Larry Hill doesn’t mind voicing his disdain for high school football polls.
“Polls are more of a tribute to your past than your future,” said Hill, whose Smithson Valley Rangers are ranked No. 2 in Class 5A in the 2007 issue of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. “Polls are there to make money, I guess. I don’t know what real purpose they serve. I guess if you’re in the BCS they’re OK, but (in high school) you need to win the games on your schedule.”
The 48th edition of Texas Football has the area’s three UIL football programs ranked among the elite in Texas this upcoming season. Smithson Valley is ranked behind Southlake Carroll in the Class 5A top 25.
The magazine will officially go on sale Monday, but its release sometimes gives reason for coaches to gripe — mostly because of lofty expectations it places on their teams.
Returning from that team are offensive linemen James Fry, Tommy Parsons and Shawn Wyatt, all on Texas Football’s Top 300 player list.
“We have those linemen, and (Cody) Renken has made some plays at receiver and (Trent) Rios has been our leading rusher the last two seasons,” Hill said. “While we have some people back on offense and defense, we have some key positions we’re having to start over.”
Two other 26-5A teams are among area squads in Texas Football’s state rankings, including Jim Streety’s Madison Mavericks (No. 6), O’Connor (11th); Warren (15th) and Reagan (24th).

SV may very well end up in that spot by season's end. It's just too high a slot,in my opinion, for them preseason. Coach did his job & said the right things. My guess is he's cursing this under his breath, though.

I'd bet SV will be in the hunt, but you simply have no reason to pick them 2nd. Maybe he thought he was researching ET. Who cares - apparently not Campbell.

Their are a couple reasons I can think of.....1 is the lineman their is not one under 6'4 ans the average is about 260...... they have have a running back that has been running the program from the backfield since his sophmore year....the defense can do nothing but get better.....a very mature team since i can think of only 2 juniors that will be starting and the rest will be seniors....and a QB with more athletisisum. Tho I do not know if they should be number 2 i do know that the kts did not put them a high enough and DCTF did get closer to what they should be ranked

You know as well as I do that after watching this group of seniors as they progressed through the years that this is where they should be. It is going to be a great season for this team.

Agree! I watched this group when they were freshman and they were solid then but the O-line was HUGE! SV will be able to do what they do best......control the line of scrimmage and control the clock. The defense will be better because of it and they might be better just on talent. Put it all together and I like them to at least be the favorite for Region IV.

You have to remember I'm not a SV supporter. I like HS football and I back San Antonio MacArthur. I'm impressed with what SV has done over the last 4 or 5 years and just think they will be pretty good. I'm sure there will be a big target on those kids any I'm sure they'll handle it very well.

This magazine is very hard to agree with. How is it that they cannot get their rankings even close. They have the money to publish but they don't spend waht it takes to get the information. Coaches are going to be skewed on their survey information on behalf of their kids. How could they be so far off in the case of ET?
I am not going to get on a pedestal about where they should be ranked....but 21st is totally absurd!!! They even have the audasity to leave out other teams. They have proven once again that they are a joke, unreliable, and not worth the paper to print the magazine.

Looks like to me they based their rankings on the likely outcome of the divisional playoffs. No doubt SV has a great shot at winning Region IV, D2... All they have to do is beat Katy in the semis and DCTF looks like a genius. Of course, if they had to compete in Region II they'd be one or two and done in the playoffs. Northshore is another good example. Won't be near as good as in years past, but is still probably favorite to come out of the Region III, D1 bracket, so again, DCTF will look smart. Another team that wouldn't get off the line if they were in Region II.
So I think instead of going by the talent and ability, they're just going by playoff projections so they can say they had'em.

I have to agree on 2 fronts. Very well said by Coach Hill & yes they are ranked way higher than they should be. DC is older than dirt now and I bet he has had nothing to do with the rankings for a few years. The true idiots are the staff DCTF.

i think starting with unknowns will do them a lot of good....lets say they lose 3 non district games.... then go a round deeper than the past 3 squads have does that make them better? maybe.......i just think its going to be much harder to compare before the season starts..... where as others who know they have legit returning talent....

Sorta... Some people that put out polls try to put the teams most likely to reach the regional finals at the top of their polls so they can crow about it after the season.
I think a poll should be based on a teams ability, period. Do you think CyFalls was better than Euless Trinity last year? I don't, but I would have said they are more likely to reach San Antonio than ET was. This year is no different. I say ET could beat Smithson 8 out of 10 heads up, but if I HAD to bet my house on one or the other making the state semis, I'd go with SV...

I think SV is now that team. Judson still held that spot until last year. SV was right with them but until Judson fell back last year they were still the team everyone wanted to beat. SV has now taken that spot and yes every team will mark that game as a way to make a name for themselves.
I like was SV has to offer this year and I like the situation that Madison is in. It's almost a duplication of Mac's situation last year. If they have the leaders to guide that team then they have a chance to make a run like Mac did last year. It's hard to do though. That's what makes Judson's run and SV's run the last few years so special. People take it for granted that because you team has won for so long they continue to keep winning but eventually it comes to an end.

I was very disapointed in the magazine. Their stats are all off. I don't know where they get their information and they don't either. Randy Rodgers couldn't answer my questions about their mess up in the magazine, and didn't care that it was wrong. I think as hard as a football player works for their numbers, they should at least get it right. I wouldn't spend a cent on it or anything Dave Campbell or Randy Rodgers have anything to do with.:puke :puke :puke
