Southlake, it seems, has always had something of a special teams problem. Garrett Hartley was an incredible kicker, and Kevin Ortega isn't bad, but I'm referring to coverage and punting situations. Whether it's the punter, the punt returner, or any guy in between, most of the time we've had a hard time with it. I felt for James Allen last year, during a game when he just could Not get a hold of a punt over 20 yards. He's a great player and receiver, but it seems nobody is safe back there kicking. Eventually Chase Daniels kicked one off, and as I recall got a standing ovation for it. This year we've had Kevin Ortega doing most of the punting, and he hasn't seemed ot have much luck either. At the Fridge game, we had a new guy back there that really belted it down field, to the huge applause from the crowds, I'm just hoping he stays consistent for awhile. I've always felt special teams has been our weakness, in part or in whole, wondering if anyone out there though I was crazy or any updates on the special team changes...

yea the special teams is our weakness, more of our special team coverage, ortega can hit the field goals and kick off we all know that, after we had a new punter and saw him booming them i feel pretty good about that now, ryan murry is his name from what i was told, it seems when we kicked off and ortega didnt kick it out the endzone, theyd have big returns, im sure thats something coach dodge will adress this week, oh btw great to see a band fan, how about them saxophones!! :D

yeah ryan muurrryyyyyy is the punter. He is finally getting a chance after basically backing up Ortega for the past year. Although he was kicking with hurricane rita in his back, it was good to see him getting some pt and having a nice play. This could be one of those missing links that we have been searching for in the first couple of weeks. I am expecting murry to keep it up and continue punting for the rest of the year.

To say that Ortega is'nt bad is way understating it..he is one of the top 2 or 3 kickers in the state period. He has a fifty yarder and several 40+ yarders and has been increasing his kickoff depth steadily...coverage is one of the few weaknesses for Carroll...I think it's because the coaches don't use any of the regular starters on the coverage teams..Coach Dodge believes it's a way for the other players to contribute...I don't want to say anymore about the new punter..I might jinx him.... ;)

Also people underestimate our deep snapper Justin Drescher. This kid is one of the top snappers in the nation. He is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever seen.
