Enjoy - sad but true, I remember the great majority of these things and, even sadder, I miss them and wish my kids could have experienced life before Ipods/computers/video games, etc.

Just to add my thoughts on some items:
Firefly's- yes, we caught them in jars but we also chased Horned toads until they spit blood at us (I was a tomboy!)
TV warming up - what about the dot that wouldn't go away when you turned it off?
Penny candy - with $1 I could get 3 Tiger Beats (or 7 comic books) and 25 pieces of candy
Named phone number - ours was Homestead!
Jiffy Pop - better than microwave ANY day and more fun to make
Green Stamps - God I loved collecting those and going to the green stamp store in the Heights.
PF Fliers - don't forget Keds!! That was it for sneakers - oh Chuck Taylors too
Milk in a bottle - we had it delivered to our door two days a week.

Penny candy - with $1 I could get 3 Tiger Beats (or 7 comic books) and 25 pieces of candy We would walk to the 7-11 at Wycliffe and Memorial and buy Icees and a hand full of pixie stix and get change from a dollar!
Named phone number - ours was Homestead! Ours too, and when you wanted to make a long distance call you had to talk to an operator..
Jiffy Pop - better than microwave ANY day and more fun to make Our dad made it in a big kettle most of the time, Jiffy pop was a treat for us...:o
Green Stamps - God I loved collecting those and going to the green stamp store in the Heights. I had forgotten about those.
PF Fliers - don't forget Keds!! That was it for sneakers - oh Chuck Taylors too I don't remember Chuck Taylors, but summers we lived in US KEDS
Milk in a bottle - we had it delivered to our door two days a week.My older sister and I used to take turns licking the cream off the cardboard cap on the bottle...;)

Remember when you only had 2-3 TV channels and they went off the air after 12.
Also playing outside all day and not having to check in until after dark.
I remember playing flashlight tag in neighbor hood, lived on base in Virginia, the area were called courts kind of like 5 townhouse buildings with 5 families in each parking was in the middle and that is where we played it.
Kids nowadays have no idea what it is like to play outside.

We played outside from sunrise until the bats started flying in on us. We climbed trees (i fell out of a few) - we rode bikes, we chased each other, played tag, army and in my case Lost in Space which was huge at the time and we had a giant tree that we used as a spaceship. What happened to those imaginations??? You see 8 year old girls wearing make up and trying to look like Britney Spears these days and all have a cell phone. When I was 8, I had scratched up knees and ran for 8 hours straight and my parents usually didn't know whose house I was at but they didn't worry because there were no stranger dangers for the most part and all the adults watched after all the kids - we have over 35 kids just on my street which was about 2 blocks long!! Everyone had big families.
And as far as the TV goes, once it went off (usually around midnight) that was it for TV. I would turn on the radio at that point and listen to music or the horror stories they would tell (like Creature Features). Speaking of Creature Features - that was usually a triple feature on Saturday nights - old horror films like Dracula. I never missed them or Science Fiction Theatre...what a nerdo!!

I did the same thing, but it wasn't too long ago. There was a Bush in the Oval Office after all. We lived on the edge of the base and all the neighborhood kids would come and play in the big fields behind my house. We would also play neighborhood hide and seek, and when I say neighborhood, I mean the whole damn thing. We would have 30 kids stretched out over 20 square blocks. We would get up on Saturdays at the crack of dawn, eat cereal and watch cartoons. As soon as they were over, we would go outside and most of the time we wouldn't return until the street lights came on around 8 pm.
We also used to have a lot of fun during the hot Summer days. Aside from being able to ride our bikes to the base pool (one of the best pools ever) we all had the slip'n'slides and more water guns than we knew what to do with. Those were the days.

I remember saturday morning being the ONLY time cartoons came on, and from 7 to noon, you could count on that being on out TV.(If ESPN had existed, this would have changed for me)
What about B&W TV's with rabbit ears and 2 dials, one VHF and one UHF?
anybody remember Traxx, the store brand tennies from Kmart?:puke
electric football( Monday Night Version was the ultimate)
S&H green stamps- we'd sit and run them over a wet sponge and fill pages and pages of those books, then our Mom and G'ma would take us to get a croquet set or something to get us out of the house!( Then we'd be out in the yard trying to drive the croquet balls like Jack Nicklaus.)
How many of you really sent off for those seahorse farm offers in the comic books? LOL!!!
we would fill the car up with gas or go in and buy Dad's cigarettes- when we were 10! honest.
people drank water from the faucet( not a bottle)
lots of people did lay-a-way.
stainless steel salad dressing servers with 3 or four bowls on them containing Bleu Cheese, Thousand Island, French, and Italian dressing. Restaurants didn't serve Ranch. You had to make it in a bottle at home.
Fruits and veggies were seasonal, even at the grocery store.
Kids had manners.
Adults had manners, and the backbone to correct their kids.
People could do math in their heads
We almost always had a pocketknife in our pocket at school, and the high school boys had guns in the racks of the pickups on school property.
We bought paint for painting...:D
ABC's Wide World of Sports with Howard Cosell. I loved the boxing!

I remember the blue law. I needed to buy some manila folders for school and I couldn't because of the blue law. I thought it had to be the craziest thing I'd ever heard of in my life.

we would fill the car up with gas or go in and buy Dad's cigarettes- when we were 10! honest. I used to go buy my dad's cigarettes so I could get comic books with the leftover money - never smoked though - just bought them at the age of 10, 11, 12, etc

We almost always had a pocketknife in our pocket at school, and the high school boys had guns in the racks of the pickups on school property. Yep, and not one of those kids ran through a school shooting anyone - they were too scared of the authority figures
We bought paint for painting...
ABC's Wide World of Sports with Howard Cosell. I loved the boxing! I love Wide World and liked Jim McKay too and the fact that the Olympics were AMATUERS only!

I always thought it was cool to watch a college or pro game and see huge sections of the stands start advertising with color cards.
Remeber the high/low beam switch on your car being on the floorboard?
Pretty much evryone wrote with a #2 pencil since ink pens weren't that popular.
Lifting the hood of your car/truck and seeing nothing but ENGINE!
Amonia Blueprints!! (Whew!!)
Movie projectors & slideshows for home entertainment.
PONG!!
Being on a road trip and passing up a gas station that advertised .32 cents a gallon because it was too expensive!!!
When a hamburger at McDonalds was .10 cents.
Kids these days would run away from home if they had to cut grass with a "rotary blade" LOL :puke

OMG sadly I remember almso all of the names under that list at the end. PF Fliers my mom gave me like 5 pairs when I was a kid because she wanted to "plan ahead" And chucks are one of the great long lasting shoes of all time.
Also another thing you might remember was drive in movies but not like today where it's one screen but 3 or 4 screens (Gosh i miss killeen..me and my bro walked 10 minutes up the road and payed a car pulling in 10 bucks to let us ride in with them because they counted by the car and not the number of people it was great.)

Kids nowadays have no idea what it is like to play outside.
Whoa a few years ago I would sit in tis empty lot near my house and like 12 or 13 of my friends would fix it up and we made one of the all time greatest things ( Fat Albert style). We set up piles of cement blocks for soccer coals and wood for the top, we had bases from home and played baseball, soccer, and wooden goal posts from football. If taht's not playing outside I don't know what is. I remember playing piggy want a signal and hide and go seek outside for hours or until the po po came and told us to get in
Kids had manners.
these days little 4 or 5 year olds come up to me and try to fight me and start throwing punches so I sit there and laugh.
Adults had manners, and the backbone to correct their kids.
Most miltary adults ideas of correcting the kids is beatng them and kicking them out for the night.:(

Thanks god for calculators.
