or something...just FROM Port Author. I thought he posted yesterday about the damage in Port Author and also had said his family got out and that he finally got in touch with them. ??? Unless I dreamed all of that up. I think it's on the Hurricane Rita thread.

My mother caled this evening and they still have no power, so they are staying at some relatives house. She also said that the gas station they went to had some gas, but only letting everyone get $20 worth to make it fair to everyone. Its good to hear everyone seems to be ok!!! :)

Monday at 8:30 am-- still no power at our house, but power is on at work thank goodness since I own it. We stayed with friends last night. Supposed to be 98 here today -- getting quite concerned for the elderly -- it was around 87 in our house - will get hotter today. Gas tanks at 1/2 full - so ok there - but ready for this mess to be over -- and back to normal. I'm hearing no school until Wed. -- Silsbee, Woodville, Jasper and the Golden triangle are much worse off.

Thanks Drgnbkr! My in-laws in McKinney said the same thing. We actually only got about 3 inches- maybe 4 tops. I had my computers on desktops and unplugged - expecting flooding at the office - never happened -- wasn't concerned about home.
We finally got power at home about 11 am- a very welcome site - looking forward to crunching on a cube of ice for the first time in several days. Still concerned for the elderly in outlying areas that may not have power for several more days. Almost 100 here today as it is in all of Texas.
Lufkin ISD will reportedly have classes on Wednesday - teachers reporting tomorrow. Lots of kids roaming the streets today - not good for any kid with this much time on their hands.
Thanks again all.

Yeah, he lives in Wichita Falls. He works in the same building with me and I go talk to him a couple times a week. I knew his family was getting out, but I was hoping to hear how everybody else was doing in PA. I didn't know if he was going to have to go on emergency leave or not.

Yeah - the more remote the area, the longer it takes - generator sales are going quite well now I hear.
School back in Lufkin on Wed. -- assuming kids are practicing today - nice diversion for sure. Haven't heard on the game Saturday against Conroe - assume that will go on as planned as well.

Well we had a tree fall on our house but did not do bad damage because another tree broke the fall. We also had a gigantic tree fall in our front yard! No electricity yet we are at our parents house but they say it should be up by today. We were blessed and we are all ok and that is all that matters. Many had it really bad though!! My wife's grandparents had a tree almost split their house in half!! It is in the Lufkin paper twice today. My parents let several people stay with us from PA and they were extremely appreciative. I am glad we could help!! I have panther shirts on all of them!!LOL Lufkin was very lucky compared to other places like PA, Beaumont and Galveston. Crazy week i will tell you that. Still almost impossible to get gas. Oh, i was using the bathroom when the tree fell on the house right by the bathroom. LOL I was thinking what a way to go man!! :D Pack0808 dies on pot!! LMAO
By the way, I am very happy i missed the Iowa game Saturday!! LOL Looks like they were severely overrated. Strange, they had basically their whole team back besides the defensive line from a great team last year?? Oh well that is how it goes. Cowboys won but the Steelers lost so it was a pretty bad weekend for football. I was too tired to care anyways.

Glad to hear it Pack - very glad. Do your grandparents live in Englewood? I heard that area got hammered bad - and one home literally got split in half. Coach O lives in Englewood - hoping he and all the LISD staff are getting back on their feet.
Something to remind your kids about for sure. Your parents are great folks.

Well ty for the compliment on my parents. My grandparents live in Iowa so no they do not live in Englewood ;) It was my wife's grandparents!! They live in Brookhollow. They are very upset obviously. Last name is Hopson and their house is in the Lufkin paper in two different pics today. Check it out if you can. My sister lives in colonial hill on 58 and half their house is basically flooded. Brand new home too!! Somebody did a poor job on the roof!! They were the only one in the neighborhood that had that type of problem. Poor materials to say the least. We were there trying to put a huge tarp over it yesterday in the rain and wind. Glad to hear you are ok also!!

I think I saw your sister's house Pack - it did look bad. Oak Trace got slammed for some reason, I think maybe that wind came in hard in that area. I was helping a neighbor across the street Saturday with a ton of roof damage due to tree. Got drenched. Sorry about your wife's grparents house - that is hard on older folks.
