Hoss, maybe how people gauge places to eat, may be relative to where they lived. I would expect the gulf coast to have the greatest seafood. Nebraska and points east would have great steaks and ect. This won't hold true in all cases I've found, but in general. Mass. and Virginia could take lessons from Kema, Galveston, Corpus and Houston on the art of seafood. Ham, biscuits-gravy and meatloaf in Virginia you would think would be tops. Wrong, better at Furrs or Doby's here in Odessa. With that in mind you might think Odessa would have the best fried rattle snake or sand crabs in the nation. Well, they might, I couldn't say.
In answer to you question lets go strickly to sit down places but eleminate the chains like Logans, Outback, Cotton Patch, Texas Road House and ect. If for no other reason you can't sit and talk football without hearing from the next table how someone is recovering from their latest bout with gout. I also won't refer to Mitlan frankly because
So lets start with Mexican food. Odessa is loaded with the absolute best Mexican food in the world thats a promise. Your type beans will be found here.
Jorges in the Santa Fe Square on 42nd suits my needs and I always have a guilty feeling when I leave. Gee whiz I know their beef tacos must be fried in pure Mrs. Tuckers lard. No mamsy pamsy here. Assure your triglicerides will double.
La Bodega on 7th (I'm sure they were here when you were here.) A little different style, maybe from Central America. But good!
Delicias on west 8th. This has got to be true Mexico. I don't know what most of it is. You might say it looks foriegn But a lot of people with Spanish genes eat here. Really, come to think of it a lot of people with Spanish genes eat everwhere.
Steaks and Seafood I'll serve together. If I wanted steak tonight it would be T Bar B on W. University and West county Rd., The Barn Door( You should know of this place.) it's good. I've had better but I've also never been let down there. Osaka on John Ben Sheppard (a shogun or Benni haha clone) is excellent for steaks. or Oriental stuff.
The Owner of Music City Mall purchased the old Hilton Hotel and turned it into a 4 star hotel, The Elegante. Kinda unlike Odessa. But it contains a great seafood- Steak place called the Shrimpboat. Beautiful quite atmosphere.
Itilian, maybe Zucchi's on JBS Parkway. Watch out for knives.
A place called Sam & Harry's just off of Du Pont Sq. (DON"T ASK) in Washington D. C. I consider the standard in reguard to steaks. C J or PJ Changes in Vegas would be my standard in Chinese and at one time your own Flying Dutchman in Kema for seafood. Don't look for those in Odessa but even out here in the neverlands we can get just as fat as anyone.
Oh yeah for BBQ, not here since Johnny's sunk the others are just ok. Go on to Mitlan.

Some of those places are definitely new.
I've eaten at the Barn Door. Used to date the former owner's wife before they were married ;) There was a place at one time called the Oil Patch that wasn't bad.
As for Mexican, I've been to Manuels. I think maybe LaBodega might have been El Mason? It was on the corner of 7th and Grandview. Then there was Ben's Little Mexico. Those are the ones I can remember. I did make it to another place on W. County which was new but I don't remember the name.
I ate at Johnny's BBQ while in school. It was in walking distance of Crockett then.
Thanks for the info.

La Bodega is on 7th and Dixie. El Mason on Grandview is long gone. The owner of El Mason was the same Ben Mancha that owns Ben's Little Mexico, now on 8th St across from Albertsons. My favorite in Odessa. Haven't been to Manuel's in years. It was going way downhill back then- if it has improved I wouldn't know.
Barn Door had a bit of a down spell, but they have improved immensely the last couple years.
For Italian, I'd add Mi Piacci, on Grandview just south of University. We ate there a couple weeks ago and it was excellent. They let you BYOB wine.
I've been meaning to try the new Shrimp Boat in the MCM Elegante.

You must have left Odessa with Larry Gatlin. La bodega was born in Mitlan in the 60 and expanded to 7th and Dixie in the late 60's, great place!
The oil patch left with the oil. Its a landscaped parking lot now for Walgreens and a Texaco fillin station.

All sounds good---- but since time will be of the essence for Trojan fan road warriors, how are the hot dogs and nachos at Ratliff? :)

They are ok. Unless they go up in price they are worth it. They also sold a sausage dog last year that was good. As time draws closer I'll post ways you guys can come in off of I-20 and get to Ratliff. There are several, all are simple and no- traffic quick. I'll throw in a couple of places to eat on each route. If any one plans to spend the night you should be advised that as of now most hotels are or have been fairly full. A lot of people that have moved into Odessa with the boom are staying in them while ther houses are being built.
Would you have any feeling for how many might come. As you might expect it's all about football here and not many other distractions. Plano brought a load a few years back when they came. There were not many vacant pews left on the east side of Ratliff. Our side will be full plus. We look forward to your visit.

Ha, went to school with him ;)
I've been in and out over the years. But each time there has been a lot of years in between and I didn't stay long in each move back.

I'm not sure yet how many plan to make the trip, or if the band and drill team will go. A bunch of us are really excited about the game, and are planning to take the charter bus.

Train... when's the last time you were at "T Bar B"?? Because if it's the same location I am thinking of - it's now called Sid and Sams. (or something to that effect) We have eaten there a couple of times and it was really good only once.
The Barn Door really has turned around and we enjoy eating there again. As for BBQ - I like Rockin Q and it's right on the way to the "House Mojo Built" Friday nights! ;) I don't care for Zucchi's at all and I love Italian food, fwiw.
For local (sorta) seafood - Big Daddy's is good for all things southern seafood and fried.
Trinity Folk - I hope the charter bus makes time for you all to stop off and eat in town. But if not - Ratliff fare is pretty good and way cheaper than most places.

Call me crazy - but if you're calling a joint good, and it's been a parking lot for 5 years - well, maybe you ought to update your "best of" book.

My kids love it. They of course made Bobby Cox rich at Taco Villa years ago.

I loved it. But it is a little bit of a drive from Katy to Odessa. I used to live in McCamey, and ate their quiet a bit back in the day.
