Since they run similar offenses it only makes sense. Leach has a way of making his QB's look good. He will be exciting to watch on Saturday afternoons.

I'm telling you guys, Tech is getting closer to being a national powerhouse.

The problem is, they seem to compete with the powers and struggle against the lesser opponents.

Texas Tech is only scoring 80 points a game because they are playing weak D-IAA teams. It's no different than a major league team in baseball playing a minor league team, or a 5A team taking on a 3A team in high school ball.
By the way, it seems as if 80% of our graduating class last year went to Texas Tech. That is why we call it Bell University.

Yeah also the reason that they score 80 a game is becasue there offense is ridiculous. I was at the "press conference" and was present when Greg announced his intention to go to Tech and i expect him to make some noise out there with his play on the field.
Do you guys think that both QB's (Mac and Potts) will be in Lubbock at this time next year?

I think Graham Harrell will be throwing the football for TT next year or 2.

Yeah I agree. But I would be suprised if both Potts and McElroy went to TTU. Someone will have to de-committ.

As I'm sitting in my dorm room here at the fine campus of Texas Tech this is great news even though we already have a few QB's on hand. Just one more to hand off leadership of the annual beating of the aggies.

It sounded like with the red-shirt sophomore qb at Tech transferring that Mcelroy may not be grey shirting after all at Tech -- wonder how Potts feels about that -- if that is the case, I would not be surprised to see him maybe looking elsewhere -- maybe UT --

McElroy makes his decision
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian Stumpf
StudentSportsFootball.com Recruiting Analyst
While most top recruits draw the attention of major college football programs with prolific sophomore and junior seasons, Southlake Carroll's Greg McElroy didn't get that opportunity.
Greg McElroy was the top performer at both the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout and NIKE Camp in Texas this spring
However, the 6-2, 215 pound quarterback was able to make the rounds through the spring camp circuit and by the time summer came, McElroy had his choice of offers despite throwing just 30 passes as a junior.
Today, McElroy announced his college decision with friends, family and teammates around him at Po' Melvin's restaurant in nearby Irving.
"I'm going to Texas Tech - I'm going to be a Red Raider."
Student Sports had an opportunity to speak with McElroy Wednesday night before he made his decision, and the senior was happy to get the process over with and focus on leading his team to a second straight Class 5A Division II state title.
"(Southlake Carroll) Coach Dodge has been pushing me to make a decision the past few weeks, and ultimately when it came down to it, I think Texas Tech is the best place for me," stated McElroy.
"The offense that Tech runs is a perfect fit for me, with the similarities between what they do and what we do at Southlake Carroll - the plays are practically identical and I think it's a system that fits my abilities very well."
Rivals.com
Greg McElroy has shone as a senior, throwing for over 800 yards and 10 TDs through three games
McElroy's abilities were on display this spring and summer at numerous camps as he tried to gain the attention of college coaches after spending the past two years as the backup at Carroll.
The strategy worked as McElroy's impressive showings earned offers from Texas Tech, TCU, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Stanford and several others.
McElroy said in the end his decision came down to four schools - Tech, UNC, TCU and Stanford.
"More than anything I went to where I felt the most wanted. Texas Tech was my first letter, they've been on me for the longest time, and it just feels like family."
There was a thought that Texas, still in need of a pocket-passer at quarterback, might come in once McElroy's season started. What ended up happening there?
"There was a lot of communication with Texas but after looking at the whole situation and what they were looking for at the position I just didn't think I would be a good fit there," explained McElroy.
While waiting to takeover the starting job for two years while current Missouri freshman QB Chase Daniel completed his eligibility, McElroy did not loaf or sulk, he studied and trained as best he could so he'd be ready when he got his chance.
So far this fall, McElroy has made the most of his playing time, leading Carroll out of the gate with a 3-0 start as the Dragons continue to hold down the No. 1 spot in the Student Sports FAB 50 National Rankings.
Through three games, McElroy has hit 63 of 96 passes for 862 yards with 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions while also rushing for 111 yards and a score.
McElroy's strong showing at camps this spring led many to believe he was among the nation's top quarterback prospects despite his lack of playing time and his play on the field thus far this fall has only reinforced his status.
Another highly-regarded quarterback Taylor Potts out of Abilene High, has already committed to Texas Tech and the Red Raiders also have a redshirt-freshman QB on the roster by the name of Graham Harrell, who set numerous high school records while playing at Ennis High.
How does McElroy approach the competition that he'll face for playing time at Texas Tech?
"Anywhere you go there will be competition. I'm confident in my abilities and looking forward to learning from Graham and competing with Taylor and hopefully competing with Graham as well after a redshirt season."
Right now McElroy is happy to be a Red Raider and looking forward to the rest of his senior year and leading his team to another state title.

Good to hear he is going to a Texas school that I acually like. However, it could be the same case as it was in high school. Harrell will be the starter for the next 3 years, leaving Mc only a year or two. That is if Harrell stays healthy. He had like 200 yards passing last week late in the game, and his stats were very good.

Potts was promised to be the only qb that Tech would take -- he committed early based on that promise -- on the surface, Leach has gone back on that committment -- wouldn't be surpised if Potts goes elsewhere --

They said the same thing for the Missouri situation where Daniel is the backup as a true freshman..Mc will be fine...coaches go with the best player...not the biggest name...

For what it is worth, my prognostication is that if McElroy has a great year, he will de-commit and go with Stanford where he can focus on getting a great education. He wasn't feeling loved by them, but that would all change if he lights it up for the rest of the year.
Just my opinion/theory.

Why does everyone think Taylor Potts could not beat out McElroy? If they both went to Tech and stayed all 4-5 years, I think Potts has more than a fair shot at being the man after Harrell.

If you read any of the results from the Nike/Elite 11 camps....Taylor was a distant 5th overall.....McElroy was number one.....there is a reason why Mike Leach coveted McElroy...and only he knows why.....

and Robert Johnson was the number 1 QB coming out of the Juco ranks a few years ago and now Cody Hodges is the starter. If you have seen Potts play, I think he is just as good a QB as McElroy, he won't lay down for McElroy and vice versa, should be a great battle for the starting job the next few years.

like you said earlier, only Leach knows, however he offered Potts as well, so he has seen something in Taylor that he likes. The big thing for Tech is going to be holding onto Leach, I have a feeling after this year that some pretty big schools will be coming after Mike Leach and offering him some big money, I hope Tech can keep him.

No disrespect but I dont think Harrell had a big name. Mc however is more of a "big name" than Harrell. The coaches will go with the best player, and based on what I have seen that is G.H. He is already playing and doing fine. When he is gone Mc will get his shot. Harrell is not a big name, he is a good QB. I have worked camps that he attened and he is very good. He also did a fine job last week.

Going into his senior year he had a very big name, he holds just about every state passing record, and was a sought after QB.
I do agree with you on him being the future QB in Lubbock, I also think he will break plenty of KK school records as well as Jungs NCAA passing records, this kid is that good.

Graham Harrell was rated the #1 High school QB in the nation by some. He was also rated 1st team Parade All-American. Now, I'm not huge into ratings but Graham Harrell is a very good QB and the one thing that he has going for him besides have the God-Given talent is that he grew up in a system very similiar to Texas Tech.
It was almost like just switching helmets from a Ennis helmet to Tx Tech helmet but the offensive plays didnt change much. Graham Harrell has even stated that his High School offense was more advanced overall.
Not saying that McElroy cant compete.. just saying that it aint going to be easy. In fact many believed that Harrell would of been the starter this season if he didnt get hurt during Spring football. He was already on par with Cody Hodges ( who I think is a very good QB).

Believe McElroy will be not only a welcome but valuable addition to the Tech juggernaut. We were sorry to lose him as was the SEC competition. Sources indicate McElroy felt he was being jerked around and had had enough...guess he had. Feel he is a perfect fit for the Tech offense. Not a slow study he will have it down in minimum time...then will come the experience buildup. Note he has 862 yds/3 games/66% completion....all while playing less than 9 quarters total ...which we consider another interesting/dumb phenomena. He will continue to gain valuable experience in the like offense. Predict young Mcelroy will start for two seasons…unless God forbid, Harrell goes down. Potts is a fine young man and athlete, but most folks in the recruitment business believe he, as well as at least two other big names in DFW metroplex, have maxed out. Leach differs w/us on Potts...but does he? Potts has not played in an offense like Carroll or Tech…so we’ll see. If I were he believe I would be looking elsewhere…or plan on playing another position at Tech. He would make a great tight end. Best wishes to the very classy McElroy family and young scholar/athlete Greg. Go Dragons!

As far as I am concerned the game hasn't been played yet. And playing teams like Tarrant County Junior College really won't help against Big 12 competition either because those teams are miles better.

Kliff Kingsberry did not play in a offense like SLC or Ennis and all he did was shatter the record books while at Tech.
All Taylor Potts has done was complete over 60% of his passes last season, throw 5 int's and QB a team that gave a very good Carroll team all they could handle and almost beat them. I do not know his stats this year, but the kid is a very good QB, he has more experience than McElroy and more speed, I believe he is a bigger kid and due to the illness of his mother last year, he gained some mental toughness that not everyone has. Like I have stated, it would not shock me one bit when the time came, if Taylor Potts was the starter once Graham Harrell is done.
