I don't think it's overrated at all. Overpriced? Yes. But even then, for a device that holds 2 - 3 gigs of music (which is more than enough for the mostly random times you will be using it), full service internet (not the mobile kind), 2 mega pixel camera, and of course phone, I think it's a pretty decent buy.
Once sprint gets them, I will probably buy one, and maybe when the price drops a couple hundred.

This woman at work was going on and on about getting her stupid I Phone - she asked if I was getting one and I told her my Nokia works just fine. As long as I can a) talk to someone on my phone and receive calls and b) have the ability to text at least 200 times during any given football game to my Katy and Cy Fair friends then that phone is good to go:D

Well... I have to admit I'm a Mac guy and I would have bought one if I could have signed on with T-Mobile...
Now, those of you who know me know... I will only stand in line for Katy games so I wouldn't be in the first wave, but maybe the second... Oh wait, I have kids... They could have stood in line... Damn...
Jobs has done a pretty good job (no pun intended) of turning the tech world on it's ear... He was right with the multi-colored iMac (everything became multi-colored and they sold a ton of Macs), he's right on with the Intel Mac (run everyting on one computer... Windows/OS X/Linux...) and he was dead on with the iPod (You know you either have one or want one)...
I expect the iPhone will change some things... It's a little to early to tell what or how... It's a pretty cool device with some really breakthrough technologies...
The next version of OS X is pretty cool too... Star Treks not far away, Captain...

I bought mine and set it free in the house last night. The laundry, dishes and vacuuming all got done. It cooked dinner, took out the trash, and tucked me in when I when to bed...;)
I don't buy stuff usually until it's been out for a while. i still haven't bought the Fusion Razor with 88 blades because it's too damn expensive! My method lets them work out the kinks and lower the price. So I'm not cutting edge...well at least I'm not wasting my money on crap like that. Afer all this time, I still prefer booze and women...:D (translation- I get a case of beer every once in a while, and the wife spends my money for me!:D )

06-30-2007, 06:58 AM
Yeah... I have to make this stuff work for my clients... Fun job... I'll also usually wait until the kinks are at least figured out... Saves me time and my customers a little money... Right now I have a T-Mobile Dash... It's replaced my laptop in my truck and I use if for email, internet (for 5A of course), traffic reports (I drive a lot around Houston), weather (to know where not to drive) and a bunch of other stuff... Yep, I'm an old geek... And my wife doesn't care what I do as long as I come home by dark and bring in the dough...:D

I think after you buy all the accessories you're going to be out of almost $1,000!! For a telephone?! Those things are too expensive and take too much eye focus to operate. You just wait...in a couple of months traffic accidents due to people playing with these things while driving will soar.
By Christmas they will be under $250.

Well, yes, the I-Phone is being hyped up like it's the best thing since sliced bread...however, people do have a need for the features.
I don't care if people think I'm ridiculous because I spent $400 on my Palm Treo. I use it for Xcel, Word Processing, Web Browsing, Video, E-mail to keep up what's going on in the workplace. The QWERTY board is a necessity. I can't carry a laptop everywhere I go, so this phone is extremely useful to me. Plus, in the event I decide to actually use it as a music player, I can. Just store some of the songs I have on my computer on a SD card. Put the SD card in my phone. Music to listen to with the Media Player.
I can't hate anybody for paying a lot of money for a phone. Just people need to slow down and see if the Phone is worth the hype or if it's worth it at all.
I'm not too keen on a full-touchscreen keyboard though.

When the LG Chocolate came out I wanted one. It was for Verizon only too so that helped me a lot cuz i had verizon already. But i didn't get one for a while. And lucky me because the first ones didnt have speakerphone, they didn't have a few other features that they do now. PLUS there were problems with them. I expect the same out of the Iphone. Now, i doubt it's missing anything any other phone has, but it will have problems. People will complain, it will get bad reviews, then Apple will fix it and they will sell again like hotcakes

overrated in a few areas...the battery life is only estimated at around 5 hours, the virtual keyboard is a nightmare, the glass that is so infamously known for scratching on ipods is still in use on the iphone, and for cingular users it will be using the edge network (nortoriously slow)...then factor in that it's 500 bucks for the cheaper version.

Like everything Apple does... It's a bridge to the next level of technology... Just like when they "borrowed" the GUI... Or dropped the floppy for CD... Or the CRT for Flat... Or the Motorola for Intel... Sometimes they are way ahead of the curve... Newton and Voice Recognition... They always push the envelope and drag the rest of the industry with them... This is just the next thing on the list...

No, how many?
Have you ever opened a Mac and looked at how it's built... I've seen both and not one PC (HP/Dell/Sony/Toshiba/You Pick it) even comes close to the quality of design or workmanship that is put into a G5 Intel... The ONLY thing the PC world has over the current Mac product is MARKET SHARE and GAMES...
But wait, now you can run ALL of your PC software on a Mac... So I guess it's just market share...
Do you know how many IT people rely on the failure of PC's to keep their job? Virus attacks... Spyware... A bunch... Many of my customers have PC IT guys on staff just to keep the things running... Have you seen OS X? Have you seen Leopard? How about Vista? Do you know how easy it is to connect a Mac, any Mac, to a networked printer? Not one with a PC for a print server, but a simple printer hanging on an ethernet network...
I could go on and on... But you already know that...;)

Everyone loves to say Macs can't get viruses. As Macs get more and more popular and they take a larger portion of market share, there will be viruses.
rwilleby
06-30-2007, 07:44 PM
Okay, on the virus thing... Do you really thing Jobs hasn't thought about them? The number one problem in the PC world and he's just gonna look past it... Come on, if you believe that then you really don't know much about Jobs...
Second point... Don't you think one of the "Virus Guys" would want to be the first one to get the Mac with a REAL virus... Their whole world is based on attention... I am not aware of any true virus that has attacked OS X... There was something about a hook into iChat, I believe... It wasn't a very big deal...
Will it happen, sure... Will it be easy, nope... Until that time, we'll just truck along enjoying the virus-free computing world... I honestly don't know why you PC folks put up with that crap...
Oh, I love this commercial...

Yeah, here are some specs on the battery life from apple.com:
Power and battery
Built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery
Talk time: Up to 8 hours
Standby time: Up to 250 hours
Internet use: Up to 6 hours
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours
Of course, that could just be an example of the "liberal media" in action.
Yes, it's true the iphone searches out wi-fi and defaults to it over EDGE anywhere wi-fi is available, which enables users to surf the net and talk on the phone at the same time.
It is true the intelligent keyboard may take about a week to get used to I hear, maybe longer for certain individuals. It is similar perhaps to the Blackberry Pearl in that regard, only it it has software that predicts and corrects what you are typing based on your past tendencies and entries.
The iphone has a special scratch-resistant glass surface.

1) But I must say that the AT&T part is what turned me away at first... I'm not changing from T-Mobile for anything...
2) The the newness of it... Let someone figure out the problems first...

I just don't like seeing people talking out of their @$$. Why does it not shock me at all that the iphone would be a big enough glamor and status issue up there as to generate smear posts from the neighborhood "have-nots?"

Using this phone is going to hurt someone's wallet a lot farther down the line than just the initial purchase, imo. If someone has the money to surf the internet, look at YouTube and talk on the phone all day, by all means, get this phone, but its completely unnecessary.
Apple got insanely lucky with what they got in the iPod, and honestly I dont like people around that brag about how awesome it is, like a certain individual on this board.

Happy Customers?
That never, ever, ever, ever, shut up.
Wanna know why people dont buy apple products? Because they see what apple turns people in to.

iPhone turns 4: Early predictions rewound
Four years ago, Apple's first iPhone went on sale, a benchmark that comes at a time when all eyes are on the company to announce a fifth-generation of the device.
It's easy to look back at the iPhone's rise and success and see how it's managed to work out so well: Apple took aim at a product category with the same approach it used with the iPod, creating its own hardware and software, then eventually bundling it with extra services and features. Proof enough of that is the App Store, something that began with Apple's mobile devices, and has since jumped across to the company's computers with the Mac App Store.
But when the original iPhone was announced, many wrote it off before it even hit store shelves. There were issues like the price, the hardware, the feature set, and what carrier Apple was going with. But more than anything it was just the doubt that the company could venture into new territory with all these variables and find success.
The iPhone has gone on to become a company-defining product, transforming Apple's image of a computer maker with a hit portable music player and booming music service into a major player in an industry it merely dabbled in as an unsuccessful partner with Motorola just years before. In Apple's most recent fiscal quarter, the iPhone made up around half of the company's monster revenue. It's also had an impact on other Apple products, spilling out design ideologies to Apple's Mac OS X operating system, and the company's notebook computers.
Below are a smattering of predictions from pundits (including us), along with Apple competitors, all placing bets on where the product would land with consumers and the market ahead of its announcement and eventual release.
Ahead of Apple's iPhone unveiling
December 7, 2006
CNET's own Michael Kanellos (now of Greentech Media) calling Apple's phone a "flop"a month ahead of its unveiling:
Sales for the phone will skyrocket initially. However, things will calm down, and the Apple phone will take its place on the shelves with the random video cameras, cell phones, wireless routers and other would-be hits. Remember the Mac Mini? It was supposed to ignite a revolution for small computers. It didn't. The flat-panel iMac? Some predicted that Apple's price tag would drive other prices higher. Whoops.
Why won't the Apple phone succeed? It will be a great piece of hardware that, if I wasn't the cheapest man in North America, I might buy. The entire strategy, however, is based on what I call "iPod magic." Apple succeeded with the iPod, the theory goes. Therefore, they can break into other categories and turn them upside down.
December 23, 2006
Bill Ray of The Register speculates:
Apple will launch a mobile phone in January, and it will become available during 2007. It will be a lovely bit of kit, a pleasure to behold, and its limited functionality will be easy to access and use.
The Apple phone will be exclusive to one of the major networks in each territory and some customers will switch networks just to get it, but not as many as had been hoped.
As customers start to realise that the competition offers better functionality at a lower price, by negotiating a better subsidy, sales will stagnate. After a year a new version will be launched, but it will lack the innovation of the first and quickly vanish.
January 9, 2007
John Gruber of Daring Fireball on the eve of the iPhone's unveiling:
Even just a few days ago, I did not expect to see Apple announce a phone this week. But over the weekend I flip-flopped, and I now think it's more likely than not. Not a VOIP phone that depends on Wi-Fi or anything like that, but an honest-to-god mobile phone. It seems like there has to be some sort of "Wow, I thought maybe Apple would announce a phone but I didn't think they'd do it like this!" factor, but damned if anyone knows what it is. My wild unlikely-but-wouldn't-it-be-cool-as-s**t guess: that it's not an iPod phone, but rather the introduction of a new mobile device OS.
Post-announcement
January 11, 2007
In a reactionary preview post-iPhone unveiling, David Pogue of The New York Times writes:
What [Apple] does have, however, is a real shot at redefining the cellphone. How many millions of people are, at this moment, carrying around both an iPod and a cellphone? How many would love to carry a single combo device that imposes no feature or design penalties? Considering that the cellphone is many people's most personal gadget, how many would leap at the chance to replace their current awkward models with something with the class, the looks and the effortlessness of an iPod?
February 26, 2007
David Haskin of Computerworld in a piece comparing the iPhone to Apple's failed Newton device, wrote:
I'm more convinced than ever that, after an initial frenzy of publicity and sales to early adopters, iPhone sales will be unspectacular. If Apple doesn't respond quickly by lowering the price and making nice to AT&T, which surely will be ticked off, iPhone may well become Apple's next Newton. Remember that two years after Newton was introduced, a smaller, cheaper PDA appeared -- the Palm Pilot -- which truly did rock the world.

John Dvorak writing for Marketwatch in a story titled "Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone," wrote:
There is no likelihood that Apple can be successful in a business this competitive. Even in the business where it is a clear pioneer, the personal computer, it had to compete with Microsoft and can only sustain a 5 percent market share.
April 30, 2007
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer speaking to USA Today's David Lieberman in an interview brings up market share and software saturation:
There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60 percent or 70 percent or 80 percent of them, than I would to have 2 percent or 3 percent, which is what Apple might get."
May 10, 2007
While at the Software 2007 conference answering a question about how the company would deal with Apple's entrance into the mobile phone business, Motorola CEO Ed Zander famously quipped back "how do they deal with us?"
June 7, 2007
In his Crunchgear column, Seth Porges laid out ways in which the iPhone "will bomb" but pays special attention to the fact that the product will be rushed to market with buggy software:
"Until June 29, it's hard to tell too much about the iPhone, but I can tell you with near-certainty one thing: the product was almost certainly rushed to market before Apple's engineers would have liked."
June 17, 2007
New York Magazine writer John Heilemann in a feature story about Apple CEO Steve Jobs, makes predictions about sales of the iPhone:
Of course, if the iPhone is a runaway success, Jobs won't have to surrender anything--and it very well may be. Less than two weeks from now, when the phone hits the streets, the consumerist pandemonium will likely be hysterical. Once again, Jobs may have fashioned a totemic object that will capture the culture--and cause rival CEOs to have coronary events.
June 21, 2007
Providing a contrarian opinion to Heilemann (though indirectly), author David Platt once again uses the f-word (flop), while bringing in the movie references:
The forthcoming (June 29) release of the Apple iPhone is going to be a bigger marketing flop than Ishtar and Waterworld (dating myself again, aren't I) combined. And it's not for reasons of price, or limited cell carrier options, or lack of corporate IT support, which are the mainstream media's main caveats when they review it. (See the June 19 issue of the Wall Street Journal for the latter).
Instead, the iPhone is going to fail because its design is fundamentally flawed. The designers and technophiles who encouraged development of the iPhone have fallen into the trap of all overreaching hardware and software designers; thinking that their users are like themselves. As I expound in great detail in my book Why Software Sucks your user is not you. The iPhone's designers have forgotten this fundamental law of the universe. The market will severely punish them for doing so."
June 23, 2007
Bill Plummer, VP of Nokia's multimedia group in North America, gets quoted in a New York Times story by Matt Richtel saying the iPhone "is an evolution of the status quo." In that same interview, Mike Lanman, the chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless is quoted as saying: "For Apple, I think the big risk is the AT&T network."

4 years, why can't they come up with something better than "If you don't have an IPhone, you don't have an IPhone."

My three year old grand daughter was sitting in her living room and said, in her three year old voice...
"If you don't have an IPhone, well, you don't have an IPhone and if you do have an IPhone then you do have an IPhone."
Three years old... Funny she's not repeating any RIM, Motorola, HTC, et al commercials... Yep, their advertising sucks...
