AUSTIN, Texas - Lady Bird Johnson, the former first lady who championed conservation and worked tenaciously for the political career of her husband, former President Lyndon B. Johnson, died Wednesday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 94.
Lady Bird Johnson returned home late last month after a week at Seton Medical Center, where she had been admitted for a low-grade fever. Her husband died in 1973.
She died at her Austin home of natural causes about 4:18 p.m. CDT. Elizabeth Christian, the spokeswoman, said she was surrounded by family and friends.

She spoke at my sister's graduation about ten years ago and a was mesmerizing speaker, even at 84. Wonderful human being with an extraordinary spirit. Rest in peace Lady Bird. My thoughts & prayers go out to the family.

Wow - what a lady. You see wildflowers and you think of her.
I was in 5th grade when LBJ died - school was closed for one day. That was a longggg time ago.

She was a good woman. I feel bad that she was married to LBJ, though. She sure enough deserved better than that.

To be the kind of person who sees beauty in both the red, red, rose and the pink-flowered weed on the side of the road is truly a blessing.
God keep you, Lady Bird, and comfort your family as they mourn your loss and celebrate a life well and truly lived.

Interesting Fact. The article I read tonight said that Lady Bird was valedictorian of her high school class but turned it down because she was afraid (at that time) to speak in public. She must have conquered that fear. :)

I was in 2nd grade when he became President after the JFK assassination.
You're just a Spring chicken.
Lady Bird was definitely Lyndon's better half.

I don't know. I bet Kennedy had better looking women, though.
Lady Bird once said she didn't care if LBJ cheated as long as he loved her. That's some kind of dedication.
As far as Kennedy goes, I figure he had a normal high-profile marriage where the wife sticks around and enjoys the benefits while the husband plays.

She didn't like public speaking, but overcame it when LBJ entered politics because she wanted to help him get elected. She was a big reason for him getting a good foothold in politics to start with.
