Bryan game postponed

The Bryan High varsity football game at Belton has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. because of travel issues associated with Hurricane Rita. The teams were originally scheduled to play Friday at 7:30 p.m., but had moved the time up to 6 p.m.
With the roadways becoming loaded with traffic from evacuees fleeing the impending storm, Bryan officials decided to try and get Belton to agree to playing Thursday instead.
"The first thing we thought about was calling yesterday [Wednesday] and saying we should take all the guess work out of it and play like everybody else on Thursday night," Bryan assistant athletic director Harry Francis Jr., said. gWe asked for that and the home team did not want to do that.
"The next thing we asked the superintendent to do is, if we can't do that, at least move the game up to 6 so if we have lightning delays or things like that we don't get home later.
"When we saw things escalate even more, we decided we were going to go back to them again this morning [to try and get them to agree to play Thursday]. It was a very muddled, but we worked the hole way for Thursday."
With the teams at an impasse on when to play, Bryan superintendent Mike Cargill and Belton superintendent Vivian Baker made the final decision.
"It came down to an issue of travel," Francis said. "TxDOT was talking about roads being crowded and possible routes being changed, so it was pretty much directed through the two superintendents that we would not play Thursday night so the game would be pushed to Monday."
Bryan head coach Marvin Sedberry said he would have to preferred to get the game in this week, but he and his players will handle the change.
"I would have rather played today [Thursday]. My first choice would have been to play Friday as we were supposed to play, but we have no control over that.
"I just deal with it and go on."
Moving the game to Monday will have a trickle-down effect and will force the Vikings to move next week's game with Copperas Cove as well.
Because of a University Interscholastic League rule that mandates five days between games, Bryan and Copperas Cove will not be able to play until Oct. 1.
"The thing you don't want to do is play Monday and then turn around and play a game on Saturday," Sedberry said. "That's pretty much the situation we are in right now."
The time for the Copperas Cove game has not been set, but Sedberry said he would like to play it at 7 p.m.
"I haven't talked to them [Copperas Cove] about that," Sedberry said. "I don't think there will be an issue with Copperas Cove, they'll understand what the deal is."
